Tehachapi Community Theatre has put together a committee to plan this black-tie event to be held in their new home, The Beekay Theatre. Committee chair and board member Cindy Latham says that nothing has been set in stone yet as new ideas have been presented but more details will be forth coming, such as ticket prices and who will be catering the event.

"We (the committee) have decided on a theme; since the theatre was built in the mid-30's, we'll be going with a 1930-40's look and music which will really compliment the Art-Deco design of the BeeKay." Other than that, Latham says we'll have to "wait and see" what TCT members have planned for the Gala.

Opening Weekend for TCT's Sweeney Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Tehachapi Community Theatre (TCT) will present C.G. Bond's version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, directed by David Reed and Michael Gossage.

“It's quite an unusual play,” noted Reed. “This version is a real melodrama, not a comic lampoon, and thus takes us on a rollercoaster ride of thrills and adventures.”

Since Sweeney Todd's inception as an 1847 melodrama by George Dibdin-Pitt there have been at least six versions including Steven Sondheims's musical which has enjoyed many New York and touring productions and a very successful movie release. Dibdin-Pitt's play, not entirely original was based on tales found in a “penny dreadful,” a sensational news sheet with descriptions of depravity, violence, and grotesque murder.

Playing the revenge filled barber is Alex Zonn, last seen as Scrooge in TCT's A Christmas Carol. Opposite Zonn and making her TCT debut, will be Janice Boudurant as the wicked Mrs. Lovett and Karl Schuck as the dastardly Judge Turpen, with Jonathan Hall as Turpen's accomplice, The Beadle. Jackie Lawlor, a long time actor with TCT and audience favorite, takes a scene stealing turn as a mad housekeeper.

This production brings many new faces to the TCT stage, Korye Rodriguez and Cheyenne Harris, playing the love interests, Nick Roberts as a boy caught up in the mayhem, Spence Frederick, last seen in THS's Much Ado About Nothing, and Heather Ringle as a mysterious beggar woman. Bringing the production together are a large number of performers doing duty in a variety of scenes, among them are: Monica Nadon, Mary Roberts William Destefani, Cynthia Hynes, Cambria Hynes, Gwadlys Peterson, Noah Gossage, Shiloh Beazel, Vanessa Beazel, Berlyn Gonsalves, Royce Cox, Andrew Bartels, and Amanda Duke.

Tickets are available now at The Apple Shed, Old Towne Nursery, Johnny's Take'n Bake, and Tehachapi Art Center. Admission is $9 in advance and $12 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. with a 7:30 showtime at Jacobsen Middle School, 711 Anita Dr., on June 20, 21,27, and 28. This production contains mature themes. Encore Presentation!

Tehachapi Community Theatre will present two showings of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues on November 17th and 18th. The showing on Saturday the 17th will be at The Corral, Stallion Springs' new Community Center at 7pm doors will open at 6:30. Mama Hillybean's Coffee & Community will host the show on Sunday the 18th. Doors will open at 5:00 for a no host dinner* with the show starting at 6:30.

TCT's Annette Kirby has announced plans for Eve Ensler’s moving play about women, The Vagina Monologues, opening on Sept 29.

Kirby is gathering a variety of women to perform the show, so the cast will vary from venue to venue. The first performance will be at Mel White’s Tehachapi Art Center, in benefit of Alliance Against Family Violence & Sexual Assault in Bakersfield, in observation of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Jeri Parr, the Outreach Administrator for AAFVSA is delighted that TCT will be kicking off their October campaign.

"When Jeri and I spoke, I was truly amazed and touched at how far this organization goes. A rape victim is not only accompanied to the hospital, but is also provided with a set of clean clothes, a towel and a complete set of toiletries." Kirby went on to say, "Victims of domestic violence are housed in the shelter up to 45 days and sometimes even helped to escape from the area." The AAFVSA has served over 600 women and children this year alone.

Tehachapi Art Center and Mama Hillybean's Coffee & Community will have a receptacle placed to collect items for the shelter. Kirby is encouraging other businesses and groups to participate by collecting for the shelter. To join in leave a message at TCT’s Hotline 822-4037.

Many in this community are aware that TCT is in desparate need of a new home. As of March 31, 2007 TCT's stock of comtumes, props and stage will be packed away until a new facility is found.

Tehachapi Community Theatre is in it's 39th season with the last two shows, "Nuts" and "Catfish Moon" being put on hold. "The Adventures of Robin Hood", with an all childrens cast,ages 8 -18 directed by Monica Nadon, will be the last show to hit the boards at TCT's Studio Theatre. "Adventures...." opens March 16th running two weekends with Sunday Family Matinees.

New Home Needed For TCT

Hits the Road in Search of a New Home

After three-and-a-half years in its current location, Tehachapi Community Theatre (TCT) will be moving on. TCT needs room to grow to expand its educational programs and to continue providing quality productions. Therefore, the Board of Directors and the membership have agreed to vacate its current premises by March 31, 2007.

TCT has already formed a building committee to look for a new location in which to continue bringing quality theatre and entertainment to its loyal patrons and all residents of the greater Tehachapi area.

“While we’ve enjoyed having a place to call home and work our craft, the current space no longer meets our needs,” said President Karl Schuck. “TCT consistently has three shows in different stages of production at any given time. With the growth of our educational programs, the addition of TCT Jr. and the need for more rehearsal space, committing to a year’s lease with a substantial increase in rent, doesn’t make financial sense for this non-profit organization.”

Many audience members have enjoyed the intimacy of the space TCT has been performing in as it allows the audience to feel an immediacy with the performances. “I love the fact that our seating is only five rows deep,” said past President, David Reed. “The closeness of the performers to the audience members has made for a very unique experience for our patrons.”

In the last year-and-a-half alone, TCT has produced “The War of the Worlds,” “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Alice In Reality Land,” “Love Letters,” “My Three Angels,” “Rocket Man,” “On Golden Pond,” “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” “6 Rms Riv Vu,” “Little Women,” “A Christmas Carol” and “Private Lives”. In addition, audiences have enjoyed TCT’s Improv Troupe, “Comedy Under Construction” and Alex Zonn’s Hypnotist Show featuring Gary Mazzola and Friends as the opening musical act.

A recent addition has been the TCT Jr. classes taught by Monica Nadon as well as the plans for TCT to produce at least one children’s show per year. “The children have enjoyed the classes; Acting for the Theatre, Improvisation and Film Acting,” said Monica Nadon. “The need for children’s theatre was evident by the forty-eight young actors who auditioned for the TCT Jr. production of “The Adventures of Robin Hood.”

“The Adventures of Robin Hood” will be TCT’s last production in its current location. Performances will be held on Friday and Saturday nights, March 16, 17, 23 & 24 at 7:45 p.m. and on Sunday afternoons as a matinee on March 18 & 25 at 2:30 p.m.

“Rehearsals for “The Adventures of Robin Hood” are going very well. The young actors are so talented and they’re having such a good time,” stated director Monica Nadon.

Due to TCT’s imminent move, the pending productions of “Nuts” and “Catfish Moon” will be put on hold until such time as TCT can find another venue. In the meantime, the Board of Directors and the membership are thinking outside the box to find ways to continue to perform. Shakespeare in the park may be one option while Improv can be performed in almost any venue.

Casting Call for Catfish Moon

Tehachapi Community Theatre will be holding open auditions Laddy Sartin’s poignant comedy Catfish Moon, directed by Kenny Chugg. This will be Mr. Chugg’s first time in TCT’s director, though he has years of previous experience with other community theatres before moving to Tehachapi.

The old fishing pier out on the end of Cypress Lake has just fallen under the magic of another Catfish Moon. It was the favorite hangout for three best friends when they were kids; skipping school, skinny dipping, and even experiencing the mysteries of kissing girls. Now Curley, Gordon, and Frog are older, and they have tasted the bitterness of life as well as the sweetness, and the pressures and problems that come with middle age have eroded the closeness between Frog and Gordon. The final straw comes when Frog discovers that Gordon is dating his ex-wife. Curley, the "big brother" of the bunch, in an attempt to recapture the friendship and settle all disputes, convinces Frog and Gordon to go on an overnight fishing trip like old times. On the pier, the weight of adulthood is lifted by laughter and their love of fishing, and the three guys discover that their friendship was never really lost.

Auditions will be held at TCT Studio Theatre located at 48771 Valley Blvd. (TAPA Dance Studio) on Saturday February 24 at 2:00 pm and on Tuesday February 27 at 6:30 pm. Performances are scheduled for May 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 2007. Mr. Chugg is looking for three men 40 - 50 years of age to play best friends from childhood, Curly, Frog, and Gordon. In this manly mix there is a part for one woman age 35 - 45.

AUDITIONS FOR "NUTS" 01/22/07

Just a reminder to everyone that Annette Kirby will be holding auditions for the April 2007 production of Nuts. Auditions will be held at TCT's Studio Theatre located at 48771 Valley Blvd. on Monday January 22nd at 6:30 pm. This is an adult drama (with a touch of humor here and there).

Ms. Kirby also needs an Assitant Director/Stage Manager to help with blocking and taking notes, a Costumer, a Property Person, Light and Sound Tech and Set Constuction and Decor. Nuts has a very simple set, costume plot, property list, lights, and sound...perfect for someone who wants to try something new.

Auditions This Weekend!

Tehachapi Community Theatre announces auditions for Tom Topor’s Broadway hit, Nuts. Auditions will be held at TCT’s Studio Theatre, located in the TAPA building at 48771 Valley Blvd. Saturday, January 20 from 2pm - 4pm and Monday, January 22 at 6:30pm. Directed by Annette Kirby this show starts rehearsals immediately and will hit the boards in April 2007. Ms. Kirby wants all who audition to be aware that this production has strong adult language and content.

Nuts has been called the best courtroom melodrama since Witness for the Prosecution and The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. Set in a courtroom in New York's Bellevue Hospital, the story concerns an incarcerated woman's valiant attempt to fight those who want to have her committed as mentally incompetent to stand trial on a manslaughter charge. The State, represented by a court appointed psychiatrist and an aggressive prosecutor, say Claudia Faith Draper is nuts.

"Nuts hast he audience rooting for the good guys and hating the bad guys, as if the whole event was the most beautifully professional wrestling match you have ever seen. Nuts is a play that moves you ... you are in court watching a woman fight for what she believes is her total future." N.Y. Post. .

Ms. Kirby is looking for six males ranging in age from mid-20’s and up, and three females, ages 30 and up. As with any production, plenty of behind the scenes help is always needed and appreciated. Needed for this production are an Assistant Director/Stage Manager to help with blocking and takes notes, a costumer, a props person and various stage hands for set construction and decor.
