Wow how funny. I was about to blog this same thing. I was going to vote for Obama in this election, but the fact that he voted yes on this bill has changed my mind like no other action he could have taken. I think we just got a big peek behind the curtain and you just saw the kind of politician Obama is. Now I have no idea who to vote for. No way am I voting for McCain, because had he voted he would have voted Yes on this and he's just more of the same failed modern Republican party, but at least he was politically smart enough not to take a position. They all suck. I'm really disappointed and jaded in our government and what is termed leadership in this day and age.

I'm very much afraid history is going to look back and point at this as the beginning of the end of the United States of America. My kids will never know what this country used to be. The people in power have started cutting away swaths of the Constitution that up until recently limited their power without even a peep from the common folk. Benjamin Franklin would be ashamed to call himself an American today.

I heard this had passed. As a citizen, I am furious that my private information was handed over to government without a warrant. But, to play devil's advocate, if I was approached by my government and told that it was a time of national crisis and the rules of privacy were suspended and every moment awaiting a warrant gave terrorists a chance to execute another attack, would I have kept my files closed? I'm not sure. The nation was reeling. Both houses of Congress were opening the doors to abridge citizen rights (Patriot Act). When the street cop is pursuing a felony suspect your car can be "stolen" to aide the cop in the pursuit. I don't understand why the government didn't get the delayed FISA warrant. That would have solved the whole thing.

I am not happy that O'bama or 68 other Senators voted for this bill. I am still voting for Obama, because as a Senator you have to make decisions all the time. We look at one aspect of the bill, (telecommunications immunity) and say don't vote for it. Have we read the completel bill in its entirety? There might be other aspects that are beneficial to us as a Nation.

I think this may be challenged in the Supreme Court which makes the election of a Liberal leaning President even more important.

Many of the left leaning judges are ready for retirement.

The alternative is McCain. An individual who has stated that if there is earmarks in a bill he will veto the legislation. And a man who thinks diplomacy is pulling out your guns and threatening other countries to do it are way or else.

Just to reitterate my point, Obama is running for President. If it comes up in a debate that Obama will be soft on terrorism he can now say that he voted for a Bill that "helps protect Americans from another terrorist attack." Somehting that John McCain can't say. Look at the "Nays" all Democrats and one Independent. Obama is running on a ticket that's trying to end the divisive nature of politics. Republicans are trying to paint him as the "most liberal Senator." By demonstrating Bi-Partisanship with his vote, Obama is doing the smart thing. He knows this Bill is going to get Challenged in the Supreme Court, he knew it was going to pass regardless of his ONE vote. He's hoping that you are intelligent enough to look beyond this one vote, look at the bigger picture, vote him into office and he can appoint judges that can ultimately overturn this policy. THINK Scottso, be smart and don't let your emotions dictate your ability to look at the bigger picture and what's at stake.

No Obama isn't fooling anybody. Read his books, look at his voting record, and look what he's accomplished. That's what I'm voting for. To be a politician Starbucks, you have to play the game. Especially when you're a candidate for President. Starbucks, Obama doesn't flip on EVERY issue....By the way our kids should learn how to speak spanish. Kids who demonstrate the ability to speak mulitple languages are typically more intelligent, so I don't see that as a bad thing. And as for immigrants being mandated to speak english, it's a free country right? They should be able to speak any language they want right? Speaking English would be benificial to them obviously. Oh yeah, if you go to Mexico's highly populated tourist spots, you'll come across a large number of Mexicans who speak english and there are signs in English.

I read earlier that you told her the same thing regarding the "Soup Nazi" and I was curious, but let it go. Anyway.....My take on this is the Government already has way too much control over our lives. They've got us pretty much screwed into a corner that even if we wanted to stand up and protest as a nation.... how many of us could actually afford to do something like that?

Sorry Starbucks.....as Bigdog says..I'm fairly "politcally illiterate"...however...my take on this, the gas prices, the whole economy, is how do we, as a nation fight back? I can't bring myself to vote McCain, he just looks like another Bush to me. Obama...the whole story coming out about his preacher pretty much turned me off to him. Hillary is gone.....not sure we were ready for a woman yet. The reason I say that is I'm afraid, every nasty person would turn it into a "oh she's a woman thing" , or "look at her husband" She would be ripped to shreds. Some nut job would eventually take her out.

I don't think FISA needed to be reinvented or we needed the Patriot Act in the first place. There is something we can all do: Vote, then hold our politicians accountable. How do we do that? Pay attention to what your government (State, Local, and Federal) are working on. Write them let them know how you think they should vote, they are your proxy after all. If they don't vote with you a majority of the time, and they don't share the same view point, help their opponent get elected next time. Volunteer to work on the campaign, get involved. There is only one way we can get the Government to be more responsible, participate.

I bet more people could name who the four final contestants are on The American Idol then the candidates for the Democratic and republican parties this year for President's.

It takes us getting involved. Olivia if you want your kids to have the same opportunities we had, get involved. If it bothers you that the school board fired a superintendent and hired a new one, effectively putting the School District on the hook for two salaries for one position, get involved and find out what you can do to elect different members.

If it bothers you that Tehachapi City Council is too worried about infighting and not looking at growth in a responsible way, then work to encourage folks to run, and elect members who support your views.

If you are bothered that the Kern County Supervisors spent three million dollars trying to recoup 200,000 in OT, he authorized vote them out and lets get new blood in office.

But it involves educating yourself on issues, candidates positions, and becoming involved. If you choose to take this route, I encourage everyone to get their kids involved so they can see how important it is to be involved, and they can see that it is possible to make a difference.

Well Vader, if you want to vote for the guy that says one thing and does another then you go ahead. I am not a democrat, never have been, and I really don't care what brings your party down. I vote for the person. I am not going to vote for any person that will so blatantly sell my freedoms and liberties for political or monetary gain. Being able to say he is tough on terror is the most laughably apologetic reason I have ever heard for completely removing accountability and judicial oversight. And my opinion IS based on his "record." His record now includes voting yes to a bill that (inarguably I might add) tramples all over the Constitution of the United States, gives retroactive immunity to a bunch of corporations that acted COMPLETELY ILLEGALLY, and removes any ability for any branch of the government or any civilian to investigate past or future wiretapping practices for their legality! And this last fact just so happens to automatically determine the winners and losers in currently ongoing court trials of said companies. How convenient.

The "its just politics and they have to play the game" line if thinking are how republics turn into dictatorial regimes and empires. Senators and more importantly Presidents not only have to make decisions, they have to have the guts to make the right one. A NO vote on this bill was the right answer. Its that simple. I think it far more likely that he voted yes because he knows if he wins the general election, this bill gives him a LOT more power. And if it finally gets struck down by the judicial branch it only moreso points out how wrong it was. But I have no doubt the response around here will be more like, "See? It's ok because it was struck down."

By the way, for those of you unaware, the Constitution does not grant any rights to citizens at all. Its entire purpose is to explicitly state what the government is allowed to do. Its only purpose is to limit the power of the government over the people. The rights we have are inherent. I really don't see anything going on today that is any worse than what went on for the thousands of years before our founding fathers drafted up the Constitution that warrants giving up any of our rights and giving the government yet more power.

Perhaps you should stop questioning my intelligence and worry about your own line of thinking Vader. If everyone voted the best candidate instead of blind devotion to their parties we wouldn't have a two party system, there would be "no wasted votes" , and politicians would actually have to worry about governing for the people instead of themselves.

And, by the way Vader, I really have to question YOUR intelligence if you are buying into the "just trust me" thing from a politician. ;)

And you are correct....I had to ask Bigdog who else was running besides Obama and McCain. I don't watch the news or read newspapers. I do however know that the two Davids, Sayesha, and Jason Castro were the top 4 on American Idol. You are right. That is a sad state of affairs. I'll have to remind myself to read/watch more news, and start educating myself.

If you listen to any of Reverend Wrights comments in their entirety then you'd understand that his criticism of the United States had nothing to do with Black or White. Or his mocking of Hillary Clinton had anything to do with Black or White. What he said was controversial, what he said was divisive, but it wasn't radical. What he said wasn't very different from what other pastors have said. Reverend Wright has been on the forefront of a lot of positive issues in this country that crossed racial and gender boundaries. Enough so that he was revered by a number of politicians, black, white, male, and female that included the Clinton's. And now you want to judge him and make a choice on a presidential candidate based on you tube soundbites is stupid. Is that insulting? No, it's the truth.

I have to look at the big picture. This is a pivotal year for the US. I can't let a few differences of opinion sway me from the candidate I know will take us on a different course than Bush has chosen for us. No politician is going to agree with me 100% of the time.

Obama was right about Iraq, back when it was practically political suicide to speak out against the invasion. He's still fighting the "unpatriotic" charge about that today.

There's always going to be a percentage of folks who'll believe anything. I've heard radio callers accuse Obama of being the anti-Christ, and they were totally serious. There's certainly a group of people who will never accept Obama's Christianity, or believe how a person can separate their faith from the rhetoric. So what? There's always going to some people who believe we faked the Moon landings. Doesn't change the fact there's a little mirror on the Moon, put there by a man's hands.

Obama is handling most everything just fine, so far. He & his wonderful family know who they are, and one of those things is: Obama is a candidate running for president. Imagine the horrors, a politician running for office! How did he ever turn so far away from his roots, as a political organizer learning the ropes in Chicago, of all places! Why, they hardly know anything about the art of Politics in Illinois! What were they thinking?!?

oohchild, do you think your image of Obama has anything to do with most of the media embracing him and treating him so favourably?, Hillary even joked about that in their debates, and saturday night live has had a field day with the media saying only good things about Obama, so, in turn, when people only hear good things about a person, they have a good image of them, thats the differance here, I personally would like to see Obama elected, so a whole generation of young people will see, how he is just the same as other politicians, but the media will only report good news about the country, thus making everybody feel better,thinking it is because of him, just like they relish in only reporting bad news now, he has already changed his view on Iraq, which has the left wing crowd fuming, we will be in Iraq for a long time just like Korea and Germany, as a security force because the people want us there.the left better get used to it.

I didn't realize, "being the dope I am", that my feelings were hurt over what some stupid pastor said. We all know what the pastor said....(I didn't hear or see it on you tube thank you). My sense of what kind of pastor would say stuff like that, and who would support him had me questioning whether or not this was the right man.

And I agree with Starbucks, why would a presidential candidate encourage all kids to learn spanish? What need is there in America to learn Spanish. We are an English speaking country. I think we all know why he is encouraging this, he doesn't intend to do much for the illegal immigration problem. I understand that Spanish will get you further in California, Texas or other bordering states career wise. However, why doesn't he encourage them to learn any other foreign language? I encouraged my kids to take foreign language, they chose to take 3 years of French. Not much need for it here in the good ol USA. Why didn't he state that all kids should learn English. I think that would be a more useful language here to focus on.

Starbucks, where do I begin? Your "spray & pray something sticks" style of discussion makes it very difficult to focus, but here goes:

My "image" of Obama certainly does come from the media, but you contradicted yourself when you claim only good stuff is presented about Obama & then point out all the negative reporting going on now. Tell me, is the media "whitewashing" Obama's image, or are they jumping on the "flip-flop" train? See, I can actually look to many varied media sources for my picture of the man & his family. My "image" comes from more than soundbites regurgitated by O'Reilly & Hannity and their ilk.

SNL also had a field day with President Ford's physical challenges, but that didn't mean Ford was a klutz. Far from it. Just because comedy shows focus on the funny doesn't mean their fans aren't discerning enough to understand satire. SNL's send ups of Clinton didn't hurt his campaigns a bit.

Finally, I'm not surprised you won't understand the nuanced positions our country must adopt in both Iraq & Afghanistan. More than a few sentences tax the brain, it seems. I, for one, would appreciate a president who understands the need for an end game & can actually develop one, based on what commanders on the ground know at the time. The Iraqis want us out, but you know better. Imperialist much, Starbucks?

oohchild, where do I begin?, first of all, its not spray and pray, if I threw out to many issues for you, just take them one at a time, I think the country needs to move on from Bush, and Obama is fine, but he is still a politician, and will flip flop on any issue if he thinks it will help him get elected, and the media loves him, ever listen to Chris Mathews talk about him?, Obama give him a "thrill up his leg", remember that?, they ,MSNBC, report only the good, anyway, hes already changed his mind on leaving Iraq, he said he will listen to the commanders on the ground,then decide what to do, uh, isnt that what were doing now?, isnt that why Bush sent in the surge?, so, get ready for more mind changes, and we have an end game in Iraq, it will be based on what Gen Petreus says in his briefings, I think troops will begin leaving this year, I hope so anyway.

I would recommend if you want to get informed on a candidate's views rather than rely on sound bite news you go to the source. I know Obama put out a paper to his supporters on why he was going to vote for FISA. As a person who has actually spent time reading some of the legislation that is passed by Congress, there are often times good and bad included in every bill. Saying that Barrack Obama or John McCain voted for/ or against legislation that allowed something Americans find offensive is dumbing issues down to the lowest common denominator. There may have been 100 positive things that benefited American and the one negative thing. How would you vote?

Barack Obama said from the get go that he did not want to make this about race. Yet when his pastor's comments were taken out of an hour long sermon, and looped and replayed on the news, Barack Obama did not shirk from it. In fact, he gave a speech that should be required reading for every student in American History or American Government. But he was held accountable for his preacher's remarks because he attended the church for 20 years. He didn't dumb it down for America. He didn't pretend that everything is great in America either. He challenged America to heal a sore that has been around since this country was founded. His response was elegant and Presidential.

Yet John McCain actively seeks the endorsement of two pastor's who are on record of saying Hitler was sent to hunt the Jews by god and that Katrina happened to New Orleans because of all the sin that occurs in that town, and is allowed to get away with " like all the good things about them and disassociate with all the negative things," for over a month before he finally renounced their endorsements. Of course, it was alright for the white pastor's to say these things because they were "just using the Bible to explain things that have and are happening in the world."
