Wells School Meeting Update!

Whoops!!! I gave you the wrong date! The meeting for public input on "Surplus Real Property" belonging to the TUSD, including Wells and the old Jacobson Jr. High, is THIS Thursday, March 29, in the teachers lounge of the OLD Jacobson Jr. High, at 7 p.m. Besides the issue of Wells School, we need to have something done with the old Jacobson. We also, coincidentially, need our downtown elementary school back, so our downtown children don't have to be bussed out to Cummings Valley. Do you suppose they could use the old Jacobson for a new "Wells"? Come to the meeting and share your views.

Here's a link, or you find the agenda item on the School Board page, in the right-hand menu under "Agendas". Click on March 29,2007.

Wells School Meeting

There will be a Public Hearing to discuss the future of Wells School this Thursday, April 5, at 7 p.m. at the OLD Jacobson Jr. High School. It will be in what was once the teachers' lounge. You go in the main entrance with the double doors, turn right and go all the way down on the right. (Does this give new meaning to the term, "hidden agenda"?)

Apparently, Wells can no longer be used as a school, and the school district doesn't have the money to fix it. I am sharing this not as a City Councilmember, but as a private citizen. My business is so close to it that I can't enter into the discussions from the City's side, but I know they are interested in buying it and putting it to use by the community as well as for a possible new City Hall. This has been talked about freely for years.

If you would like to see YOUR PROPERTY -- because that's what the schools are -- actually used, and not just sitting there abandoned, please come to this meeting and give your input. What would YOU like to see at the Wells School site?

Hope to see you all there,

Fire Study Results

I have the new draft of the fire study. You are welcome to come read it on Sat. or Monday in Mountain Music. It should be available Monday at City Hall, as well.

I have just had time to read the intro. They give several recommendations and options, depending on the agreement with the County. Here's an excerpt:

"The City should proceed with negotiations to establish a full fire services contract with KCFD, assuming that the County will develop a cost-effective agreement that includes fully committing to a positive working relationship. This agreement should also include the option to increase KCFD Fire Station 12, from a daily 24-hour on-duty fire-company staffing of three firefighters to four firefighters."

They discuss options under which the City would keep some City unit, but they don't believe a City reserve unit is viable in the long run.

We'll discuss it on Monday.

Library Location

We do need a new permanent library. If the County is able to build one, where should it be located?

Do you like any of these locations?

1. The County-owned land next to the High School on Valley Blvd.

2. Valley Blvd. west of Tucker, towards Golden Hills

3. On or near the old Wells School site, by Central Park

4. Capitol Hills

5. Leave it in the present location

Any other ideas?

BeeKay Theater

I would like to ask everyone what you would like to see done with the BeeKay Theater building. It would cost $100,000 or so to tear it down. The bid to build a building within the shell was close to a million dollars. It would probably cost a million to put up a new building if we tore the walls down. It would cost maybe $300,000 to make it into an atrium park of some kind.

What are your opinions and ideas? We have some grant money, and could afford to spend the money to do any of these options. Is it the best use of money?

I would particularly like to hear from TCT members.

Thank you,

Deborah Hand
