A few months back my husband and I saw a black bear, not nearly as large, around the same area on the side of the road that had been hit by a car/truck. Has anyone else had any bear sightings?

I saw that on the way to Bakersfield Saturday! I was like, "Whoa, was that a cow or something?" And my husband said, "It was a bear!" I didn't even know we had bears here (duh, Bear Mtn...). Is it strange for a bear to get hit? My old truck had a tweaked chassis because the previous driver had hit a moose. And a few weeks ago I saw a really large cat that had gotten hit. That seemed weird too. I saw something on tv about freeways being built across migration routes and that they are particularly devestating to bears- can't diversify the gene pools or something. Whenever we walk in the moutains, we bring the dogs along. They make enough noise that they should scare away any wild animals.

Apr 7, 2008 at 04:04 AM : What get me about...

What get me about this bear is that it was a brown bear and I have never seen a brown bear in Tehachapi before. If many of you didn't know, brown bears are also call gruzzy bears and as far as my research went on this subject they have not been in this area for over 100 years.
Madkow,
If the big cat you saw was the same one I saw a few weeks back, it was a bobcat. Mean little devils but very beautiful cats.

I did a little more research and must correct myself before some one else does. A gruzzy is a subspecies of the brown bear species. So while the brown bear that got killed was a rarity, it was not a gruzzy but a close cousin.

Yes Gube your right, Black Bears come in many colors. There is a very large 'light tan' colored black bear that lives just North East of town. I have seen many black bear in this area, and most are not black.

Here is a photo of a small cat killed by a car on Hwy 58 last year.
