Decorating for the holidays
This year my DH and I have hit an all-time low for holiday decorating, mostly because we were busy buying new furniture for the living room, getting rid of old furniture and moving everything around. Anyway, we have almost nothing in the house to indicate that the holidays are just around the corner.
Oh, and we have the most organized gang of decoration-destroyers ever found on four feet. Having said that, anyone have ideas for quick and easy decorations that will make the home look a little more festive? We don't do a tree, since one cat lives to remove all of the decorations and one of the others chews through the strings of lights and bites the light bulbs until they burst. We are convinced that he will burn down our house if we keep giving him the opportunity. So, barring a tree idea, I'm open to anything else. 8 comments from 8 users

Do you have a mantle? If so, how about some garland and lights on the mantle?

Christmas cards set up all in one place, Lights and garland (firmly attached to something, do deter the four-legged fiends), some pine or cinnamon scented candles/plug ins, and carols playing on the radio/cd/mp3.posted by

I haven't decorated for the last 5 years because I don't have kids at home and Christmas has become so comercialized, I rarely get in the spirit anymore. But, a real Christmas tree (not a cut one) and a frosty the snow man sitting around somewhere would be fun. If you are religious, I have always thought mangers to be beautiful. Don't forget a few lights..the colored ones. The white ones suck.

Since you can't have a tree why not a wreath on the front door. Lights and garland also are an easy way to get that holiday look without alot of effort. Even something as simple as popping by the doller store and grabbing a few christmas knick knacks to put around the house can make a big difference and also it won't be a big loss if the kitties do find a way to get to them and destroy them. Buy some ribbon and put some holiday bows around the house (around lamp bases or candlesticks, around doorknobs stair railings, over doorways or on the top of picture frames) If you have a chandelier that's an easy item to decorate that they shouldn't be able to get to.

I got home from work yesterday, told bigdog to go pull out the Christmas tree, (we choose artificial). He brought it in, watching me curiously for a bit and then asked, what's gotten into you? I have to admit that I haven't really wanted anything much to do with Christmas this year. But something came over me at work and I decided, it's time to decorate the house. I put the tree up. On Sunday, I'm hoping we will (6 kids and me and bigdog) be able to all get together have snacks, watch Frosty, and Rudolf and hang ornaments. I believe...10 days before Christmas, the spirit has finally kicked in. Whew!!!

My spirit still hasn't kicked in. I did get Christmas cards mailed. I have a red xmas bucket with mint truffle kisses, three wrapped presents sitting next to our 2 inch tree (lol, my husband found one of those miniture trees that obviously goes to a christmas village so I set it on top of the TV). Hey, it's a tree! Got the few Christmas cards we've received taped up. We found our box of lights today, but my husband doesn't want to put them up...so, there ya have it. Oh, and I bought one of those holiday themed oval kleenex boxes.
