Turns out that my dog's a wino...

Who'da guessed?

I know some dogs have an affinity for beer. Mine's no different. Just smelling the open bottleneck is like a little bit of heaven for him.

But the other night I was sitting watching politics with a glass of white wine (which is one of the best ways to watch politics), and there he was, sniffing like there was no tomorrow. So, I dipped my finger into the wine and put it by his nose, thinking the alcohol smell would back him up. But noooooooooooo, he started licking my finger as though it was covered in barbeque sauce!

Now I can't keep the little derelict away from my glass.

Spirits are never a good idea.  I know that Jesus turned the water in to wine, so I do have some wine now and then.  I thought I heard it was good for your blood, and sometimes I can't afford my nerve pills.  I think if it's good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me.

BTW Weebles -

"Recently, veterinarians have recognized this new poisoning in dogs: severe acute kidney failure following ingestion of grapes or raisins.

What causes it?

The specific poisons involved in this toxicosis have eluded identification. Fungal, pesticide and heavy-metal causes have been ruled out at this time.

Investigation continues. It appears from recent unpublished data that the toxic component is within the flesh of the grape/raisin, not the seed." [emphasis mine]

Weebles, to be on the safe side, just assume wine as a grape product is just as poisonous. Don't just take my word for it, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control.

I don't care about humans too stupid to realize they are poisoning themselves, it's their choice. Besides the difference in body chemistry, animals don't know the difference. My dog loves kitty roca.

Sure, there's a comic factor there, but if that's how people have to get a laugh they shouldn't be allowed to be pet owners.

Humans who knowingly give alcohol to pets is equivalent to giving it to a child. Both abuse and endangerment.

A friend of mine had a horse that had been taught to sit like a dog....then she taught him to hold a Coors bottle with his lips and he would sit there and it looked like he was drinking it.

When I was a kid we had a Cocker Spaniel that loved beer so much, she once ate a beer can.  All we found were the top and bottom and a few aluminum shavings.  Amazingly enough she didn't even cut herself.  It was the miracle dog.

Wine in itself is not more toxic than other alcohol substances. The poisonous part of grapes for dogs is their seeds. That being said, it is not good for them to consume in any sort of quantity (just like for people). That's why my glass now has to sit further from the TV than I did back when I was ten and they were sure your retinas would fry from staring at the box :o)

My dog could double for an AA sponsor, since you won't be able to keep alcohol within five feet of him.

All joking aside...alchohol is toxic to dogs. Wine must be more so because grapes are so very very toxic to canines.
