Tehachapi Fire Study- What do you Think?
The Tehachapi Fire Study has completed the first phase and the City Council has agreed with it as far as negotiating with Kern County Fire Department. Mr. Coleman did a good job of understanding all of the intricacies of the two departments. He didn't include public forums as I understood the first phase was supposed to contain. So, I am asking what do you think the negotiations should ask for on both parts?

I also feel this study was done right and by a professional. I hope our City leaders would talk to local fire professionals to come up with what is needed. Who else knows better then them? It is time to stop the debate over spilled milk and to start working on whats best for our City and it's residents. The minimum I would like to see is a 4 person engine company at Station 12. The best would be 5 persons with a 2nd engine that would remain in the City at all times. If the City feels that money is no problem as it has stated many times before, then how about a ladder truck and 3 more Firefighters at Station 12. The point is there are many different ideas of what we could do. I hope Grimes and Vernon ask for good advice from people that know what will work best for us.

Part 1 of the study was broken up into two parts. The public forums were supposed to be in part 2 of the 1st part of the study. We never got that far. The public will still be able to express what they feel would be best for the city. I agree with Shane that a 4 man crew should be the minimum and that 5 w/ another engine would be best. I just hope like I said before that they don't go in demanding too much and then get discouraged when they see the bill, and think it would be better for them to do it themselves. Let's face facts. It will cost more if we are going to get more. How much more is yet to be seen, BUT we will be getting MORE. If we stay with the city we WON'T be getting more of anything. No matter how you look at it it will always be cheaper to do it with the county. Also for clarification. If you read the FACTS (summary of the study that the newspaper so kindly provided for us) you will notice that a 2 person city FF/EMS crew was ONLY recommended if the county refused a forth person at station 12. A full time fire inspector for the city was also suggested. These were suggested to utilize the SAFER grant we already have. If the county adds another man to station 12 it was suggested to be used for that. If not these were two options given. I guess they figure if we have it we should use it and not give it back, which is fine, but I'd rather see it used for something other than services that are already being provided. I'm sure it will work out! :) Until then I've decided to just wait and see what happens. posted by

Thanks Shane for keeping people of Golden Hills. Home Insurance High. (approx $1000.00 per year for a fire station more the 5 miles away for not moving or building a station in GH,) and keeping the People of Tehachapi at ISO rating of 5 The city has the money, equipment and manpower in 4 months for a 4 man department. and go to a ISO rating from 5 to 4 or 3 saving approx 30% less on our homeowners. policy. I do not know where you got training that a 2 man fire station is just as good as 4 man station. For me I do not want to share Station 12 with the rest of the county. Maybe you do. but I guest you are not paying the bill for Fire Insurance. Bottom line I want to save my money. not the city. our Taxes will not go down and the county want all of us to pay $100.00 fire fund per year. I do not think you are worth the money. Per the Bakersfield California you make more $150,000. per year.

Coleman made it clear that Station 12 is going to stay put no matter what the city does - or doesn't do. It's a key location to the county's coverage of UNINCORPORATED areas - like GOLDEN HILLS. The county will continue to create more UNINCORPORATED areas and spread their services as thin as they can. Do you really think Maben cares about insurance costs to the citizens of Tehachapi? Perhaps he'll retire and start selling insurance? What exactly are you going to do when you house is in full flame and those 2 men can't even go inside until another 2 arrive on the scene? Let's hope you're not inside looking for your insurance policy... posted by

Just for your information, even if there was a fire station in Golden Hills the ISO rating would still be a 5 as it is now. You have two fire stations in the City of Tehachapi and it is still a 5. Golden Hills needs a Fire station and I would be the 1st one to say that. Carl this is the same stuff you were talking about at the meeting, Don't you think Mr. Coleman knows more about the ISO rating then you do? Just to let everyone know that property has been acquired for a Fire station at redapple and westwood. Call Mayben and have him give up the 2 Million to build it. We are not talking about Golden Hills we are talking about the City of Tehachapi. Why should the City tay payers pay more for service, so Golden Hills can have a fire station? That is what you are saying what needs to be done right? Pay more in the City for a City Fire Department then move the County out to Golden Hills. Is this what you want for the tax payers of the City? posted by

Wow 'senior' I am flattered that you think I have that much power. The City did a study. The study showed what was best for the City. I didn't do the study, so I am not sure how I am hurting the residents of Golden Hills. The fact is Golden Hills needs a Firestation, moving Station 12 would not have improved fire protection. If Station 12 was moved what would happen to the people living in the county east of town? Their fire protection would have gone down. After this City fire thing is complete I will put my "powers" towards a Firestation in Golden Hills. LOL

LOL! I thought I had a spelling problem! I don't have any more "power" then any other motivated citizen has! You can get things done in City Hall, just don't give up. Please don't delete him he has the same right as anyone else to voice his ideas. As long as he doesn't make any attacks lets keep him. posted by

SeniorCitizen boy do you have your facts screwed up. You say that the city in 4 months would be able to have a 4 man station. They have 3 employees- where are the other 9 going to come from? I guess the first three they hire would be promoted to Engineer because they have a drivers license and know how to drive. And then you think that they would be able to get an ISO of a 4 or 3. That's a pipe dream. F/F Shane making 150,000- don't let his ex know that or his tax man. sushisoo- did some one with an anon. name make a comment about your post and then disappear? As far as plans for more stations, yes the chief of the Kern County Fire Department has a prioritized list of stations for the county. Call down to their headquarters at 391-7000 and ask for Deputy Chief Cody (he is the Chief for this part of the county). I would think he could give you the info that you don't think exists or at least point you in the right direction. posted by

Oh is that what he was saying? I didn't know he was talking about my pay. LOL Well take that $150,000 divide it by 2 and that's what I made last year. I also worked a lot of overtime it get that. Before anyone goes crazy about my overtime let me tell you 95% of it came from working on State and Fed fires, that the County got reimbursed 115% for. It's all public record, just ask the Bakersfield Californian.
