Well, of course we all know I'm old (proud of it) ..... and yes, I sometimes did things I had been warned not to. Let's see ..... I stomped around the back of the Motor City Speedway which was just a junk yard. Stepped on a nail - just like I was told would happen. I walked in front of the swings at the park - yup - got hit in the head, just like I was told would happen.

We did not however, play with dangerous fire producing "rockets." But we had an aunt who, as a girl, was seriously burned from 4th of July fireworks. No one had to tell us how dangerous these products were.

So, sorry Gube - at a very early age, I learned to really pay attention to what my parents told me not to do. And oh, lets not forget I was not out running the streets at 3:00 a.m.

Of course, we are assuming these juvies had interested parents. We may very well be assuming too much. And - gee - have to show my smart alecky side here - we are also assuming these were boyz that had the ability to learn from examples. That may be too much assuming also.

I had brothers - and they protected me from the bullies in the neighborhood and were particularly protective if I came up with some hair brained idea that could very possibly get me hurt or destroy property. But - they were very smart boyz.

And rm6 - if they were 30 somethings - these "boyz" should be arrested, tried (and convicted!!) and sent to JAIL. Get them put away because they obviously do not possess the necessary two - that's right, just two - brain cells to make a good decision. Most of us have more cells, but you have to have at least two to rub together to get some action.

I grew up in Wyoming where fireworks were sold everywhere to anyone at any age. We used to have Bottle rocket fights......We would stand about 50 feet apart and shoot bottle rockets at each other.........those were good times. Kids today miss out on so much fun. .............I have two boyz and they are boyz. They play hard and they do boy things like shoot birds and play with knifes.....................Blaming the parents is a cop-out.

Bullies always pick on the smart girl. And gube - really? You let your boyz play with knives? They have guns and they shoot birds? And they shot rockets off at each other?

Sure hope no terrible accident takes your darlings from you. It does happen, ya know - and should something terrible happen, I'll absolutely blame you. You've told them, and made it clear, that dangerous behavior is not only acceptable, but expected.

And then we may have the good luck of additional young adults who drink too much, shot off illegal fire rockets that will burn down some building. Hopefully the building will be empty and no one will be burned alive. It does happen, ya know.

I'm not sure what to hope for to save you and your boyz from danger: 1) maybe something just a little terrible will happen to you and yours and you'll all learn a valuable lesson and not play dangerously, 2) maybe your boyz will be put away for burning down a building, but not forever because no one was killed during their play-date, or gee, 3) they grow up and accidentally kill their brother by throwing a knife at him. It does happen, ya know.

Some families completely escape the injuries received by millions from dangerous activities and the results are just another generation of kids shooting fire rockets, shooting birds and throwing knives.

I do hope you stay safe - teach your kids to play safe - and goodness, could you just play a game of baseball, or help me across the street when I need it, or go to the fair, maybe a ruff & tuff game of tug-of-war? If extra aggression must be spent, play football or soccer.

Lori who said anything about throwing knifes????They both have several knifes in their knife collection.....Believe me Lori it only takes a cut or two and they will respect the knife....I also did not say anything about my boys having bottle rocket fights but I wouldn't put it pass them.....After all they are boyz....I have 3 brothers a 1 sister and all of them turned out ''normal. I was the black sheep of my family. I got into a lot of stuff that drove my mom and dad crazy. when I hear people quickly blame the parents for their kids behavior it makes me laugh.......I had good parents.....ASS WHOPPINGS were a daily affair for me.......A belt across a bare ass really hurts but it didn't hurt enough to stop me from having more ''fun' I also have 4 girls but I let my old lady handle them.......the boyz are all mine..........They are good kids..........They are not girlie boyz............

But, I'll fess up - I have a smart mouth too, and that got me in trouble with the teachers. Soccer for sissies? The teen-age and professional games look pretty rough to me. And they have no advantage of 20 pounds of padding like the football players.

Gube, Have you ever watched professional soccer, high school soccer, or club/indoor soccer? I'm not talking about AYSO. It can get very down and dirty. There is plenty of body slamming and tackling only these kids aren't wearing protective gear! Have you ever been kicked in the face, stomach, leg, by a cleated foot? Have you ever been hit by a soccer ball going who knows how fast on your bare skin on a cold day? Have you ever taken one in the throat? Let me tell ya it's not fun! I suggest you give it another look...it definitely isn't a sissy sport. I know plenty of people who have had broken bones and surgery because of this "sissy" sport.

Oh, and unless your boys are hunters or something and have taken some safety courses I'm going to have to agree with Lori, on the whole gun/knife issue. My husband and I may be over cautious with our kids(they are all pretty young still), but his job revolves around emergencies, and sadly MANY of them could have been prevented if the parents had been a bit more aware and responsible. I for one NEVER want to be in that position.

Also, I have to agree that bullies pick on the weak kids. They usually do this because they have low self esteem and need to boost their egos. It's the pecking order. Chances are they are being bullied at home by a parent or an older sibling, and they take that out on kids that they think won't /can't defend themselves. You know the ones they know they could beat in a fight.......they never go after people their own size or someone that might put them in their place.

My boyz are 12 & 14 and both have been around knifes for years. they also have machete's in their collection. other the the oldest almost putting his eye out once ha ha I can't think of a time that they hurt themselves, each other or anyone else for that matter.

BB guns and Pellet guns are my boyz guns of choice..........Its not like their running around the neighborhood shooting everything that moves......................only birds and a occasional squirrel......oh they shot a Gopher once......then the cat ate it......

Now when it comes to bullies I don't like them.........Some of my kids have had to deal with a bully and to tell you the truth it was all I could do not to go and get in the farce of the bullies father.........Believe me I would want to know if one of my kids were picking on someone weaker then them........They know I wont stand for that......I tell my kids that if they stick up for someone being bullied that I would back them..........Our schools don't go far enough in protecting our kids from bullies but that another blog

Thanks for the support Countrygirl. I guess we could agree that sometimes the smart kids are also weak. But I was active in several sports (swimming, field hockey and baseball) so I don't think I was considered weak. Because I was put ahead several times during grade school, my classmates were 3 to 4 years older than me (depending on how many times they had been held back!!!!). Maybe being so much younger made me the target - but I was glad to have big brother waiting for me when I got out of school.

Oh, and I was also very tall for my age - got my full growth before 12 years old (5'7"). I was taller than most of the 16 year old boys that tormented me - gee I hate thinking back on those dumb punks. Yeah - they usually had pretty bad home lives - I guess I should feel sorry for them, But, HaHa ... I win ..... I got the education and the good job, married well, which means hubby is smart, handsome, educated and had (has) a good job.

I'm trying to imagine where Gube's little boyz are exactly, outside playing with knives and have guns in which to shoot birds. And apparently outlawed fireworks are OK too. I want to keep my grand daughter far-far away. Come to think of it, I think I want to stay away too. And those whoppings you received Gube - apparently didn't have much of a long term effect - because here you are expecting your boyz to behave badly. I'm trying to get over them killing birds ..... what is that all about?

I expect this type of response from someone that thinks soccer is a good sport to get your young one involved in.....AYSO SOCCER has screwed up more kids with their ''nobody is a looser everybody is a winner...we don't keep score crap. Its that type of sissy crap that is turning kids into girlie boy's that don't know what its like to really play outside.......Too many mothers and not enough fathers raising Boy nowadays is also a problem.......to many of you wimpy guys that can't stand up to their wives.......

Anyway I have good boyz and I am proud of them........ because I don't baby them doesn't mean I'm not teaching then right from wrong......It's just not YOUR idea of right and wrong...

Gube, I sure hope the birds you are talking about are quail or something and they are eating them after they shoot them! I grew up with 7 brothers.......I know all about boys. My brothers had BB guns, and bows and arrows, I think the knives ended with the Swiss Army knives, BUT they never shot anything they didn't intend to eat,( except for maybe a rattler or two) and the bows and arrows were only used on targets placed on hay bales. Killing birds just for the heck of it isn't sport, it is mutilating small animals and really isn't looked graciously on. I mean come on most serial killers started out mutilating small animals. I'm not saying your kids are potential serial killers, but you can see why that kind of behavior is looked down upon.

I'm curious how much involvement in sports you and your kids have had because your statement about AYSO is ridiculous. Yes, they start out with that "Nobody is a loser", "We don't keep score" attitude but we're talking about 5 and 6 year olds! You want to build them up before you break them down which comes later on with high school sports and even earlier these days. The mentality that winning is everything is what is ruining society. That's why you see athletes getting busted for illegal "boosters" all the time now, that's why young girls are starving themselves and getting plastic surgery at 16, and the list goes on and on.

I agree with you that kids don't play outside enough these days and I blame that on video games and the fact that parents are afraid to let their kids out of their sight anymore.

On another note....I really hope you do spend some quality time with your girls. A father figure is huge for girls.......you don't want them growing up trying to fill that void. You might end up a grand daddy sooner than you like. Oh, and your statement about wimpy men not standing up to their wives is laughable................but I'll end it there.

sunshine why do you have trouble imagining me as a father of 6........until a couple of years ago we had 8 kids living with us....................Yes we have a blended family but that doesn't matter because I consider all to be my kids.......We have good kids..none of them have really given us any problems......All my kids are healthy and none has lost any limbs as of yet.....lol

Believe me there are times that I look around our dinner table at all the little bastards and ask myself how in the world did I end up here???????

countygirl I coach soccer for a year or two years ago and hated it...........I have coached little league off and on for several years..........Until my kids no longer wanted to play sports........I have also coached t-ball a couple of times.......most of our kids are now grown.....My boyz are not interested in sports at this time.........In the future if they decide to play sports you can bet I'll be there to help out anyway I can.....

And how do you know your brothers never killed anything other then a snake??????

Ouch Babey, very Ouch!! I was raised in the country & all of us kids had some sort of a gun, supervision was far & few between. I doubt that type of lifestyle was indicative of the city kids, very different atmospheres. In today's world it's probably handled a bit different, if the kids show respect & responsibility w/ there activity of choice then I'm all for it. It truly lies in the character of the individual. Bullies suck, I always saw them pick on the less fortunate, or the dorks.

Who knows maybe my families experiences with sports was worse than most, but when me and my siblings played normally the coaches had a winning is everything attitude, not all the time ,but this usually rang true most of the time. It made playing ......work and that sucked. You play sports cause you love the game and of course you always want to do your best, but if you have an off day ripping you apart for it doesn't help. I applaud you for volunteering to coach that is great! What age group for soccer did you coach?

One of my friends lil' bro shot @ a bird & actually hit it. It fell to the ground w/ alarming speed. We all watched horrified as it's partner flew down & sat next to it's dead, limp body. Now, one can learn from this lesson, or not. I know Donny, the brother, who considered himself quite the Italian Stallion, sat there & cried. I believe we all learned a lesson that day. Last weak by Taco bell there was a poor lil' bird in the st. that had got hit, but not dead, it's poor partner kept flying over to help it. Sun. in Stallion the same scenario, but w/ a pancaked Mother squirrel, it's baby just sat there wondering what happened. Just about ruined my day, really. Now let me ask you, how many people have respect for the power of the automobile? Don't something like 80% of accidental deaths happen in the bathroom? unfortunately, sh#*t happens. We can only hope we've instilled our best, & lets not forget God is always watching.

For screwing kids up, Little League is the worst of all the youth sports. Ever notice that the kids stop playing it as soon as they get old enough to express an opinion? Really, a "youth" sports league where 90% of the kids drop out at age 12? What kind of youth activity is that? A year or two ago, Tehachapi didn't even have enough kids to even field a 14-15 year team.

That's a burn rate that really tells kids how valuable they are...don't get me started on that stupid league...good only for allowing adults to project their fantasies on children....

Countygirl I coach my kids in soccer when they were around 5 and 6......What I remember most was all the kids asking who won the game.....Only to smile and say everybody won........you are all winners.......I felt so stupid saying that because the kids knew who won and who lost.......I felt like i was lying to them. A kid would make a goal and after the game would ask how many points did I score? I was to lie to the kid and say none.....The kids are not stupid they knew who won and how man goals were scored......Not only are we lying to the young kids it also confuses them .........Oh and the parents were encourage not to cheer for their child too loud........When I grew up in Wyoming at that age there was no soccer..Only football, baseball and rodeo's. We played to win....loosing sucked....so we played harder next time we played............Life is competition.........

Storilori hit it on the head.......Country kids vs city kids.............In Ca all kids are city kids ..........They are taught that guns and hunting is wrong and how to hug a tree........

PD Little league in Tehachapi is very political......When I first managed a team 17 years ago it was much different, at least it seemed that way to me.When I coached a few years ago it was not fair....I coached minors and lower minors. There was a member of the board that also managed a team and he always had a ''stacked'' team. Teams in those divisions are supposed to be random pick.....But it never failed that the board member would have the best players on his team. The board member would walk around like he was a the coach of the year.......like because of his great coaching abilities his team always won.....They won because he stacked the team, The same team would have won with a gimp retarded blind man coaching them......

When I was 14 and 15 I lived in Wyoming and played Babe Ruth Baseball.....The town I lived in was the same size as Tehachapi and we had 8 teams in that league........

Boy, this "everyone wins" crap is just that, crap! I'd like to know who decided that was a good idea? I remember one of my coworkers telling me he took his kids out of sports (I don't remember which sport) because of this "everyone wins" garbage. I played a season each of basketball, baseball, and soccer when I was a kid and there wasn't any of that junk. I didn't continue because sports just aren't my thing, but it wouldn't have been very fun if we were all winners and there were no losers. My baseball team was bad, and I knew it, and it would have been a lie to tell us we're all winners. Even kids at that age know who the winners and losers are, then to tell them "you're all winners" is just damaging. What's happening to society?

I hug trees, and feed the birdies, quail included (my grand daughter loves them) don't mind the squirrels, deer, elk eating my pretty flowers. Would never think of killing any of them. Have be-headed a couple rattlers over the years. I was very brave. I keep a friendly relationship with our police officers so they know who I am and I know they patrol my area frequently.

And yes, I was also fully developed at 12. My mother used to say the same thing about "that's because they like you." I tried to tell her how mean it all was - hitting, nasty names, pushing my books out of my hands and then kicking them around on the ground. And - this is funny now - always comments about my mom's Studebaker. TeeHee - we considered ourselves pretty well-to-do because we had a second car - but it was a very run down Studebaker. I can't count the number of scarves and hats I lost because they would just pull them off my head and run away. So big brother just started walking me home - less than a mile. He was a about 6' and those punks just faded into the woodwork.

I survived very well - What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. But, even after 50 years, I can still feel the pain of being an outsider. It helped me become a very confident woman. Followed the lives of one of my tormentors and when he was arrested for vandalism at 22, I was satisfied and went forward.

And Gube - I blame the parents. These kids were taught that "boyz will be boyz" and tormenting the unpopular girl was cool. My brother went to visit the mom & dad and was met at the door by big beer belly redneck man and told to "f..... off."

No matter who I've talked to about Little League from other towns and other states, we come up with the same stories - forcing me to conclude that it isn't a local phenomon...the organization just attracts the same ritual-loving, over-egoed wanna-bes everywhere.

And which is it, guys? gube says the kids were asking him who won, while greg says the kids always know...Either way, why does the coach need to be stressing it? Sounds like the kids either know (in which case the coach doesn't need to say much) or they don't (in which case the coach doesn't need to say much).

And since when does life equal competition, gube? Maybe the parts that suck are...but certainly not the best parts. I'd expect anyone with 8 kids to understand that cooperation needs to rank high in the parthenon of Important Life Skill-Sets...

HOW CAN YOU WIN IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE SCORE? How can you reach down inside for that last bit, how can you learn to go the extra mile, if you don't know you need to? You would never know there's no traffic there. Lets keep in mind, we don't know these kids, as Lori has so monopolized every one of her troubles growing up, that everyone has got their story. If lessons would have been instilled early on, I would be out in my yard creating MY PATIO, not blogging about some circumstances that we're not even sure of. Didn't someones brother burn down a barn, Lori didn't your sister get badly burned? We learned from those unfortunate mistakes. If these boyz did do this, well, we don't know their story, & unfortunately their lesson cost us our Depot, I agree w/ (sorry, I can't recall your handle ) the man w/ the real pic. Slightly balding,dark hair, nice looking. We should rebuild it, we are a train town, build it, put the stuff in it, then we'll have a party!! This is so crazy fun& addicting!!

Come on they are 5 and 6 years old! My kids were in that division last year. If they asked how many goals they made I told them, but at that age you don't want to discourage them especially since it is just about learning the game at that point.......they don't even have practices. It's like a let's try this out and see if we like it sort of thing. My daughter will be in one league up this year, she'll have practices and I'm sure there will be scores kept. So 5 and 6 year olds...preschool and kindergartners need to be taught that winning is everything..........I don't think so.......besides it's one year! I'm sure that will ruin them alright.

I'm going to have to agree with PD and BD about Little League. Little League with 7 brothers was a huge part of our lives. We spent almost all day Sat. down at the park sometimes. Baseball was pretty much the sport of choice in my family. We're talking Little League, traveling teams, high school, and even Junior Olympics one year. lol My mom was a busy lady come baseball season.

Problem is Lori these "boyz" are NOT "boyz" at all! They were both in their 30's! Did you read the article in the paper (it's on here to.) There was a call earlier in the day about illegal fireworks activity....the police responded to it in that area......no one was to be seen. What does that tell you?? I'll tell you what it tells me. It tells me they KNEW they were doing something illegal and ran like hell when they saw the cops yet decided to do it again at a later hour! Also SOMEONE ELSE called the cops about the fire............NOT them.

What is with all this stuff about how remorseful they are and one has a family with kids and they are cooperating?? What is with the statement that they MIGHT be charged with a crime. It's like they feel sorry for them. Why haven't their names been released? Why hasn't an arrest been made if they know fireworks caused the fire and these guys were shooting off fireworks?? So what, we burn down buildings now and if we're sorry about it we can just walk away?? I don't know about anyone else, but I was really annoyed by that article.

PD, maybe the confusion comes into play when the kids think they know how many points were scored, but are being told it doesn't matter. Knowing how many points are scored then being told it doesn't matter are two conflicting ideas. When I played little league, no one had to tell me the score, but we also weren't being told that it doesn't matter. And while I wasn't always looking at the scoreboard, I certainly knew how we were doing during the game. I wanted to win because losing is a bummer. But losing helps one strive to be better. I wouldn't want to be on a winning team if every team was a winning team! What's the point?

Particlarly ironic for you to defend Little League, gube, given your generally anti-immigration sentiments. Have you failed to notice that native-born Americans don't play baseball anymore, and that Major League Baseball has esentially resorted to using a very well-paid Guest Worker program?

What - playing baseball is one of those jobs "Americans Won't Do"? Might make you think there's something wrong with the way we're going about developing talent...

Here's how they develop it in a country where they develop a lot more of it.... Not a uniform or umpire in sight!!

What about the coaches that only care about winning? They'll do everything they can to get that win even at the expense of a player. My brother was captain of his high school baseball team and their starting pitcher........he was good with tons of potential. Funny thing was he never graduated high school. Now tell me(you all know when baseball season starts and ends and I'm talking about going all the way to the championships so it's a bit longer)how was he able to play his whole season if he didn't have the grades to graduate? He loved the game and maybe if they had pulled him it would have motivated him to get his butt in gear, but why should you when everything is being handed to you on a silver platter and then when they are done with you they dump you with no chances of a scholarship. I don't totally blame the coaches. My brother and my parents IMO are also to blame, but let me tell you it's depressing to hear him talk about his glory days. He was offered so many opportunities to play after that and he screwed them up , but that is all on him, and I know he asks himself that "what if" question everyday. It's a crappy way to live your life.

PD little league baseball it self isn't bad.............Its some of the leadership and coaching that sucks......

Also i don't have a problem with so many foreigners playing pro ball......After all aren't they here legally.....I am not against immigration....

Countygirl when I coached we played to win but if we lost I never called them losers.......We would meet behind the dugout and I would Talk about the good parts of the game and tell them that loosing wasn't the end of the world and that we would get them next time.....Then I would give out a baseball to a player that deserved it........The ball did not always go to the best player....Sometimes a player that did not usually hit very well but smack one during the game would get the ball...........Several times I would ask the team who deserved the game ball and more then once the team would yell out for one of the not to good players that had a good game..........I had good kids on my teams.....1 is now a cop in bako. 2 are firemen. 1 works at save mart 2 work at the prison.......When these now adults see me around town they still call me coach......

If you like baseball, you like your kids to play it - and American kids don't. Hmmm....American adults DO play slow-pitch softball.... Lots of hitting, running and fielding - as opposed to Little League "baseball" where we get lots of "at bats" that go like this....(runner on first, nobody out)

1) Pitch to backstop - ball 1 - Runner goes to second base.

2) Pitch in dirt - ball 2 - Runner goes to third base, Catcher hoists himself in gear two sizes too big, retrieves ball, threatens to throw to third amid cries of "hold it!", "hold it!", from crowd and coaches.

3) Third base "coach" yelling out "make him throw you a good one" - just in case the batter thought he might be up there to swing the bat

4) nicely hittable ball, the batter lets go by - as ordered - Strike 1

5) Pitch in the dirt - ball 3 - the catcher lunges over, stops ball and then jumps up, holding the ball while the runner on third stutter steps 4 steps from bag, challenging him to throw

6) Pitch sails over catcher's head, runner from third breaks for home while pitcher hesitates, then remembers he's supposed to cover the plate and runs forward threatening collision with runner. Catcher throws off mask and pursues the ball boucing off the backstop.

7) Run scores, batter walks to first.

8) Repeat steps 1-7 until Mercy Rule ends inning and darkness ends game.

So what could be a fun game turns into an excrutiatingly bad session of "catch", while every other kid stands around getting a sunburn and bored and adults squat on 5-gallon buckets spitting sunflower seeds and fantasizing about how they could have made it to the bigs if only they'd only gotten a break in the day...

PD - I gotta agree with you on the catchers gear, but the pitching hasn't gotten that bad has it?? lol It's been awhile since I went to a LL game ,but come to think of it when I did go the pitching was pretty bad. I remember I asked my brother(who was on the team and a pitcher(different brother as last time..lol) why the coach didn't pull the kid and put him in for a bit. He gave me a scoff and said...."Because that is the coaches son!" Ahhhh, gotta love the game.

Wow PD, you obviously had some bad experiences. Too bad. I had a rather good time in little league, and it wasn't anything like you describe. I was an OK fielder, and I hit .300, and I was middle of the road talent wise. Ahhhh, those days gone by....... But it's alright, like Gube says, we're all winners! Love it!
