Update!! Skitty Skat got the Rat! ..... Garden Thief!!!
What is taking my Vegies? For 3 week's we've been expecting ripe produce. 2 weeks ago there was a ripe tomato & zucchini missing. I figured if it was an animal, there would be some evidence, & why would a human come in & just take 1 or 2 items. This morning I finally found a green tomato on the ground, w/ 2 distinctive teeth marks in it. This is really making me mad, & obviously will continue!! I live in town & was so excited about finally getting fresh veggies! Now What?53 comments from 16 users

Yaso, I am so p**^^ !!! I was going to cut 4 zucchini's, 2 days ago, but they were just to little, I just went to get them, ONE !!! Our yard is long, front yard is facing the st. the back is facing the alley. The vegetables are on the side, next to the fence, which backs another yard. So their in the middle, not secluded @ all. Plus I have Skitty Kitty, who is our Hunter! Gophers, birds, mice! Then we have Zeus, our 'Rot n Chow'. posted by

I know the hospital uses a man in town who sets traps to catch the little stinkers....racoons and skunks. His name is Lefty and lives in Frasier park.....I think he is kind of expensive though. He just caught a mama skunk and several babies underneath one of our buildings a couple of weeks ago. posted by

Gube, I don't have any artichokes, but I have some eggplant on the way, that is if they ever come to maturity! posted by

OOhhh, last time we did that, it was horrible, the guy killed the poor stinker, it wasn't Lefty, I believe he was from the City, he had a City truck. I've been lenient on Pets Outside rule, maybe if their out all night that will help. posted by

Lori- it may be raccoons. Last winter there were 2 in a tree across the street from you. It was surprising because there are outside dogs in that yard and the one next to it. posted by

Gube--maybe it was an illegal alien who use to be a field worker that just couldn't resist! Try putting that green flimsy garden netting and drape it over your plants.

I had beautiful artichokes once and gophers would come up from the bottom and eat the roots, and the plant was flat on the ground, then the next day the plant was completely gone down the hole. We now have to chicken wire and cover the root ball when we plant trees or in the garden we lay out chicken wire before we plant. My husband even breaks glass bottles in the bottom of the trees to keep those pesky gophers out of the garden. He reminded me of Bill Murry in Caddy Shack LOL
