Oh my!!! How dramatic are you? The administrators weren't "voted out". They resigned. We have one retired doctor (who is an absolute Gem) and 3 practicing doctors on our board of directors. I must say I was skeptical at first, but as time has gone by, .....they aren't crazy like you have made it sound. As with any hospital across the whole country and anywhere else imaginable, there are going to be unhappy folks. I think maybe you are one of them. : (
I would think people in the community would support our hospital. They are here to provide a much needed service and to help people. I don't see anything wrong with that.
I'm sorry if you had a bad experience. I'm sure there are many who could counter your bad with good. Try to stay positive.

Washburn your taking out your ass. Who the hell are you anyway. I can only guess who you really are. So tell us what was your last visit like. What exactly happened to you that turned you so sour and scared and whinny. I have always had good service and the hospital staff has always been great. You my friend has got a major resentment and that's your problem. The way you worded your post tells me you have no idea what you are talking about.

Feb 19, 2008 at 07:02 PM : Thank you Benevolence...

Thank you Benevolence for your kind words, appreciation and support. In our small community, in order for our hospital to flourish, we need all the words of encouragment and support from people like you. Unfortunately, people will have bad experiences. Misdiagnosis for instance can happen. I wouldn't think people would see as intentional. Rudeness on the other hand intentional or not should be reported every single time. A busy workload is not permission to be rude. As most everyone knows, I work at the hospital and I'm very proud of the staff I work with. I look forward to the growth and the promise that a new hospital will bring. If anyone is looking for perfection......I'm not sure of what direction to point you in.
Our numbers at the hospital are getting larger and larger. It has become quite a busy place. It's hard to staff accordingly. Some days you can get right in, other times there will be a 5 - 6 hour wait. There is a reason for it. Trust me. Please know this, when you come into the hospital, we will sign you in and I guarantee, the longest you will wait is 15 to 20 minutes to see a triage nurse. (and that is rare). At that time you can ask her/him questions and make your decision whether or not you'd like to wait it out. The admitting staff is excellent in keeping you informed as much as possible. There are laws we have to abide by for HIPPA and Privacy issues. So I hope that is understood.
I would also like to take this time to come to the defense of a wonderful doctor we have in our Emergency Room. I'm not sure how long he has been there. I think forever. He is a quiet, reserved man and can come across as ....maybe, detached. For anyone who doubts his ability because of his personality, please think twice. If you come in when Dr Barrozo is on, I assure you that you are getting quality care. Mistakes happen with all Doctors. ALL OF THEM. It's called Medical Practice for a reason.
I love our hospital and I support it 100%. Thank you for letting me share.

Feb 19, 2008 at 07:02 PM : I was in the ER very...

I was in the ER very recently and it was very crowded, so we weren't surprised that we waited about 5 hours. Normally it is very quick, but there were so many people and we weren't very high in priority with triage. We had tried to see our regular doctor earlier but they refused to see us... not the first time we weren't able to see our doctor and ended up in the ER (we're probably switching doctors now- not making room when my son had an ear infection a month ago was no good).
Once we were seen at the hospital, the doctor and nurses were wonderful. I've never had any complaints about them. This was the third time we had seen Dr. Barozzo and we've always received excellent care. The doctor that saw my son about a month ago was wonderful too- I wish I could remember his name.
From what I've heard, this nasty flu going around is really swamping all the hospitals. I just got over it this weekend myself, and I'm still wiped out from it.

Feb 20, 2008 at 05:02 AM : The lack of knowledge...

The lack of knowledge in knowing the difference between the Administrators and the Board of Directors leads me to believe that this is just another case of posting negative comments with incorrect facts. There was an election. A new board was voted in, things are moving along. "The Docs are running the joint and oh my" sounds like a negative statement. A hit and run blog.
Encouraging someone in an emergent situation to drive 45 miles down to Bakersfield is negligence on his part. Tehachapi Hospital is more than capable of stabilizing a patient and getting them down to Bakersfield with a qualified EMT. I've known of the Doctor or nurse loading up in an ambulance and going down with the patient for extra safety.
If he has a problem with the public for voting the Doctors in he may feel that to be a valid beef on his part. To criticize the hospital staff of their ability to treat emergencies is rediculous.

I've posted about the hospital before so I am not going to repeat myself entirely. But I agree with Olivia on Dr. Barrozo. Detached is an excellent word. The times I had interactions with him and it has been years, but he was an excellent Dr. Not great with the bedside manners but I would rather have someone sewing me up and doing such a good job that you wouldn't even know the severity of the wound a year later, than have someone whisper sweet nothings in my ear and have a horrible scar or worse. So yes, Dr. Barrozo I feel is a wonderful for what is job is. If you want someone to talk nice to you and tell you want you want to hear, or flower with good tidings, go to dating service or call your friends, don't go to a ER and expecting a busy Dr. to do so. And about the rest of the staff, no complaints again on my end. And yes, there has to be priority in an ER. The best Dr in the world can stop Emergencies from coming in. With any ER it is hit and miss on the waiting aspect. Use common sense people or should I say the complainers.
BTW, my mom just went into a BIG hospital on Weds to get her lung drained, and it didn't get done until Saturday. Now there has been complications and it wasn't her actual lung but the sack around her lung, but point being the hospital isn't a small town, one floor hospital. So again, for what the Teh hospital has to work with and don't mean personnel, I think they are doing pretty well.

Feb 20, 2008 at 01:02 PM : Really? If...

Really? If you disagree with the blogger, they must be wrong? Honestly - that logic just doesn't fit - but go with it if you must. It is just your life or the life of a loved one. Everyone who wants to visit Olivia and her friends in the emergency room, go for it. I'm just saying - be careful about how and why you make life threatening decisions. If you want to say that is a negative take on reality, I guess I'll have to agree.
Yes, the hospital use to be run by administrators and I think the new hospital would have been built by now had they not been voted out and doctors voted onto the board. Waiting, waiting, waiting for that new hospital and the price to build is growing, growing, growing. That is now 12 years to my knowledge that the doctors have been talking about that new hospital. For publicity, they are running updates in the Tehachapi News. But, in reality, no progress has been made and now they are asking for donations. I read recently that a new study is being paid for. That would be in addition to the two studies (that I can remember) that been been already been received.
I think the doctors have an agenda and that is to keep big HMOs out of Tehachapi because if they came here, the current doctors would have to work full time (plus). Like most doctors on the planet. And they don't want that.
So who exactly are the ER doctors that are available to those of us seeking treatment? In Tehachapi, they are doctors that don't have a large number of private patients and are therefore, available. And, why would a doctor practicing in Tehachapi for many, many years not have lots of private patients? I'll take my guess - and you can take yours.
As for facts: 1) they have misdiagnosed both myself and a very good friend. For my good friend, he nearly died. Fortunately, when he returned to the LA area, he saw his regular physician, was hospitalized and proper care for the correct ailment (heart failure) was treated. Tehachapi Hospital sent him home with a diagnosis of an irritable stomach. 2) for myself, I just continued to be sick. Saw my own doctor a couple days later, correctly diagnosed (asthma) and now feeling fine. Tehachapi Hospital told me I had a cold. I knew they were wrong because I know exactly what a cold feels like.
This is my third example: 3) someone is driving around Tehachapi with a sign painted in their back window that says, "My wife is dead because of a misdiagnosis from Tehachapi Hospital and I miss her very much." So - I am far from the only example of negligent care received at the Tehachapi Hospital. In one instance, someone died, in the other, someone almost died and in the third (me) I just continued to be very sick and could have died. That's pretty scary by my standards.
For those requiring good news, here is my contribution to your illusion: everyone at Tehachapi Hospital that nearly killed my friend, misdiagnosed me and did kill some guy's wife - were very nice and polite.

Washburn, according to your facts, every hospital is negligent. So why send someone down the hill for Emergency care? People die from misdiagnosis every single day it's an unfortunate fact. Why do you choose to badmouth Tehachapi Hospital for what goes on in every hospital across the country?
I think you have some of your facts wrong on the construction of the new hospital and I won't pretend to know everything there is to know about the issue. I do know that by law, they are having to do another environmental study. The plans are finally moving along.
As for the man that drives around in his car. I know the man. I know what happened and due to Privacy, I won't go into details about his loss. But I can tell you one thing for certain. It was not Tehachapi Hospital that killed his wife.
I'm sorry for your losses. I hope you are doing well with your asthma.

Though I've never had to use the ER for emergency service, I was sent there by my md for tests one day, I was in pain, but not life threatening. I waited maybe 15 minutes before being taken back, the test was done, I was on my way. Small, yes. Clean, very. The lady who took care of my paperwork was attentive, polite and knew what she was doing.
As far as 'administrators' running the joint - would you put a banker in charge of a construction job? A contractor in charge of a school? I want doctors running the joint!
And some doctors prefer the ER over private practice, that's all. I know I would.
Negligent? How about the doctor in a big city hospital - one of the Seventh Day Adventist facilities -who diagnosed my daughter's pneumonia as WORMS? That's one bill that never got paid! His name was Dr. Rose and he was a blooming idiot!

Feb 20, 2008 at 03:02 PM : Olivia - I agree with...

Olivia - I agree with you that TH has an excellent front office staff. They are always polite and try to keep everyone updated about the wait, etc. I would definitely not want their job, to have to be yelled at & take the blame for things that are beyond their control. I also agree with you about Dr. Barrozo. Having worked with him for many years, I know that he is a very nice man who I would choose to be my emergency doctor because I know that he will do a complete job. Olivia, can you send me a message? I have something to tell you but can't click on your name anymore.
There are excellent nurses, doctors, and other staff at TH. They are caring, patient, knowledgable, and polite. There are also several doctors, nurses, and other staff that are rude, and act as though you are bothering them by making them do their job. I am sure that anyone who has been to TH has dealt with both. I can say that I personally have seen both. In my person life I have always received excellent care for myself & my family members with exception of one time. Of course, I was an employee of the hospital at the time and know that knowing the staff can make a difference. However, in my experience working there I have also seen some horrible things happen to patients & their families. Unfortunately, it is all the luck of the draw. If you are lucky enough to have your emergency on a day that good staff are working then you will receive excellent care. If you go on another day, you will be treated by staff as though they just want to get rid of you. This isn't something that is unique to TH, you will encounter it no matter what hospital you go to.
At TH you will find doctors who provide excellent care but because of their culture don't have good bedside manner, doctors who want to bring in as much money as possible so they will admit you for anything, doctors who don't need the patients input or tests because they are all-knowing & know there is nothing wrong with you, doctors who are rude to staff & patients, and doctors who are wonderful in their care & personality.

Not till hell freezes over, That is what a good friend and long time Tehachapi resident has told me many times on him ever going to our local hospital. His words were "" I do not care if I am having a major heart attack I'll never go to tehachapi hospital I will go to Bakersfield first'''''. Well my friend had chest pains the other day and well, It must of got a little cold under his feet because he made the wise decision and went to tehachapi hospital. You can bet when I went to see him in the hospital up here I could not help but give him a hard time. Luckily for my friend it was not too serious and he was released the next day. My friend had good things to say and did not regret his decision to be seen at our hospital.
What I would like to know has anyone else had any experiences like my buddy did if so I would like to read about it.

Feb 21, 2008 at 03:02 PM : I have been to TH and...

I have been to TH and I have had both good and bad experiences there so it could go either way for me. I have heard some not so great stories about TH, but I've also heard some not so great stories about other hospitals to. I guess my point is all hospitals have their moments and it's normally a problem with a staff member and not the hospital itself.

Feb 21, 2008 at 07:02 PM : lol, good to hear from...

lol, good to hear from you Jewels, yeah I can be a pain in the rear. I've also seen my share of grumpy staff. As I stated before....if anyone is mistreated, or disrespected, I don't care what kind of day someone has had, you should not hesitate to get their name and report it. Customer Service means a lot to me and my pet peeve is people with a little bit of knowledge treating customers or co workers like they don't have feelings. Hopefully it doesn't happen often. I wish it didn't happen at all.
