weebles - > Mindless musings -> Bamboo panties
Bamboo panties
In my slow quest to be a better, more thoughtful consumer of products I recently came across something that made me think the green evolution had gone around the bend.

I found a web site that offered, among other things, panties made out of bamboo fiber. Now, when I think of bamboo I think of furniture, curtain-like thingys that separate rooms and the fact that if you plant it in your yard it will never go away. But I don't think clothing, let alone panties.

But there they were, promising to be soft, sleek and better for the environment than even organic cotton. I had to have them. So, I sent in my order, as well as an order for a couple of T-shirts for my DH and a shirt for me.

And it was all true. Bamboo clothing is as soft as your most favorite broken-in T-shirt. It looks great, feels great and is great for the environment. And, as an added bonus, you get to say things like "bamboo panties".

Most bamboo products, however, are shipped here from China.  So, not only are we supporting the Peoples Republic of China's dictatorship through buying bamboo products, but we are also supporting the shipping of the product thousands of miles over the sea, creating huge amounts of pollution from the transportation of it.  I only say this because I started to feel a little guilty after installing bamboo flooring in my house and all the boxes said made in china.  As far as clothing goes, I think organic cotton is a much better choice, and it's getting much more comfortable and is grown in California.

Cotton isn't necessarily bad, bamboo has just proven to be better. Bamboo requires far less water, takes much less room to grow as a crop than does cotton, so you can produce more fiber on less land, is much more pest-resistant (which means less pesticide spraying) and grows at a phenomenal rate. I still like cotton, especially organically-grown cotton, but I have to tell you, bamboo is softer. It's like getting a T-shirt that someone else already broke in for you.

I think it's because bamboo grows so fast, apparently faster than cotton, so it's a better choice for renewable-source clothing.  I think.  Plus, I agree with Weebles, it is pretty fun to say "bamboo panties"!

When did cotton become a poor choice for the environment?  Not that I have a problem with anyone wearing bamboo .... Glad to hear it is comfy.

Well that's not so bad then.  A little under ten bucks per...  I suppose that's fair.  But they had better look damn sexy ;)

Oops, I forgot Joty (though not on purpose).

Hemp has come a long way, where they are combining it with organic cotton so it isn't as scratchy as some might remember it. Bamboo is much softer, though.

As far as the wind chimes, only if the friction of my big butt cheeks rubbing together creates enough wind :o)

Well, they can make clothing from recycled plastic bottles, so I guess bamboo isn't too far a stretch. Hmmm, do they stretch? lol. I remember hemp clothing too.

Do you make noise when you walk like a bamboo wind chime?   :O
