Parking lots and bike paths

So I made a decision not to really voice my opinion about the people running for city council as I no longer live in the city limits and I can't vote, but I'm still interested in the things going on in the city. I decided I wanted to visit Mr. Tripp's website and see what he had to say. I have to admit that most of his web page was filled of the same ol' same ol' BUT there was one section that caught my eye and interested me. Mr. Tripp was talking about the new parking lot down town and how there was a $100,000 difference in the bids put in for it.( the city obviously went for the lower bid) His question was what made up that $100,000 difference or what didn't we get with that $100,000 savings. He showed pics of the new parking lot where someone had already hit the tile on the top of the "curbed" area and had ripped it off leaving it broken in many places. He also made mention(and showed pictures) of the light bark used in the planters. How long will it last?

He then had some excellent points IMO about our new bike paths. Don't get me wrong I think this was a great idea, but he had concerns about the way they were done. The asphalt was laid out over packed dirt.....nothing else. What happens to those pathways once we get a good rain or some snow? How long will they last? I think these are excellent points and questions. Also, something not mentioned on his site but noticed by me is the placement of those fences. I find it odd that they are placed on the outside and not on the inside near the road. I can understand this to a point as some have steep slopes on the other side, but at the same time by placing them on the outer sides bicyclists have nothing between them and the cars passing by but a small curb! I can't tell you how many times I've seen people on Red Apple swerve around people turning on Reeves because they are coming up on them to fast and didn't notice they were turning or they are just to impatient to wait for them to turn. Accidents waiting to happen!

Anyway the question is why does it seem like the city has a hard time doing things right the first time? Why does it seem that things aren't really thought out? Also, do you feel we should go with the cheaper route or spend a bit more and do it right the first time?

HOW DO YOU FEEL? OPINIONS WANTED! :)

Where am I?

So normally I don't look to closely at the police logs, but I did this time due to a blog posted here. Talk about disturbing! Assaults on people with knives, shovels, and a CAR, rape, and people being jumped and robbed in bathrooms! Where am I living? Has it always been like this and I just didn't notice or are things just getting down right dangerous out there? This certainly doesn't sound like the Tehachapi I grew up in, and it makes me worry about our town and my kids future. What are your opinions on this?

Never Forget!

As many of you know today is 9/11. I wanted to acknowledge those who lost their lives on 9/11 seven years ago. We Will Never Forget! UNITED WE STAND!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6jbjoenj-w

* I picked this one because it has my favorite 9/11 tribute song by a band not very well known. It's probably not a genre many listen to, but I wanted to share it with you all!

Midwife question??

I was wondering if anyone knew of any midwives here or in Bakersfield that do/will deliver at a hospital. I'm looking to switch doctors and this was what I had with my first two(up north) and I haven't been happy with any of my OBGYN's since. Any info would be great! Thanks!

Programs/classes for young kids in Tehachapi

Hey y'all I was wondering if you guys could help me. I'm looking to involve my 5 year old (6 by the end of the year) son in some sort of weekly class or program. The only thing I can think of is karate and I'm not sure if I want to do that. I've had a few people with younger children tell me that they've pulled their young kids from karate. So..........anyone have any ideas?

As if things weren't bad enough.........

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/story/46061.html

These people just got royally screwed! What happens now when these people can't make their house payments or their credit card payments? How fair is it that some of these people(through no fault of their own) will screw up their credit now? This has the opportunity to ruin peoples lives. So wrong IMO! I really hope credit card companies, banks, etc. will be sympathetic to these people. Who are we kidding though.......really.

House Burn Photos

So I'm really bummed that the paper only had one photo of the house burn on the front page this week. I didn't see anything online so I thought I'd post what I had for anyone who wanted to see. :) WARNING- The pics are really bad. I was using a crappy throw away camera. So I apologize in advance for the graininess of the pics.

I grew up watching some of my very talented cousins preform ballet (one actually went on to dance for the San Fransisco Dance Company.) Needless to say I've seen some great performances, BUT this has to to be one of the most amazing things I have ever seen! The video is long(about 7 min)and it takes a minute to get to the good part, but it is well worth it IMO.

FYI 7-24-08

If you're working, eating, playing, or just staying home near town tomorrow...you're probably going to see a lot of smoke. This is a scheduled burn and there is no need to be alarmed. I didn't see a notice of this anywhere so I figured I'd just post a little something here so you'd all have a heads up!
