Microscopic Parking Spaces - - GregL's Blog - Tehachapi News

Well, here is yet another disturbing side effect of modern development: microscopic parking lots and spaces. My wife and I went to the new shopping center on Tucker, where Subway and Del Taco are, this weekend. I was driving my F-150 because I had been hauling trash and tree limbs, and I had one heck of a time fitting into the parking spaces there. Not only is the parking lot very confined, but the spaces are so small it's unbelievable. I watched a guy in an Expedition try to maneuver into a spot and he had to back up about four or five times, not because he was a poor driver but because it simply is not physically possible to pull right into a spot there with a large vehicle.

I already know the answer to this question, but I have to ask it anyway, what the heck were the developers thinking???!!! There are lots of farms and horses in Tehachapi and the surrounding area which means there are lots of large trucks! Gives us some room! But of course, I know that a parking space itself does not directly generate revenue. It does, however, do so indirectly. And I for one will be hesitant to go to a place where I can't easily fit my truck, and only have six inches on each side! I love Tehachapi, but this is just another step toward urbanization, with this little town slowly becoming more like big cities. Bummer.

Is there any law that states you can not take up two spaces for your big truck?

When I was stationed in South Korea some years ago, I thought the road builders wasted a lot of money panting lines on the highway for lanes. For example, it was common for either side of the highway that had 2, 3, or 4 lanes; you'd see the Koreans driving in their own self-proclaimed lane.

Small parking spots are stupid.....What also makes no sense is when they put flower planters in the parking spaces like they did over in the Wall greens and city slickers parking lots.

Jun 23, 2008 at 09:06 AM : gube, you're such...

gube, you're such an innocent...of course, the design of that parking lot had to be fully compliant with all the proper standards, including handicapped provisions, number of spaces, and of course, roadway and parking space dimensions.

Unfortunately for F-150 truck drivers, however, the number of spaces required per square foot of business is very high (gotta accommodate that once-a-year, day after Thanksgiving shopping crush you know) while the required dimensions per stall is very low...I believe 9' wide is what they provided in that lot, although you can see even 8' widths labeled "COMPACT".

Not the way it ought to be done, for all the reasons you note, especially here. A City Planner with a Clue would recognize that, release the developer from the need to provide as much total parking (measured in spaces) and require each space to be larger. Fat chance of that with the incumbent.

While you're critiquing parking lots, have you noticed the blind corner caused by the dumpster enclosure in front of Starbucks? Wonder how many trips to Maaco that baby's gonna cause....
