Reports Missing from the Tehachapi News
Is it just me or do I see a lack of serious reporting in our very own Tehachapi News? I feel let down that our own Newspaper cannot report on the stories in our town that affect our lives. Dear Editor please respond:
Dear Editor can you explain why I get more accurate accounting's of what happens in our City Council meetings from the Desert News than I do from our own city's newspaper? I attend the meetings and what is reported in the Tehachapi News is not the meeting I attended. Please clarify this for me Dear Editor. Why was nothing reported in our paper about the Grand Jury Investigation of the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District in the paper of March 3rd? The report came out February 28th. The Bakersfield Californian did a complete piece, the Desert News did a piece, albeit under the headline of Grand Jury Inquiry no doubt because Bill Deaver was a volunteer for the TVHD. The Tehachapi News finally published the initial Grand Jury report on March 10th with not nearly the fanfare of the Women's History Month and the ever-so insightful questions posed to Mayor Hand and May Pro-tem Vernon. Dear Editor did you think the citizens of Tehachapi did not have a right to know that the TVHD had been over-billing Medicare to the tune of $500,000 and because they have to pay this money back this will perhaps cause another delay in starting the hospital construction? And, the more delays the costlier the project? Did you ask for comments? Or, did you not report on this Grand Jury Investigation because in your heart of hearts you know this will give more credence to those of us who really wanted that Investigative Audit of City Hall. You seem to have turned against us. What about us Dear Editor? We outnumber the Hand group by considerable margins, yet these are the only people you listen to. What about our rights to know Dear Editor? After all we are voters too! What about the last council meeting Dear Editor? You printed absolutely nothing about that. Don't you think perhaps the public might like to know the outcome of a vote on Section 8 housing? This was a pretty hot an heavy meeting, and yet you wrote nothing about this? Why not Dear Editor? You wrote plenty about Women's History month, a full page spread in fact, with your ever-so insightful questions of Mayor Hand and Mayor Pro-tempore Vernon. Now which story do you think is more likely to impact our lives, Section 8 housing or the Mayor's wisdom on Women's History month? 23 comments from 9 users

I have to agree with the oneandonly in that in the past the editor has always responded to concerns very quickly, and it is the sudden lack of response that is so unusual and frustrating. On another note, does anyone have an e-mail address for Ed Gordon? I see that he is a reporter for the news but under the contacts I don't see any info to contact him. posted by

I'm sure they'll miss all three of you terribly. AT least you'll still have each other to talk to. posted by

Apparently there's only one way to send them the message. I will NOT renew my subscription and will yank my advertising and transfer both to The Mountain Signal. The more of us that do that, the stronger will be the message. They must think they are above it all...well, they're NOT! posted by

The Mountain Signal is making an effort to be relevant. They are printing 3 pages or so of the High School paper which is interesting. They are putting out a lot of newsprint with little advertising though, and its hard to see how they can keep it up. The Snooze has gotten just plug-ugly awful though. They don't even bother to print letters to the editor anymore, they combine Mill Street and Sports as often as not, and the main section has lost 4 pages. You'd think with the money from that full-color Home Depot insert they'd be able to do a better job. Basically they put out a community calender wrapped around Real Estate ads. Oh - and this blog, which must be read by 10's of people. posted by

My old lady says that the Loop is a better news paper then TN. I read it at a restaurant the other day and I have to say it had some interesting articles in it. posted by

The Snooze actually got a little involved in the community for a while a few years ago, when Al Crissalli Jr. ran it. Since he left, it has reverted almost totally to its real function as a seller of real estate and has made itself progressively smaller and more and more irrelevant ever since. To not even cover a Section 8 Housing controversy, though? That surprises me. Whatta rag. posted by

Please don't give up. I assure you that the new GM is more than equal to this task and he won't be put off by a bunch of bloggers. Your light is very much appreciated OGM. Thank you for your comments. It does appear that we agree that we want the news reported as the news and not as editorials. And, most of the responses out here concur that we want answers as to why we have had a lack of news and why facts have been omitted or distorted. However, this blog is attacking no one personally it is only highlighting the job performed by a public persona and therefore I would have objected heartily to Vicki Thrasher had she removed this blog. Seems to me that all posts are pretty much in agreement with the blog. I'll be happy to oblige and wait until the TN comes out on Monday, but I think again we all agree that Carin always responded to our questions rapidly and this time lapse has not helped the situation. Over 300 people have viewed this blog and that raises the importance level considerably. This is not a subject that is going to die on the vine. We need and want answers as to why we have been deliberately misinformed either by intent or omission. posted by

Let's all calm down a bit here. omg, no one here has said one word about the new GM. In fact, if you read the blog carefully, you can see that every comment was directed to the Editor. The reason that is so is that historically the Editor, Carin Enovijas, was the one to attend the council meetings and report on them. Of late Ed Gordon, who runs the train shop downtown, has been reporting on the council meetings. What he writes is run through the editor and either Mr. Gordon has made grievous errors of omission, or the Editor has edited his articles with a heavy hand. I do not see any "attack" involved here. Perhaps because you work at the paper you are oversensitive to the issue. As a reader, I pay to know what is happening in MY community in total without any personal bias from the editor. These are serious questions that need to be addressed by the GM or the Editor and flimsy excuses won't be acceptable. If the new GM has the experience that you tout then these questions should NOT be putting any undo pressure on him. calvin - please let up and lay off a bit. This was never meant to be an attack blog.

So, ogm. You reveal yourself to be a member of the staff of the newspaper since you know, on a Sunday, in advance of the printing, what will be published in the next edition. Isn't that considered "biased"? Since you seem to know everything about the Tehachapi News, why don't you enlighten us poor, dumb, subscribers/advertisers? For instance, you state that the new GM has only been on the job for 2 weeks and should be given more time to get up to speed on our community needs and problems. So, therefor, in your omnipotence, how much more time should he be given? 5 weeks? 15 weeks? 53 weeks. Of course, we will harken to your words of wisdom!

So, ogm. You know all this information in advance...on a Sunday, before the paper has even been printed. That only serves to reveal your affiliation with the newspaper. Isn't that considered a "bias"? Also, since you state the new GM has only been on the job for 2 weeks and we should give him more time to get familiar with the community and it's problems...how much more time would you suggest? 5 weeks? 10 weeks? 52 weeks? You seem to have all the answers, so why don't you enlighten us? We are just dumb citizen subscribers and advertisers...paying your salaries!
By the way may I suggest you read this week's newspaper. Just maybe you WILL find a response. One the entire community can read! Not just a handful! posted by

Response to ogm: You write well, now you have to learn how to READ well. Nobody is "attacking" anybody here. You will note the word "reasonable" in requesting a reply from the TN. Any job has its ups and downs and this is one of the "downs" and is therefor a part of his job. SILENCE is not a responsible or reasoned choice! You suggest a one-on-one meeting with the GM. That's nice..but what about the other 14,000 readers? The only way he can "meet" with them is through the newspaper. It's called writing an EDITORIAL. Most worthy newspapers offer that. It states the paper's position on issues of interest or concern to its readers. Unfortunately, this newspaper appears to avoid any possible controversy, thereby CREATING ONE of its own making. We citizens will not allow silence to be an option. The same is true of our City Council and other City officials. Those in positions of responsibility to the public they serve must be held accountable and that's all that's being asked of here. We think this is only "reasonable".

I'll throw my two cents into mix. Why hasn't TN responded to this post? All the comments and questions are reasonable. I look forward to the TN to report on important council meetings and such. I don't think it is too much to ask of a community newspaper. I'll be waiting along side many others to see a response on this issue. A simple explanation would be Nice. posted by

I am really surprised about the lack of response from the editor about this blog. Hasn't there always been a quick response from TN in the past? I want to know the answers as well. I am especially interested in the entirety on the grand jury report. posted by

This blog is GREAT! Almost as good as asking questions of my desk lamp. News - why do you even host this site? Maybe if you would respond to real questions, it would amount to more than gube's latest immigration musings. |
