Cherry picked data, biased samples, loaded words, red herrings, this test is a joke - don't bother. It has tobacco lobby tactics written all over it.

Monte Hieb has worked as chief engineer for the West Virginia Office of Miners Safety. I hope you understand that the coal mining industry is not a reliable source for debate on climate change. Clearly, Monte Hieb is not a climate scientist (though he seems to be an enthusiastic amateur fossil-hound with a really nice web site on W VA fossils.)

Why should anyone take the word of an amateur fossil-hound and a chief engineer from a coal mining outfit over the word of the vast majority of climate scientists? That's like saying a plumber knows more about building airplanes than a Boeing Engineer. Silly.

I am one of those "hell-bent..." people in Tehachapi - and i think things are heating up. I am not so proud as to think that I am the cause. I try to help the environment - I had a compost pile in my backyard for 2 years but I had to give it up as I needed the space. I have been into recycling for a long time - it was easier where I used to live.

I drive an SUV type vehicle that allows me to get in and out easier due to physical problems with my legs. I just don't think that we, humans, can make any changes that will reverse the current climatic trends.

What really bothers me is when people that disagree with me start making harsh and rude statements about me and my intelligence. Many seem to think that if I disagree with them then I live in the pockets of big tobacco (I quit smoking 10 years ago) or that I want to pay more for gas (as I said I need the bigger vehicle due to physical problems) or that I am just not smart enough to be able to see the things that their giant brains allow them to see.

I think we can and should try to make our world cleaner. I just don't want some political hack taxing me and then making laws that I must obey. Has any one studied how Yellowstone Park was seriously damaged by good intentioned people that just didn't know what they were doing who were put in charge? How about all the trees that were saved by the "save a tree" people in the mountains of Southern California which led to the destruction of the forests there?

We need to protect the planet - but lets have the ideas come from people that are in for theplanet not to sell alternative products or an agenda of lowering our standards to theirs.

But I also believe that the global warming trend is not the cause of man, and not because of that silly test that I posted here! Can't we all just get along? We should do whatever we can to clean up the environment without the doomsday hype that goes along with the current global warming bandwagon.

It doesn't take a giant brain to see that a substantial change is occurring on this planet in regards to the climate. It's easy for you to say or believe that man is not causing it because "global warming" is on such a huge scale that it is nearly unimaginable that man has caused or at least been a major contributor to it. Also, you won't be around when the true effects of such a change are realized, so you really have no motivation to believe that we need to change the way we live as a whole and we need to do it NOW. In an ideal situation, everyone would be willing to make a small change that would add to the overall effort. Unfortunately many people are driven by money, convenience, etc. and stubbornly refuse to do anything because it's not "their" responsibility, so those people must be MADE to change. Maybe not the individual so much, but the companies that those individuals run/work for. If you "don't want some political hack taxing me and then making laws that I must obey" then how do you suggest the government be run? how do you expect order to be maintained or the country to thrive? or do you support anarchism?

I never denied that water vapor is the major greehouse gas. I am perfectly aware of what was claimed in the past, it was obviously wrong, we move on with better technology for actually monitoring changes on the planet. This is something you can't use the past to predict, you would have to assume that our understanding of the earth and it's process isn't improving, but it is. If water vapor is the vast majority of greenhouse gas and we're not adding any water vapor to the atmosphere and yet the level of carbon dioxide is rising rapidly while the temperature of earth is also rising, one tends to make the connection. Is it just coincidence that these trends accelerated away from natural rates since the industrial revolution? No way.

I listen to the facts that are presented, and I make my own decision, I don't buy into what the mainstream media tries to feed us.

I wish I was as blissfully ignorant as you are Guy, I remember that feeling, it was great, I was in elementary school the last time I felt that way.

May 15, 2007 at 05:05 AM : Inconvenient truths...

Inconvenient truths

By David Deming, Ph.D.
The Sun

The largest single factor driving the debate on global warming is the Al Gore film An Inconvenient Truth. The movie has been marketed as a scientific documentary, but in fact it is an artful and deceptive propaganda film.

The claims made in An Inconvenient Truth are either wrong, disingenuous, or misleading. Gore frightens his audience by showing the breakup of the Larsen Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula. He then states that if the West Antarctic Ice Sheet were to melt it would raise sea levels worldwide by 20 feet. But Gore conveniently neglects to inform us that over the last several decades, 80 to 90 percent of Antarctica has been growing colder, in direct contradiction to greenhouse theory. The main ice accumulation in Antarctica is not melting, it’s getting thicker.

Gore leads his audience to believe that for the last 650,000 years of Earth’s climate history, carbon dioxide has determined temperature. But it’s well documented in the scientific literature that changes in temperature preceded changes in carbon dioxide. Temperature controlled carbon dioxide by regulating the release and absorption of this gas from the oceans.

An Inconvenient Truth fails to inform viewers that projections of future warming from carbon dioxide are based on computer models whose reliability and accuracy are completely unknown. As a scientist who has done computer modeling and studied geophysical inverse theory, I find it alarming that people are seriously considering restructuring our entire civilization on the basis of computer models that cannot even be tested.

Gore’s claim that “zero percent” of scientists disagree on global warming is not true, and demonstrates a profound ignorance of science and the provisional nature of scientific knowledge. The former vice president of the United States could also use a lesson on basic economics. He makes the remarkable claim that we won’t damage our economy by switching from fossil fuels – which are inexpensive, reliable, and abundant – to alternative fuel sources that are expensive, unreliable, and scarce. Europe’s experience demonstrates otherwise. As reported in the Washington Post April 9, Europe’s attempt to reduce carbon dioxide emissions has proven to be a bureaucratic nightmare, with high energy prices, unforeseen consequences, and “significant economic costs.” European businesses are losing customers to Chinese competitors.

Oh yes, China. The Chinese currently have 2,000 coal-fired power plants, and are proceeding to enthusiastically grow their economy by building a new plant every week. Incredibly, Al Gore says that China should get a free pass on carbon dioxide. He wants the average American to shoulder the responsibility for stopping global warming. The package for An Inconvenient Truth instructs us how to accomplish this. We are supposed to alter the composition of Earth’s atmosphere by switching from incandescent to fluorescent light bulbs, keeping the tires on our cars properly inflated, and planting trees. These recommendations are only exceeded by pop singer Sheryl Crow’s recent assertion that global warming can be stopped by restricting the use of toilet paper.

On the morning of April 8, Charlotte, North Carolina, experienced a low temperature of 21 degrees Fahrenheit. It was the coldest temperature ever recorded in Charlotte for the month of April. But if you think record cold weather is going to falsify global warming, you're hopelessly naive. On April 11, a Purdue professor told the Christian Science Monitor that “this is what you might expect of global warming,” because global warming “isn’t necessarily always a warmer climate, but a more variable climate.” In other words, all weather variations are evidence for global warming. I can’t make this stuff up.

Global warming has long since moved from scientific hypothesis to pseudoscientific mumbo-jumbo. It is the latest and most successful in a long line of disingenuous excuses to wage war on technology, progress, and the human mind. The predatory demagogues who peddle this dangerous nonsense are enemies of the human race.

I never thought those comments about incorrect spelling and bad grammer (or was it bad spelling & incorrect grammer?) could 've been the good old days! Now I have waded through comments about the validity of accurate links, various aspects and definitions of legal vs illegal, alien vs immigrant, etc. Look at the comments from Sam's post last week, what was there 12 pages and growing? Used to be he would get 4 or 5 comments and I generally agreed with his observations which didn't require any comment from me. Too much hate vented here lately, not any real discussions and points raised.

Nasty? Where was I nasty? I've challenged peoples point of view because it stimulates discussion, it's always interesting to see what people have to say and how set they are in their own beliefs. I've been quite sarcastic at times, but if I offended anyone then I apologize.

Now for something completely off the topic, aero, what's with all the commas? (not criticizing or anything, just curious)

RM6,

No age does not really matter in this topic but does mark a reason many don't buy into the hype.

I'm 35 and remember going to school and being told how we were all going to freeze, the oceans were going to be impassable due to the thicker ice sheets, and that we were going to have a lack of food due to the colder temps in the south. The funny thing is that the reasons they gave us kids were the same reasons they are giving now except it wasn't call global warming but the new ice age. Over the last 20 years the theme changed and the same so called experts reversed themselves some and now call it global warming.

So which is it? An ice age or global warming that the pollution is causing?

I'm always amazed when people deny that 1) global warming exists and 2) if there is global warming it is not caused by man.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Probably say it again sometime in the future ..... I can prove the earth is flat simply by purposely eliminating any facts that would prove otherwise.

We all have the right to read and believe anything. But if you are to be "well-rounded," in your information gathering, you have to ---- I repeat, HAVE TO ---- read both sides. Sometimes it is really hard. I've been wading thru a book about how the left wing liberals caused the whole world to hate America which in turn cause 9/11. Some of the worst logic ever put into print .... but an occasional bit of insight that hadn't occured to me before.

There are so many ditto heads (why would you want to be called that?) of Rush Limbaughs on this site, that it is sometimes a useless exercise to try and get scientific (valid, documented, agreed upon within the scientific community) to be listened to and read. But - I continue to encourage everyone to really read both sides of this issue.

I wonder where Al Gore is leading that you refuse to go, aero? What are his "politics" that you disagree with? Al Gore presents information about global warming which you say you don't disagree with. Al Gore supports a cleaner & healthier planet, which you say you want also. So, what's your beef, exactly? I'm confused....

If it's only the handful of scientists that disagree about the level of human involvement in climate change that you want Gore to acknowledge, how much more "bully pulpit" do you want them to command? Seems to me everyone knows about them already. Just because there's a group of scientists who disagree, do they deserve 50/50 equal time? There's also a small group of scientists who question evolution; do they also deserve equal time in the scientific community? How about the Holocaust deniers, should they get equal time to revise history?

RM6,

So the newer predictions are more valid because of technology and observation advances. Then let me ask you one thing. Today they tell us there is a hole in the atmosphere that is getting bigger and that man is responsable for this hole, right. They tell us this because of the newer technologies that can see the hole. So can you tell me how they know that the hole was only created due to man's pollution? Was the hole there 200 years ago, 500 years ago, or is it new just like the technology that can see it?

Please tell me which "liberal media" are not giving time to scientists who dispute Al Gore's numbers. As I said, seems we all have heard their evidence, so what more do you expect?

You say that Al Gore wants money to go to research that only supports his POV. First, he's no longer in government, so he can "want" as much as any other citizen. He has no elected power to enforce his "wants." Second, please show me where research scientists who disagree with the consensus have applied for federal money & have been turned down just because they disagree. I don't usually buy into conspiracy theories without some supporting evidence.

As far as this fascination you have with the climate conditions on Mars, it really doesn't interest me until they have core samples to examine, as we have here on this planet. Come back to Earth, aero, we miss you!

jer72, good point, but you can't deny that the release of ozone depleting chemicals like cfcs has had quite a noticable effect on the ozone layer. I think that technological and knowledge advances must account for something in evaluating all the "global warming" claims. So do you believe that global warming is actually happening (and will continue to happen) or do you think that all the media and political hype is bs?

Let me get this straight, aero, are you denying that global warming is happening (at least partly because of the greenhouse gasses that man has released into the atmosphere), or do you just disagree with all the hype and political attention it is getting?

RM6,

I believe that most of it is media hype. Now let me explain way.

Way back when my father was a kid he told me about how there was alot more water in the Tehachapi area. There was Proctor Lake on the East end and a number of creeks and springs. Then came the '52 earthquake and the valley started to dry up. It was drying up regradless that he told me about the early and late snow falls the valley would get regularly. By the time I was born Proctor Lake was gone and no streams were flowing except for the same ones that currently flow in the area today. Now remember that this whole time I was being told in school how we were going into an ice age. We had some record breaking snow stroms and a flood during the '80s yet the valley was getting drier. Not until I left and went into the Navy during the '90s did we started to see drier weather patterns.

So what changed? Just the weather. The experts were still talking about how bad pollution was and is but they changed there ideas when the weather patterns changed and there ice age disappeared.

I don't think you can judge whether or not global warming is happening by local weather patterns, even if you did, global warming suggests a drier SW US and more extreme weather occurances like the record breaking floods of '82-83 and '97-'98 and the very dry winters like the one in the late '70's the early '00s and the one we just had. The change in weather is one of the predicted consequences of global warming along with sea level rise, changes in the ecosystem, etc...

I agree that one local weather pattern does not make a global pattern. But my point was the fact that the drier weather in Tehachapi started after a single natural event. That event was the '52 quake that killed off the springs and creeks in the area and making much drier well before any global warming theory. Now if one earthquake can change the local weather then why can't the many earthquakes, volcanos and other natural event affect the global weather patterns?

In my opinion I believe that the current weather patterns of the world are a combination of natural global changes cause by earthquake and volcanos and from solar changes that Aero has spoke of.

jer72, I hope for the sake of future generations that you are right, but what if our burning of fossil fuels is causing a rise in global temperature in tandem with the natural changes? And, while I agree with you that the '52 earthquake DID result in the loss of surface water in the Tehachapi valley, the earthquake DID NOT cause the drier weather patterns that have occurred since then.

I have never said that we should help clean the air of any and almost all pollution. I want cleaner air for my kids, grandkids and more but I don't buy into the global warming science. How do you know that the local weather didn't change due to the earthquake changing the amount of surface water in the area. Less surface water means less humidity in the air doesn't it? Less humidity in the air mean less wet weather which means drier air. Then isn't there a remote possibility that the eathquake is to partly blame for the drier weather Tehachapi is now having?

jer72, with all due respect I must tell you that you are dead wrong on the connection of an earthquake changing local weather patterns, the pacific storm systems that affect our area during the rainy season form thousands of miles offshore and in that respect, are not affected by local conditions. While the low humidity might delay the rain a little bit, it wouldn't delay it that long, especially with a significant storm. What low humidity will do is make it possible for it to snow when the temperature is well into the 40s.

Look man, I've seen it happen many times, its the evaporative cooling effect, here is a PICTURE to prove my claim (http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=5zm5k4w). The pic was taken in front of my house and if you look closely the thermometer reads 40.6 degrees and there are snow flakes falling in the background! I have seen it flake at up to 45 degrees. Humidity obviously is the measure of the amout of water vapor in the air, at the onset of some storms the humidity is low and that alone can account for snow levels about 1000 ft below what they should be (considering the temp) and much below the freezing level. I will reiterate what I said earlier, earthquakes DO NOT cause weather pattern changes. Now you can take my word for it or we can consult former Tehachapi resident and chief meteorologist of KBAK, Miles Muzio.

RM6, thanks for holding it down while I'm not able to post! :) I think your points are sound and valid. Jer72, GregL, and Aerospace1, I will return to my original question. Why has environmental responsibility become such a right wing vs. left wing battle? It seems as though everyone arguing against human induced global warming agrees that we should be creating a cleaner safer place for our kids, but get all bent out of shape when GW is brought up. I don't get it. Anyone who has been to LA, Bako, San Fran, NY, Detroit, Pittsburgh, London, Paris, etc., etc., etc., could probably agree that the air sucks. There have been countless circumstances throughout California, who probably has the strictest water regulations, of tap water contamination due to pesticide, and or chemical, and or any other industrial by-product run off. OK, so say all the crap we, particularly big business, put into the air, onto the ground, and into the water has absolutely nothing to do with global warming, or an impending ice age for all you old schoolers. It is a fact that cancer rates have flown off the charts this past century. Allergies, asthma and many forms of inexplainable disease have absolutely run rampant over the past 100 years. I just don't see why it is such a travesty to start holding the actions of business accountable and encouraging people to be a little less lazy and seek ways to save energy and spend time, money, and energy on environmentally responsible products, endeavors, and lifestyles. Now, I'm stoked to hear that many of you guys are carpooling, driving fuel efficient cars, etc., etc., you are great examples to others. But please, instead of using that stuff to throw back at people who care, why not continue to find ways to save energy, waste, and in turn money, and encourage others to do the same

May 17, 2007 at 09:05 PM : You all have it wrong....

You all have it wrong. The single biggest contributer to global warming is the hot air coming from the likes of Al Gore and Ed, I have integrity just ask me, Grimes. The second is the common catalytic converter. True story. The correlation is so obvious. Not long after the catalytic converter became so wide spread the Earth's temp started to rise. Ever notice how much heat is produced by one? We had burned good old leaded gas straight through the tail pipe for decades without much problem, then poof here comes the cure-all converter and the result is, you guessed it, global warming.

For rm6 I have what seems an obvious theory to explain the snowflakes at 40 degrees. While the temperature was apparently 40.6 when you took the photo, I'm sure that reflected the temp near ground level which is often warmer than the air just a few hundred feet up especially shortly after or during passage of a cold front. I would guess the flakes just didn't have time to melt before they made contact with the surface. It is quite likely that had you taken a reading an hour later it would have indicated colder air near ground level.

Hey Swi, I'm a little worried about you. You say in your post you are stoked because a few tree huggers are carpooling. Ever look up the word stoked? The definition in the Microsoft Word dictionary is "an excited or euphoric state, especially from haven taken drugs"! Do we need to talk bro?

I didn;t say it couldn't snow at 40 degrees on the ground and you must not have check the link I attached. If you would have it stated that humidity DOES NOT make rain or snow but is just the moisture in the air. It also stated that it is the dew point that is a more involved in when it will rain or snow. I have accepted that this information blows my comment and theory out of the water. Heck I didn't even attack you for your idea that humidity caused snow which I knew was wrong as I knew that Snow needed cold to be created in the upper atmosphere. At least I was able to admit my flaw.

Let's bring a couple "facts" up-to-date.

First, the ozone depletion issue has pretty much been solved. How? Glad you asked. They stopped selling massive amounts of freon, among other things. The ozone hole has gotten considerably smaller and is no longer considered a serious issue.

Second, the smog in the LA basin (and other California valleys) has improved enormously. There were times in the late sixties when you could not see across the street --- I mean that literally. This is not true anymore. How? Glad you asked. They put restrictions on polluters like the furniture manufacturing industry, among others, and they put additives in our gasoline.

Both these issues were solved to a very large degree thru clean air initiatives. I can clearly remember the outcry from the California big industries on both these issues. The solutions were going to cause all businesses to leave California, everyone would go bankrupt and we were all going to go hungry because there would be no jobs and we would be a third world state. Again - I am not exaggerating. More recently, the same outcry was heard when smoking was banned from restaurants and then bars and then outdoor auditoriums. Well, prices went up, then wages went up and we all have the pleasure of living in a cleaner state.

You see a problem, you create a solution, you proceed with implementation. But first, you have to own up to the problem.

P.S. The dittos know who they are. If you aren't one - don't acknowledge the comment.

</itunes:summary>

I'd be careful associating yourself to Zoro though, I picked up from another post on here that everyone was mad at him for helping all the illegals. Debating with you is obviously better suited for LoriMorales. She seems to have been around quite a bit longer than me. Good points too, by the way, Lori.

Sounds good on the surface but consider these facts. MTBE, a chemical added to gasoline to help clean the air, has been found in ground water. The EPA does not have enough test data to determine the health effects, however, early tests point to a potential cancer risk. It also makes the water undrinkable due to bad taste and smell. As for those evil big businesses causing all our problems, please consider where we would be without them. Probably a third world country I suspect. Remember it is big, and small, business that fuels our economy and provides us with our high standard of living. If most of us sincerely considered how life would be without those job sources and revenue contributers we would cringe at the thought of losing them. The heavy restrictions on business in CA have caused an exodus, just check out the growth in states like Idaho, Colorado and Nevada and you will see where they have gone. This fact along with out of control social programs have led to the recent budget crisis in Sacramento. The next time you vote for a clean whatever initiative check out the science. Or better yet just do what that big business guy Al Gore does and buy more carbon credits, that will surely lower emisions. Wink, Wink! Sometimes the cure can be worse than the illness. Now I need to step outside and gulp down some of that clean Teh air. Never mind, my undocumented neighbor is cooking meth again.

Isn't it past your bedtime Kid. Thanks for the clue on Zoro, I'll scratch him from my list.

Unless of course you are among the elite and buy bottled water. They say that bottled could be harmful when it comes in plastic. I don't' believe I ever suggested that we not protect the environment, I only ask that you see all possibilities and not jump in just because it sounds good. By the way that is essentially how we started using MTBE. We jumped before we had all the facts. Kind of like the evil big business drug companies.

This has ZERO to do with Al Gore and Michael Moore. This is NOT a political issue. It's a SCIENTIFIC issue.

That article was originally posted by NewsMax and besides, one NEWS article vrs the IPCC report, that is just a completely bogus notion to begin with. It's like asking a politician to build a space station. Leave the science to scientists and stop trying to make this a liberal bashing exercise. At this point people are more intersted in bashing their political opponents than they are in the actual issues, which is totally sad.

This is SCIENCE, not POLITICS.

Because I can’t help rubbing it in I’ll show you all how actually DEAD the so-called debate really is, let's take the nature of the media you are latching onto to prove your points into account.

Let's see -

We have a small string of fringe political papers and pundents posting articles about how Global Warming isn't real, or is real but isn't caused by man, and even a few that now say it is real and is caused by man but we shouldn't do anything about because it will destroy our economy.

Those publications include:

NewsMax
Rush Limbaugh
American Thinker
Conservative Voice

...and who else? Can't seem to find any. Oh well, I'm sure they're out there.

Do you notice a trend here? All four publications are a) NOT science related b) Mostly political commentary c) On the Fringe side of Conservative Politics

Now, let's compare that to this rather small sampling of SCIENCE related publications and PEER-REVIEWED journals that say the contrary to what the above say...

Sci-Tech Today
Scientific American
National Geographic
American Medical News
Medical News Today
