Yes nature is amazing. The bumble bees hAve been out in full force on the penstamon, snapdragons and roses. I love when my gardens are in full bloom and the bees are buzzing. Makes me sad though that my honeybees didn't make it through the winter.

That last one is so the coolest. My backyard tonight... I hear cars, a few dogs barking, children playing, and a few fireworks (like those little popper ones and some whistling ones). I love summer nights, when everyone is out.

And coming from my house: intermittent crying and screaming... if you've had a kid with a bad diaper rash, you know what I mean. What must the neighbors think :(

Great pics GregL. I spent 30 min a few weeks ago trying to get a pic of an ant carrying a rather large flower blossom but with my little digital camera it didn't come out.

I like the sounds at night the best in BVS. The shrill cry of the redtail, chirping of bats, the owls who whoing and night russeling sounds are cool.

You probably know this madkow but if his diaper rash is very red with little white patches/dots it may be a yeast infection instead of a diaper rash. Poor guy with a sore bum...he sure was good last night.

Oh my gosh, I love Flagstaff. I never had the opportunity to explore there as much as I would like, but it was one of the greatest places to stop for the night. The rest area there is up high, very quiet and cool. How would you describe the sound of wind going through pines? It kinda sounds to me like someone saying "shh".

I think it's just a regular old rash. Just giving him some naked time outside- which he certainly doesn't mind- and ointment when he has to wear a diaper :) By far the worst was when he was on antibiotics for an ear infection. I hope he never has to go on antibiotics again...

Re: ants in the kitchen. I discovered a perfect way to kill ants on the kitchen counter without poisoning your family! Just get a bottle of Windex and when you see an ant, spray him!! He will die in his tracks and you can wipe him up with a paper towel leaving no poisonous residue in your kitchen. This wasn't my original idea, but it works great and I use that method all the time. Obviously, in areas that ant spray isn't a problem, go ahead and zap them with Raid or other bug sprays...

I don't mind bugs outside in their natural element, but when they come inside on MY turf, they are dead meat!

Greg, just like Tehachapi, it's a windy here too. I'll use sticks or anything I can find to brace up flowers, plants, etc. There are tools for the trade but why spend the money when you can just use nature to do the job. Besides, things used in nature won't look out of place if it's shown in the picture.

I'll use sticks or anything I can find to brace up flowers, plants, etc. There are tools for the trade but why spend the money when you can just use nature to do the job. Besides, things used in nature won't look out of place if it's shown in the picture.
</itunes:summary>

To get rid of ants inside your house: Wherever you can, sprinkle red hot chili pepper around; it works every single time.

For some reason, the only place the ants like to show up is in my computer room where the wall plug is (electronic waves or whatever that's called). All I had to do was put the chili pepper on a piece of tape, on to the outlet, and like magic, they were gone; I removed the tape and they came back, so tape's back on. I spent too much ($3 for a small jar) for the red hot chili pepper; should have gone to the dollar store though.

Good blog; good ideas w/o any slings and arrows.

Jul 9, 2008 at 05:07 PM : This actually takes...

This actually takes place in my front yard. I have two hummingbird feeders hanging on my porch. I thought the two little macho males would share, but no, they fight over one, then when it's empty, they go fight over the other one. One of the feeders seems to empty really quickly, I couldn't figure out how or why. There's no leak, and I know the h'birds don't suck that fast.

Yesterday I got my answer. I was watching them out of my kitchen window. Suddenly, there was a very bright yellow bird who had landed on this feeder. He perched on top of one of the "flowers" bent over (literally upside down) and helped himself to my little guys' nectar! Cheeky bastard, lol. I guess his size intimidates the h'birds, because they don't challenge him - they sit on a tree branch and bitch at him.

I guess I'll just have to fill it up more often...

Jul 9, 2008 at 06:07 PM : What a great story!...

What a great story! I've tried to catch pictures of hummingbirds, but I never have camera ready and they're pretty elusive anyway. I've noticed that the hummingbirds at our place will go up to the red patio lights and the red in a flag, looking for nectar I guess.

Jul 9, 2008 at 06:07 PM : I love...

I love hummingbirds...I was amazed the first time I saw them actually stop and sit on a branch. I guess I shouldn't laugh, but when they fly up to my multi-colored windspinners it's pretty funny. They go to my petunias once in awhile. Sometime I will have 4 or 5, but it's mostly the two little males. I never realized they were so territorial either. Someitmes they will dive bomb at our heads, but they don't seem to fear us.

One has a bright red head, the other an emerald green. I should get out my digital camera and leave it sitting where I can grab it.

I wonder what that yellow bird is?
