I don;t have any children yet but I always find myself talking to older relatives - aunts, my nana, my mum, and getting their ideas/suggestions etc on names. I'm sure when the time comes, I will have some names picked out, though if I am anything like the other women in my family, I will change my mind at the last minute.

I know when my mum had us kids she had names picked out, but then, they didn;t suit us she said. As soon as we were born, she'd take a look, and decide what to name us based on what she felt we looked like. My sister in law just had a baby boy a few months back and the same situation happened with her. She had a name picked for months but when she took a look at her new bundle of joy, she picked a new name.

I'd really like to keep some of my family's traditional names when I have kiddies.

I remember watching a TV show once ( I think it was Ellen) and they said when you have more than a few names to choose from there is a simple technique. Stand at the bottom of the stairs, and yell them all out, whichever comes out easily and fluently is the name you should pick, after all, you'll spend a large majority of time yelling that name anyways LOL

Well, my parents named us all Dar's. When I had my oldest son I named him with a D. Then I got married 5 years later to a man with a D. So when I had my second son, his named started with a D. My first son's middle name is after my brother that died but it was also my grandfather's name. My second son's middle name is my husband's uncle which is also my husbands grandfather's name that died when my husband was real and very close to. So, in really not meaning both of my kids middle name is their great-grandfather's name. So I guess we might be starting something. My mother worked with a lady with a name that mom liked, so she just replaced the M to a D and presto, there's my name. My middle name is my mom's.

that's funny Smokey about the stairs. I had originally thought to name my so Kyle, but my mom couldn't pronounce right. She kept putting a twang on it. So I didn't. Now I couldn't imagine my son a different name. He was nick named Jack in my belly by my parents because I couldn't come up with a name. In fact I have a Christmas card that my parents gave before my son was born and it is labeled "Jack". I need to pull that out and show to my dad again...I bet forgot all about it.

All the kids' names on my hubby's side begin with a "J". His mom's name is also a "J" name, and they call his dad "Jack" as a nickname. Weirds me out, frankly.

When my mom was pregnant with each of my two older brothers, she had picked out a girl's name too, just in case. It was Candide. I'm sooo glad she changed her mind when I finally came along.

But when I was around 6 or 7, I realized that I didn't have a middle name like all my friends & all my brothers. My brothers had important middle names; one after my father, one after a favorite uncle, and the last one was my mother's maiden name. I felt slighted. So I asked my mom why I didn't have a middle name, too. She said, "When you get married, then you'll have a middle name." And of course she was right; I do use my maiden name as my middle. So the family name live on.

Once before I was married, I had to fill out a police report for a stolen bicycle. When the officer asked for my middle name, I said "none." He wrote down on the report, "nun." I figured right then & there I wasn't gettin' my bike back.

Southeners come up with some bizarre names too. My mother was Virgie Easter, my father Hulon Hamilton. I have an Aunt Sarah Perrilee, an Aunt Nellie Albanie. Most of my cousins in MS are still called by both first and middle names.

Our second daughter named her three sons with the "k" sound and middle names that started with 'a' - we have Cody Allen, Kyle Anthony and Christopher Andrew. We have another grandson named Harrison - his father's middle name is Harry which was his grandfather's name so - son of Harry.

Kind of an offshoot here...all my dogs have 'human' names - anyone elses?

My husband and I couldn't agree on names at all. We finally settled on finding an English-sounding name to match the origins of our last name. It matches him though. His name sounds stubborn and strong, and that's what he is. I like weird names too much- not misspellings or anything, just non-English names- so I was overruled. But if I have a girl next, I'm totally going to give her a great name!

One of my dogs is named Jesse. My best friend named him that because I wanted to let her actually name a dog for once. The other one is named after a previous dog my husband had. What do they call them- life dogs? When you have a dog that is so very special and completely changes your life? That's what this dog was for my husband, so he named our other dog in memory.

oohchild, if you read the entire article, you would have seen where Ms Slick actually used the name 'god' for her child two months prior to birth in a magazine interview, referring to the gender as 'he'...so maybe when she gave birth to a girl, she changed her mind. Who knows - it was the 60's afterall, lol!

Great topic Joty! My folks named my brother and myself after saints, lol! Gregory Paul, and Peter David, good Catholic names, even though I'm a recovered Catholic now.

I met someone who named her daughter 'Safiya', and I said, do you mean Saphire, she said no, Safiya, S-a-f-i-y-a. I thought oh god, that poor child, she's going to have to explain that to everyone she meets in life. Not one minute later the mother was going through the same explanation with someone else. I think sometimes people just don't think things through.

Now you're bringing up some memories Joty. My grandmother on my father's side had some very strange names for her kids, it's those southern roots that'll get you every time. Her first daughter was named Loree Effigee, one of her sons had the middle name of Laverne another was Welton Wayne. My mother was named Ira after her father and always received mail addressing Mr. Ira ****. And I was almost tagged Donna Rebecca after my dad Don and my great grandmother Rebecca.

When I named my kids I went further back on our family tree and picke names from there. Some of the very old southern names were very nice. My grandkids have the popular names of the day, Meghan Marie, Ashton James, and Price Prescott (two old family last names, God help the kid). I argued my heart out with my daughter-in-law on this last one. Who want's to go through life with the initials PP? My poor mom had enough trouble with IP.

The funniest name I can remember was a child in a cousin's 2nd grade class in New Orleans. The child was named Urine, pronounced 'you-reene', I always wonder whatever happened to her and if she changed the spelling when she was old enough to know the meaning.

About the dogs, Lord help us I don't know what came over us. We must have had too much wine. I have our two babies that we named, Mignon Jolie (roughly translated means petite, delicate and pretty) and Brie Beignet (ben-yea), Brie being a robust cheese with a whitish rind and pale yellow interior (she was supposed to be completely white, but turned out to have bits of pale apricot coloring) and the beignet is actually a light square doughnut sprinkled with powdered sugar and I've had this many times at the Cafe DuMond in the French Quarter with chicory coffee. Gotta sweeten that bitter coffee with as much sugar as you can get your hands on.

Amazingly, my girls, both born from the same litter, turned out to be exact opposites like their names. Mignon is fast as the wind but very dainty and delicate and pretty. Brie on the other hand, is very strong and muscled, feisty, mischievous and sweet, just as they were named. There was no hint of this as puppies it was just one of those weird coincidences that happen sometimes.

I don't know much about Saints, but I'm sure my husband and his 3 brothers are named for them. Michael, Stephen (uh, this will be another blog - but Stephen became Terri last Nov - the whole enchilada is now a taco if you get my drift), Martin and James. His four sisters are Carol, Katherine, Linda and Alice. My FIL is Delmer Eugene.

Palindrome names are fun. One of my granddaughters is Hannah.

This I'm sure has got to be urban legend, but remember the story of the father who saw "Female Smith" on the hospital crib so that's what he had put on the BC - pronouned Femolly. And the woman who named her twins after lemon and lime jello? Laymongelo and Lymaygelo? Could any parent be that cruel? According to Starchaser, I guess so. Urine? Omgawd!

When I was a kid we had neighbors whose last name was Na. Her name was Anna and her son was Dean.

Kirk, and my mother convinced him to go with Scott (which is what she wanted) by telling him I was being named after Scotty in engineering. My folks are too awesome. :)

No, interesting stories around my name. My parents went with pretty traditional names all around. All I do know is that my mother originally wanted to call me Christine and my grandmother(who has A LOT of influence in the family) told her that she shouldn't and said that Christina was the "proper" thing to call me. So here I am today Christina. At least I do have my great-grandmother's name as a middle name.......she was my mom's favorite person ever!

Being that my father is full blooded Indian and we grew up in that way, my brothers and I have some old family names. In fact, our last name is not really ours. One of my relations acquired it when he tried to enlist for WW1. He was told that he needed two names and he asked a friend of his if he could use his last name. My family has had it since. Being Indian, I have heard that joke about the names and many other racist Indian jokes over the years. I guess you would put it next to the racist joke about Chinese family's naming their children from the sound of silverware dropping on the floor huh Joty? I am sure you didn't mean anything by it, at least that is what most say after making a racist joke. By the way, my wife is Chinese and we did not use either way to name our two children.

I have 4 kids of my own. I picked the names because I liked them...except for my son, who is named after his father, who was named after his father. Fred Brown.....Brown coming from his grandfathers mothers maiden name. I didn't like the name, but felt obligated. it was very hard to look at his sweet little newborn face and call him FRED. So I call him buddy. He's my little buddy. The 3 girls, I picked the names because I liked them....One daughter was named after their fathers sisters Terrie and Sandra Jean, Her name is Terrie Jean, Robyn Michelle, (Michelle is the middle name of my sister) and Melissa Nicole.

My mothers kids are Tony, Sally, Brenda, Cory, and Lisa....Guess who got stuck being named after a grandmother?

My grandparents names were Cecil Doreatha ( grandma and yes Cecil is spelled like a man). Grandfathers name was Doctor Franklin ( he was not a doctor) the joke in the family is that he was named after the "doctor". On a side note, on my dad's birth certificate it says his father is some no one has ever heard of and my dad was marked a female ( but so was my brother on his birth certificate...huh makes ya think...lol.

My other grandmother's name was Florence Geneva but they called her Toots. My aunt has an odd middle name that I have never heard before but can't think of it right now.
