A Racist, or just conditioned?
Here I go throwing myself right in the pit of fiery vulnerability. All this stuff about racism lately, who gives S#%T. Then I remembered I thought ooohchild was black. When I saw her, I told her, we all got a good laugh. I didn't think she was black because of her blog content, actually I couldn't tell you one thing she's said, I'll have to go back & check it out, every time I saw oohchild's, blog, I do a little wiggle, you know, I get my best Queen Latifah voice & do a lil' shimmy & squeal.. "OOOOH CHILD!" Now I'm gonna miss that, eh, I'll still do it. So I definitely subconsciously, categorized her. Does that make me a racist? How many of you were surprised by the difference in the persons appearance vs. your mental picture. This has got to be typical. So ..racist, or a product of our environment? 41 comments from 12 users

Stori, not racist, you have taken life experiences and formulated a description of ohhchild based on your experiences. You were not the only one who had the perception. If you want an entertaining read, try BLINK by Malcolm Gladwell. It is on the part of the brain that makes our instataneuos decisions. A lot of interesting information on how we view good and bad and white and black.

lol lori...oochild is from a song, ding dong. It's ooo not oh. I laughed when you made your comment. No, it didn't strike me as a racist comment at all, I don't think in terms of race. As I said, madkow was the only one who surprised me.

I always sing Oooooh ooooh child...things are gonna get better. when I see Oochild post.. lol I pictured everyone that I hadn't already seen a picture of on this blog differently, I always do when I go to blog Meets. No one is ever how I picture them. I will have to say that I was surprised by Oochild as well. I thought she was going to look like a, make love not war hippy... like me... lol She actually dresses and acts quite conservatively compared to you, Olivia and myself. I wasn't shocked at Eeks appearance because at one time she did have a picture of her and her husband on here...but yeah that cute little voice was a surprise. I expected Joty to be more rugged looking, but she sure dresses up nice and is very sweet looking. My biggest surprise was Madkow... so young, so thin, and yes, she was shy.... her whole family is too cute for words. My least surprise of the night was you .. your picture and your blogs are indeed who you are. I think I surprised a few people too.... I kept hearing...darn Sparks you are little, or You're a short shiiiit huh? Bigdog even picked me off the ground laughing about how little I am... there were other women in there that were my size 5"2 but I guess there is something about my size that shocks people when they meet me. Perhaps I just talk big... lol As for being racists...it's conditioning.... hopefully someday we won't even care or mention what color of skin someone has. As of today we all take it into consideration from time to time, myself included. This doesn't mean we are a racist, it's just a fact in today's society. posted by

Damn it Sparks, you got that song in my head again. I have condition my self not to look at oochild's name and just recognize her avatar because I go for day with that song. In fact oldest will say "been on the computer today mom" when he hears me singing it or playing it. posted by

LMFAO, you guys! This day is gonna be great.... Lori, you are a real pistol. I laughed so hard when you looked at me and said you had thought I was black! Boy, wouldn't my redneck relatives get a kick in the a$$ with that one... Sparks, you are the greatest. I'm so glad we showed up first & had a chance to chat before anyone else got there. Joty, you're just a doll & I can't wait for the next time we all get together. You do clean up nice! Colitas, you have to come for a visit some day. I know my screen name gets that reaction from where everĀ I post. Yes, I'm (almost) always oohchild whenever I join a board; sometimes it's ooh_child or ooh-child. Depends on what characters the board allows. I just love that song! Kinda sucks it's being used for advertising now...... reffup, I hope we can talk more next time. Just get me going on politics! I know I look conservative in appearance, but that's my job. What can you do? ;-) posted by

Oohchild I will tlak politics with you any day. My brother who I spend hours with on the phone has been in Iraq since March and has not been around to help me feed my addiction to politics. So anytime. I had a really good time last nite. So often in this world it seems despite all the new forms of communication. we are more isolated. It was nice to get out and have intelligent conversation, and meet nice people. posted by

Yes, I too thought oohchild was going to be a hippie woman! And then she said in a blog that she knew me! Then I had to spend 24 hrs pondering who she was...was she a closet liberal that hid her views because of her job? How did I miss a fellow liberal??? But then when I met her I figured out why.... And I haven't been here much the past 3 weeks and met StoriLori...and wondered WHO IS THIS? But now I know and am glad she felt comfortable enough to come. We bloggers can sometimes be intimidating! And we all survivored the Meet and Greet!

You know, I wasn't terribly surprised by anyone- I think because I didn't have any expectations. Yep, shy me- I don't ever think about faces. Bad habit of mine. Although it got me thinking about why people choose the pictures/avatars they do. Joty- when I saw you I thought: yep, lion! Oohchild, I didn't know what you'd look like, but I knew you'd be calm, collected, observant... You remind me of my sister, actually, now that I think about it. posted by

I don't think that forming a mental picture of a person whom you've never seen is racist at all. We all hear celebrity voices on the radio, for instance, and form mental pictures of the person (Tom Leykis being one). I used to listen to Tom every day as I commuted home from work.. I thought of him as having dark hair, olive skin, handsome. When I saw his picture for the first time, I was completely blown away! He was the complete opposite! Bummer... lol posted by

reffup.. I had a love/hate relationship with Tom Leykis.. lol Some days I loved listening to his ranting, other days he was too liberal for my taste so I'd find another station. (BTW, I never did see anyone flash on "Flash Friday".) He was a chauvinist in the worst way (Leykis 101) but he was so funny and 'out there' about it, you had to keep listening to see what outrageous thing he would say next. I can't say I agreed with '101' but I'm sure there are lots of males who do agree with his tactics. He had so many wives that I always thought maybe he should re-think his treatment of women, but he just kept forging ahead with his agenda.... then he disappeared from the radio station and that was that! |
