animals.  Besides all the hustle and bustle going on, there will be a lot of excess noise which can really reek havoc with our pets.  They are not use to the loud bangs and pops that occur during the various celebrations throughout the area and most of the time their first reaction will be to run. </span></span></p> <ul> <li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Be sure to have some type of I.D. on your pets (even if it’s a temporary piece of tape with your phone number written on it taped to their collars).</span></span></li> <li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Take precautions and place your dog or cat in a safe room where there will be less noise and their ability to take off is not as high.</span></span></li> <li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Check on their well-being frequently if you have a party going on.</span></span></li> <li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">If you don’t put them in a safe room and want them with the family, keep them on their leash if possible.</span></span></li> <li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Watch them carefully around the new people visiting your home (children in particular).  A normally friendly dog can become stressed in all the commotion and may snap at a stranger (especially if they get stepped on in the crowd).</span></span></li> <li><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Leave your dog at home if you are going to celebrations at parks etc.  The heat can be very uncomfortable for your dog the </span></span><st1:place><st1:city><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;">Bakersfield</span></span></st1:city><st1:state><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;"> California</span></span></st1:state></st1:place><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;"> today on overpopulation of cats and dogs I felt they were on target.  Tehachapi Humane Society strongly supports the spaying and neutering of companion animals and also works towards spaying and neutering its feral cat populace.  We feel spaying and neutering should play the largest role in solving the overpopulation problem <b style="">NOT</b> euthanizing the animals.  </span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;">I do feel their articles were a little short on the locale.  The article sounded as if the problem exists only in </span></span><st1:city><st1:place><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;">Bakersfield</span></span></st1:place></st1:city><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;">, yet this is a <b style="">county-wide</b> problem when it comes to </span></span><st1:place><st1:placename><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;">Kern </span></span></st1:placename><st1:placetype><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;">County</span></span></st1:placetype></st1:place><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;">.  A comment was made at some point in the article that there could be 4,000 spay/neuter surgeries done per year.  I believe it should and could be more since Tehachapi Humane Society was instrumental in getting 864 animals spayed and neutered in 2007…if we can do that many, just think what could be done if the County and the veterinarians in Kern County truly worked on getting a low-cost spay/neuter program started.</span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><o:p></o:p><span style="font-family: Comic Sans MS;"><span style="font-size: larger;">As much as we appreciate the availability of Hope coming back into the picture with their much needed low-cost program, it’s very disheartening to think that as large of a county that Kern is, we have to go to Fresno County to get the much needed respite in costs for these surgeries. participated this year in our Annual Rummage Sale.  I don't know everyone by name to thank them individually so will tell all just how much time effort and work went into it to make it a great fundraiser!</font></div> <div> </div> <div><font size="2" face="Arial">Throughout the time we were gearing up for this day Peggy Mikkelsen, our chairperson for this event made many, many trips to the storage unit that <strong>Tehachapi Mini Storage</strong> donated to us. She also arranged for a truck from <strong>BSE</strong> so we could have a U-haul truck to deliver all the stuff to the site.  I'm sure her husband Mik felt the strain too.  I know this past week, I've made at least 6 trips taking stuff or meeting people there so they could unload their donations.  </font></div> <div> </div> <div><font size="2" face="Arial">We had a drop off day, that was really helpful to all.  So helpful that we absolutely filled to the brim our storage room and the lady who runs the office came out and asked if we were full.  I said yes and that I didn't know where we were going to put the rest of the stuff and she volunteered an additional storage unit one door down!  Talk about great community involvement!  <strong>Tehachapi Mini Storage</strong> really came through for us.  Betty Penley had made a number of trips out there too until the first unit was full then the lock we had to the second one only had 2 keys so Peggy and I were elected from then on.  Betty didn't quit though!  Her car seemed to always be full of something.</font></div> <div> </div> <div><font size="2" face="Arial">We had two gentlemen (Troy and Ernie) helping load the truck on Thursday, then they were gluttons for punishment and came back today to help unload, display and sell.  We were so lucky that one of these guys did moving and storage because he had that truck filled with no room to spare!  You guys were really workaholics!</font></div> <div> </div> <div><font size="2" face="Arial">We had other bodies there too to help, Barbara Zupan, Lynn Wolfe, Neide Franzen actually got up early two days to help loading with the truck and working the Rummage Sale!  Joanne Huckins was helping both days and she just recently had surgery!  Iris Lehr was there both times, Luci Veith worked the Rummage Sale as did Paula Podorski (she is really good at selling and pulling the heart strings for extra donations).  Theresa McClain was there keeping the money straight, selling raffle tickets etc.</font></div> <div> </div> <div><font size="2" face="Arial">The person we can't forget is <strong>Dr. Warsaw, of Alpine Medical</strong>.  This gentleman is truly a God send to us.  He allows us the use of his parking lot, opens the doors to his office, puts the coffee on for us, brings tables for our use, sets them up and helps unload.  I even saw him putting a big sign up for us.  He was constantly taking people in to his office area to see if electrical items worked.  He was there all day and always had a smile and a gentle look on his face.  Then he buys stuff too!</font></div> <div> </div> <div><font size="2" face="Arial">There were a lot of businesses that should be thanked as well...they allowed us to display our posters telling about the sale, handed out fliers and such so the word got out.  People who donated and the people who came and bought are to be commended as well.  </font><font size="2" face="Arial">Know that your donations keep on giving.  What we weren't able to sell by closing time for us went to <b>Help and Hope</b> to continue with the giving.</font></div> <div> </div> <div><font size="2" face="Arial">I know I've probably forgotten some people, and if I did...I'm truly sorry.  I recognize faces, but so many times I don't know the names that go with them.  To all, a great big thank you for another successful fundraiser!</font></div>
