This is a holiday???
So, I've got a few people coming over for Thanksgiving. Since I'm a working kitty, I won't be doing any cooking or cleaning during the day leading up to the big event, which means the nights are starting to look a little crowded this week.
My father in law is joining us, and since he won't drive when it's dark (and he won't let us pick him up and take him home) the meal needs to be ready by 2:30 p.m. or so, so he can be back on the road by no later than 4 p.m. After buying all of the ingredients for the meal, and figuring out how much prep time I'm going to need for each dish, plus time to do the little things, like shower and brush out my hair, it looks like I'll need to be up by 6 a.m. or so, get in the kitchen by 8 a.m., serve at 2:30 p.m., and pack the "to-go" items for FIL at around 4:00 p.m. This is a holiday?? Don't get me wrong (because someone always seems to "get" someone wrong), I'm happy to have the day off and everything, but until they replace football with the George Clooney/Johnny Depp film marathon it's still going to seem like us gals got the short of the stick on this one. 5 comments from 5 users

I'd be glued to the TV all day if there was a Johnny Depp marathon... so I guess it's good that they don't have one ;)I have yet to cook a Thanksgiving dinner, which is a good thing for anyone who would have to eat it. I always offer to help, but it's always politely declined. posted by

This is the first year I get to prepare Thanksgiving Dinner since before I was married, so I'm looking forward to it. I get to be home & in my own kitchen (we always go to my hubby's family's gathering in Santa Maria) & watching FOOTBALL! YAY! Sorry to hear you're not looking forward to it, weebles. Can anyone help you out? Can you cut down on prep time by buying some foods already prepared? I'm getting my cousin to bring the desserts, so I'm not going to be bogged down in baking. And I don't care if my stuffing recipe calls for me to bake the cornbread, I'm still buying it from the bakery. I hope you can work it out, weebles. I'm thankful I get to be home this year, and my boss has given me Friday off. Hubby has to work; he's to be "Head Honcho" out there for the day. Everyone else took the day off before he got around to it. Hehe! posted by

Weebles, I hear you. Even though thanksgiving dinner is my favorite dinner to cook it does take a lot of prep time and for the last few years I have been short of time. I do a lot of short cuts when making the 'traditional dinner'. For instance, I'll cook the celery and onions a day or two in advance and get the hubby to cut those up for me. I'll dice the pecans and walnuts a week or so earlier. I cook the cranberry relish at this time as well. If I'm really short of time, Honeybaked here I come. Sam's club has some pecan and pumpkin tarts that I'm going to buy this year instead of pies, and they have some rum and raisin glazed carrots that are yummy and heat up quickly. If you want mashed potatoes you can cook the potatoes ahead of time and store them in the fridge in the water. Sounds like a lot, but I write out my menu and plan what I need to do then see where I can take shortcuts. I can unsually get the hubby to do a lot of the prep work for me. But regardless, this is a hectic time of year for the working women out there. I hope that day brings more joy than stress for you. Paper plates work wonder for the clean-up and lots of foil when cooking. ;-))) posted by

I haven't done anything yet. I did put the turkey in the fridge to thaw. We well be having hmmm....11, maybe 12 people here. I'm waiting till tomorrow and then go crazy, trying to figure out what I need to still go get at the grocery store. I have Wednesday and Thursday off, (unless someone calls in sick) so Wednesday I'll make some pies and do what I can in a mad craze to make things easier on Thanksgiving. It's also my daughter's 19 birthday.....so, do I bake a cake? So much for her fave meal. Well maybe not. She's my little peta daughter, so I may make something pastaish for her.

Oh, you should just ignore me. I was just throwing a small pity party prior to the big event. I've got all of my ingredients bought and will probably start tomorrow night, just to get a jump on things.However, I wasn't kidding about the movie marathon :o)
