http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/Sharonc/19418 The Tehachapi Humane Society again became involved in a situation that is all too common these days.  Apparently a lady was renting a house in the city and collected cats (and I don't mean ceramic!).  She moved taking about nine of her felines with her, but leaving quite a few behind (one with kittens).  The owner of the property didn't want to be bothered, so opened the door and allowed the cats to escape.   Now the problem becomes the neighborhood's.  Concerned neighbors have been putting food out for them and at some point we were called to see if we could help. We are now going to enlist the help of neighbors and try to trap these cats and find a place for them or turn them over to  Animal Control in Mojave where they will be euthanized .  My point is...it is much more difficult to trap a cat out in the open that to capture a cat that is in an enclosed house or room.   By allowing the animals to escape there is a good chance we will not get all of them so now the neighborhood will have the problem of them multiplying.  Also, in the course of trapping we will have to worry about possibly trapping someone else's pet.  How much easier things would be if the owner/manager of the rental had been responsible enough to have made an effort to capture the cats and taken them to the shelter to begin with instead of hoping the problem will go away.  Believe me...it doesn't. I have neutered/spayed all of them so they will not reproduce and they are all fat with good food and love. I have a couple "barn" cats outside that have adopted me and I feed them too they kill my mice and I give them food and shelter I say that’s a good arrangement.   I’m glad I live on acreage because in the city I couldn't take care of them and it breaks my heart that people are so careless about their animals. However, I do wish there was more incentive to spay/neuter around here it only cost me 25.00 for a neuter of a cat where I use to live and here its 55.00; which is outrageous considering if the cost were minimal maybe we wouldn't be euthanizing so many animals each year. I was able to get a voucher from the humane society and the cost ended up being only 25.00 but you have to jump through hoops to get them and there isn't much public knowledge of these vouchers.
