I'm very sorry for taking up so much space on the blogs the past couple days with all the lost/found pet reports. We've been inundated with them since the 4th of July -- unfortunately something that happens every year when they are frightened by the holiday chaos and many people are on vacation. Hopefully this will start to taper off soon. Thanks for bearing with me while we try to reunite these pets with their owners. Susie

I agree with the other two comments Susie. You have been instrumental in getting many dogs and owners reunited. I believe the network for Lost and Found animals that we have going is doing some good. I know I feel real good when we have a success story.

Just a reminder to all who have companion animals. Please have some form of I.D. on your pets. Even if they are more indoor than outdoor pets, there's always the chance of them getting out and then becoming confused and not being able to get back home. I would be so much easier for those finding these animals to reunite them.

If you have lost or found an animal, please call Susie at Canine Creek at 822-0307 or the Tehachapi Humane Society at 823-0699 menu #7.

Awwwww, group hug! :-)

Seriously, thanks everyone. I really appreciate that. Some days I feel like I'm interruping the flow of conversation with my posts, but I just butt in anyway. The great thing is, the blogs have made a big difference in the number of animals the rescue community is getting back to their homes... BEFORE they hit the shelter, where they may not make it out alive. I have talked to the Tehachapi News about setting up a separate area for the lost/found pet blogs so they are easier to find, rather than being buried among the conversation threads. I believe they are working on it.

Anywho... thanks again for supporting this effort. Pet rescue is a community-driven grass roots effort in Tehachapi. Unfortunately, a lack of county-run facilities has made it a necessity.

Think about...

Think about this idea in the mean time while you wait on help from TN. You could just have one single blog and post and delete segments as necessary within the blog. Just be sure to start your description with “FOUND DOG,” etc. so it will be noticed in the new blog comments column.

As for having a separate section for these important announcements, I’d be concerned somewhat. The bloggers here have developed a pattern and expectation to see it here. Does that make sense? What do others think?

Keep up the good work.

Jul 9, 2008 at 03:07 PM : I'm not sure what...

I'm not sure what the TN has in mind, but I'm hoping they will put the lost/found pets on the home page. I have offered to pay a sponsorship fee to do that, but I'm waiting to hear if their webmaster can make it happen. Before they moved the blogs to a separate index page, each post would get an average of 15 to 25 hits. Now I'm lucky to get 5 to 10 on them. Nonetheless, it's still been a very effective tool in reuniting pets with their families.

By the way, I keep a running log of all lost/found pets within the last year (with photos, when provided) on our website, and I remove the listings when pets are returned to their homes. It has its own page, so you might want to bookmark it for easy reference. As far as I know, it is the most complete and up-to-date online list for our area because we receive reports from the Mojave animal shelter, the Tehachapi Vet Hospital, STOP, the Tehachapi Humane Society, the Bear Valley Police Dept, and other local rescues and foster families. http://www.caninecreek.com/lost_&_found.htm. If anyone needs a pet posted, all they have to do is email me at info@caninecreek.com. You can call the store too, but emailing me directly is usually more efficient since I'm online most of my waking hours.

One last note... found pets should be scanned for a microchip before being taken down to the Mojave animal shelter. We have one at our store, and the Tehachapi Vet Hospital does too. About a month ago a stolen dog was reunited with his Palmdale owners thanks to a microchip -- over a YEAR after he disappeared from their yard!
