Get your puppy while they last!

Here are Lorelei's puppies (born May 18th), ready to be seen and we are taking reservations now! There are eight mulit-colored pups, 5 males, three females. Four black, three light yellow/tan (one is white!) and one brown one. They are four weeks old today (Father's Day) and wil be ready for their new homes around July 13th. At that time they will have had two sets of puppy vaccines, they were already wormed and are eating solid food (puppy gruel). They are also being paper-trained. Mom will most likely be done weaning by the end of June and she will be back at Canine Canyon Ranch for adoption.

The puppies are at a BVS foster home and are ready to be seen now by appointment. Two are already spoken for via Petfinder.com, both black. The puppies are available for a donation to the rescue and there is a special adoption contract which requires all puppies to be fixed at 5-6 months of age. We don't need any more strays like Lorelei having more litters!!

Call Leslie at Canine Canyon Ranch at 661-823-0111 or email to caninecanyonranch@wildblue.net for more photos of individual puppies.

Canine Canyon Ranch thanks Cummings Valley Elementary School

On Friday, June 6th I attended the closing flag ceremony at Cummings Valley Elementary School. No, I don't have children, all of my kids have four legs! I stood teary eyed as I listened to the sound of seven hundred children singing the National Anthem, then reciting the pledge of Allegiance, followed by the Preamble to our Consititution (I don't even know that!).

Then, as all of the kids stood quietly and listened, their Principal announced the results of their coin collecting drive. He proudly read out the numbers, thousands of pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, and even some bills went into the pot. Cheers erupted when he read the total out loud: Over two thousand dollars!! Wow, was I impressed.

Then he introduced those of us present-The Tehachapi Humane Society, DobieSOS and Canine Canyon Ranch and informed us that each of the animal rescue organizations would receive a check for $700! Wow, was I speechless and totally surprised. By the time it sunk in that $700 would buy a lot of dog food, vet care, etc. just at my rescue, the kids were dismissed and already filing back to class.

I was able to catch up with one class of fifth graders about to march off to their very last elementary school assembly and I showed them some pictures that I brought-of my livingroom filled with dogs of all colors, sleeping on the floor, the couch, under the table, wherever they could find space that day. Amid their comments of "cool", "wow" and "that's awesome", I told them that their hard work would help me to save a lot of big mutts this summer. When I told them that I use about 40-50 pounds of dog food every day, their eyes widened. Some of the kids then told me that this coin collecting for the animals project had made them more aware of their own pets, got them to walk their dogs, spend more time with them, get them a new collar.

Education is a wonderful thing and I thank the school for opening the minds and hearts of their students, and for allowing me to participate in my own small way and to benefit greatly from their generosity. Hug your dog for me!

Two purebred black labs at the dog ranch!

This is normally a haven for big mutts. But these two have been waiting for a spot at camp for almost two months. Meet Morcie and Brandy, purebred black labradors, who arrived this past weekend.

Morcie (male) is 5 and Brandy (female) is 4. They had a loving home in Bakersfield, but their previous owners were worried that they couldn't spend enough time with them, so here they are, along with their very impressively long pedigrees. They could care less, but just in case, I wanted to let you know that their names are official...and very loooonnnggggg.

They are both fixed with all shots and quite social with the gang here at the ranch. They are housebroken and just, well, typical labradors. They are past the puppy stage at 4 and 5 BUT they still want to play. They like to ride in the car, pull their leashes (and you), but just have that irrestible labness about them.

They could be adopted together or separately (I don't think they'd notice, honestly) and they are quite ready to get a new family and leave the ranch. Give us a call at 661-823-0111 or email to caninecanyonranch@wildblue.net. They can also be seen on our website at www.caninecanyonranch.org or on Petfinder.com.

There are also twelve other wonderful foster dogs awaiting new homes at the ranch. Spread the word! Sadly, there are more waiting.

Mama Dog and her puppies at Canine Canyon Ranch

Its been a while since I've blogged. Its been VERY busy here at the dog ranch-lots of strays and one just made me a Grandma! Unfortunately I haven't had room for all of them and some had to take a trip down south where they have a chance to get adopted...check the TN next week for a letter on that subjct...

Here is Miss Lorelei and her multicolored litter. She was a stray running around Alpine Forest early this Spring and found refuge for a few weeks with Darius up on Matterhorn. He called me and we got her here just in time-she delivered ten puppies on Sunday, May 18th.

We've lost two so far and Miss Lorelei and her eight surviving pups are now comfy and warm in the inside barn kennel, right next to Mr. Gray kitten who is just over his quarantine period but is so small at 5 pounds that I can't take the chance he'll escape the outside fence, so he's stuck next to the puppy nursery. Lorelei and her puppies will al be ready for new homes around July 4th...an Independence Day for everyone? Spread the word-PLEASE?

Lorelei is about 45 pounds and is a hound mix. She's beautiful, sweet, quiet (except for the occasional bay), VERY housebroken (must be hard to hold the post puppy squirts, but she does!!) and a wonderful mom. She is a beautiful black and tan mix and has a glossy black coat. The puppies are three white/yellow lab looking, four black and white and one brown mutt. We'll see how they look in a few weeks. I usually don't have any small dogs here, much less puppies, so this was a wonderful experience for me..and for the sisxteen other dogs in the main house who keep wondering where Mom goes for such long periods of time.

The pups are very happily sucking milk and laying on the heating pad I stole from hubby (if you see Mike limping around at BSE Rents, you'll know why!!) and the twelve fosters are getting fat laying around in the sun, so if you know anyone looking for a companion, or a skinny little gray kitten, please have them call me at 661-823-0111.

Check out my website at www.caninecanyonranch.org too-Sparks did a fantastic job and she'll be over soon fro some puppy love!

How many dogs can you pet at STOP's May 10th Adoption Day?

Well, this week is going to break at least one record for me: I've never had more than 15 dogs on my property at once! By Tuesday of this coming week, I will have sixteen dogs here-twelve of them are foster dogs that need new homes!

Its raining dogs out there, shelter rescues, puppies, pregnant dog moms going into labor while trying to cross busy streets, owner-surrenders, evictions, forclosures...it really never ends, even in our little mountain town. That is why STOP began and why we ARE going to get a shelter built here. Every day we have to say no because we don't have space, money or sometimes even just a safe place for a stray dog to spend one night.

STOP is having its next Adoption Day on Saturday May 10th, 12-3 pm at Canine Creek Dog Wash and Boutique. If you have evr thought about adding another furry friend to your pack, and just in time for the summer fun that kids and their companion animals have, then come on down next Saturday. I know that I have neverhad such a wonderful group of great dogs to choose from. They won't all be there, of course (calm down Susie, really!!) but there should be a wonderful selection of dogs there, from tiny to large and they all deserve to go home with you!

Check out the slideshow of dogs coming from Canine Canyon Ranch next Saturday. You can see some of their photos and bios at www.caninecanyonranch.org or check out Petfinder.com. The STOP dogs are all listed under my shelter as well.

There were thirteen dogs on the site this morning and more being added after this weekend when I return from a little R&R. Expected arrivals include a male 12 week old yellow lab puppy, a 9 month old female black fuzzball puppy, an older red Queensland, a small male red Queensland mix and a male 1 year old chocolate lab. Most are already fixed with shots. See you then or before if you want the best selection.

Laska found her family!!!

Remember that scared little girl Blue Heeler from the back yard in Golden Hills? She came here about three weeks ago, spent some time in solitary and then I moved her into my outdoor yard with the pack-and miracle of miracles-she became a real dog! The power of the pack is a truly wonderful thing to behold.

Just this past week I put her on Petfinder, figuring that she'd be here for months. This past week, she started coming into the house and wanting attention and today.....a family who saw her on Petfindercom, contacted me by email and only saw photos, drove all the way down from Visalia and took her home. She wasn't happy being in a kennel for the trip but this fanily was so gentle, so understanding, so loving...they will give her the time she needs to come out of her shell and become the dog she was meant to be!

Thank you Chris in Golden Hills for saving her life! For naming her "God's grace". Thank you Joe for helping me to catch her and bring her here. Thank you everyone who wrote in support of my efforts...I will certainly sleep well tonight!

Good night little Laska, good night. You passed through my life and taught me a renewed lesson in patience. Best of luck in your journey in becoming the beloved pet partner in a wonderful family's life. Be happy.

Here are the stars available at Sat 4/5 Adoption Day at Canine Creek!!

Canine Canyon Ranch is participating in Canine Creek's 4th Birthday Bash and here are the furry kids available for adoption. There are more who will be forced to stay home but you can see their stories and photos at www.caninecanyonranch.org. We hope to meet you there !

All of our dogs are fixed with shots, housebroken, use a dog door and are just waiting for that forever home to find them. Dogs who will be vying for your attention and hoping to get adopted on Saturday:

Mugen: 6 mo. male Mastiff.lab mix, will be approx. 70-80 pounds when fully grown, cute as can be!

Cooper: 5 yr. old border collie/black lab. Went into shelter as a stray pup, sprung from jail at 5! Wonderful only dog, just needs a chance at having a real dog's life.

Newton and Missy: twin hairballs, not even two years old. Rescued from a puppy mill and have languished at the shelter until coming here. Slightly reserved but it doesn't take long to come out to play.

Cody: young male chi x, about 15 lbs. Was roaming in Alpine with his friend Ranger, already adopted. Cody likes to chase cats but is a lap dog waiting to find the right lap.

Cesar: Male Shar Pei/terrier mix with white eyes! Sweet and loving. STOP dog.

We hope to see you there!

Update on "Laska" the rescued Cattle Dog

Meet "Laska", so named by her first rescuer, caring neighbor Chris in Golden Hills. Chris is Ukranian and she named the dog Laska, which means "by God's Grace", a very appropriate name for this little orphan girl.

My husband picked up Laska's old "doghouse" form the abandoned house and she spent at least part of the night inside the nose cone, as the blankets were wet. from her We ended up getting mostly rain instead of snow and it wasn't too cold. She simply refuses to go into the other dry doghouses there. She was smart enough to use her teeth to pull the blankets out the door of the large doghouse-because the food bowl was in the back corner!! Smart girl. I did get a look at her teeth this morning and she appears to be quite young, about 6-9 months old. Why anyone would get a possibly purebred puppy and then stick her in a back yard to terrorize is beyond comprehension.

She is still terrified of other dogs so it will be some time before she can be moved over to the yard with the regular pack. She will be here for quite some time. If anyone knows any rehabilitation rescues, please feel free to call me or email. I'm really not qualified to work with dogs that are this scared. She is going to take a lot of patient rehabilitation and I need to continue my mutt rescue work with the pack of 10 that are ready for new homes already.
