Drug Test for Welfare Checks - - jewels's Blog - Tehachapi News

Did you read that post it is not a blog, but i thought it would be a good discussion. The article was about a guy who as an American tax payer and a citizen who has a job that requires random drug testing...shouldnt the government or county agencies drug test the welfare recipients who are receiving money from welfare benefits? I SAY YES!!!!!!!
That is the best idea i think i have ever heard for welfare reform. Believe me when i say that there are ALOT of people who DO NOT abuse the welfare system and use the monies they receive as they should. But there are so many more that DO abuse the system and cant wait to get that money so they can invest in another "sack". I also think that the rent and utility payments should automatically deducted from thier monthly welfare allowance. What do you think?

Yes, I agree with your thoughts of drug testing for welfare reciepents. It is a problem everywhere but some people do spend their welfare on things that are not in the best interest of their kids. I know of one person who used his welfare to buy illegal drugs instead of taking care of the kids which ment that the kids were eventually without a home to live in. Not only did it cause the family to loose their home but he could not get a job becasue he wouldn't get out of bed to go look for work. If they were drug tested then maybe it would provided a better situation for the kids. Also, if their rent and utilities were pay automatically from their welfare check then the kids would have had a safe place to live.

Merely having the welfare automatically deduct their rent and pay the landlord directly does not solve much of this problem. In L.A. County, this is called "Section Eight" housing and since the landlords get their check every month, many of them (not ALL, of course) could care less what goes on in their rental unit. Many of these welfare recipients sell their Food Stamps for cash at 10 cents on the dollar and use the money to buy booze and/or drugs. I have seen generations learn how to use, or more aptly "abuse" the system in this manner. I think drug testing should be mandatory but then, there are those bleeding hearts who will consider this an "invasion of privacy" and the ACLU will have another ass to kick!

I think there are alot of things wrong with our welfare system and some of the people that are on it abuse it. I have known several people who have been on it and each one of them have abused it in someway or the other. Not every person abuses it but there are alot that do.

I have a friend who has been married for about 4 years and they have 2 children. They were getting about $800 a month in food stamps and they wasted every dime of it on microwave foods such as t.v. dinners. They didnt buy meat, vegetables, fruits, or things that actually made a real meal. It makes me upset because i dont feel that those things should be allowed on food stamps. They should only allow things that are nutrious. My friends spouse worked off and on he had 21 jobs in one year and she refuses to work.

And if they tested people for drugs and kicked them off if they tested positive that would eliminate a good percent and maybe the money they were using for them could go to the ones who really need it.

jimr...

Section 8 is totally separate then rent being deducted from a welfare check. Section 8 pays a percentage of the rent directly to the owner or manager of the rented property. The person receiving section 8 is still responsible for paying his/her percentage of the rent out of his/her own money.

Eekitsaspider...

even if they are buying microwave foods...at least they were buying food. Some people trade the use of thier food stamp debit card to the connection (drug dealer) and trade drugs for the food that is supposed to be going to their children. That is the sad fact. People spending the food stamp money on microwave foods is minor compared to some of the crimes being commited

Drug testing? Are we also willing to pay the high cost of a then needed mandatory stay at a rehabilitation center for the people who do not pass the drug test? Otherwise what good will it do? We will not force Americans to be homeless if they fail the drug test if that is what you think. Plus, most drug addicts have children. Are we going to cut them off welfare if they test positive and put them and their kids on the street? NO. Only 2% of our federal budget goes to welfare services anyway. It's not like much of the taxes we pay go to welfare to begin with, most goes to Defense, Social Security and Medicare. Although, I suppose I could pay an increase of 0.3% of my earnings for the additional drug testing if it would indeed help the situation. Although, I don't think it would be fair to those welfare recipients that are not on drugs and are women who have been dumped by the father of their children and are trying to simply raise their children with some dignity.. 3/4 of the people on welfare are indeed single women with children.

Anyway, It will never happen because it will be too costly and it will do absolutely no good because of the simple fact that America will not put Americans out on the street. Drug addicts are nothing to be jealous of. Their life sucks. I wouldn't want to be one would you???? If I had to be on welfare I would do drugs too, it isn't a dignified way to live.

Sparks

How about this....if they test positive for drugs, they can use thier medi-cal to enter a manditory outpatient treatment program. Also if they test positive the county can mandate them to have their rent and utilities deducted directly from their welfare benefits in order for their children to have a place to live, instead of just giving them $ to spend on drugs. I was a woman who was dumped by the father of my children who was also a drug addict. Did i spend my welfare check on drugs and not on rent and bills??? YES. You are correct it is no life to have. But we have choices and obligations to our children. If the county would have deducted my rent directly from my benefit check my kids would have had a safe place to be.

I agree jewels atleast they are buying food, even if it is microwave food. I think maybe the welfare system needs to regualate what they can and cannot buy, like WIC does. This would lead to a healthier lifestyle and decrease the chances of obesity. Children not only need a safe place to live they also need to be taught to eat healthier and the best example is the parent.

She also said that if i loaned her the $20 that she would take me to the store and use her food stamps card to buy me some groceries. Now is that wrong or what? I flat out told her NO and that i refuse to buy her cigarettes in exchange for food that the food stamps card is for her and her 2 children. I should call the local welfare office and turn her in but i doubt it would do any good. So its not just drugs it is cigarettes also..oh and alchol ( cant spell) Where does it end?

And i dont think giving your child corn dogs or burritos is a bad thing if used occassionally. Childhood obesity is on the rise in this country and somethings needs to change for example cheaper nutrious food!!!

This is kinda off the subject... but i think they should make a card to track what parents do with the money the recieve for child support... I know several women who recieve child support, but spend the money on partying, drugs and alcohol instead of the children... this leaves the kids without the things they need..... they make sure you spend food stamp money on food.. so why not make sure the child support is spent on the kids....

Dec 21, 2006 at 07:12 AM : Jewels I have no idea...

Jewels I have no idea what goes through her head sometimes, She thinks the world owes her and she doesnt care how she uses the money she gets... She is also a perscription addict, she takes more pills in a day than i have taken in my entire lifetime. So her mind is elsewhere and not thinking ( to say the least). I honestly do not know why i stay friends with her or even talk to her anymore. I guess it is because i hope someday she will be back mentally. Welfare also has to look at legal drug use as well as illegal drug use. I have another friend who just got off all of her pills she had a pill for everything under the sun and it was all paid for by medi-cal. And none of it she needed except one. But she felt she needed it and she felt she couldnt live without it. So there is another side of drug use and it is perscription addicts.

Also i have been taught to be a "bargain" shopper.. My mom had 9 mouths to feed ( 7 kids and 2 adults) and she made things that would make 2 meals. And vegetables are easy to add to a kids menu.. I make special Jell-o for my son and it is loaded with vegetables and he doesnt know it. As a parent i try to set good examples for my children and provide them with nutrious food and occassionally we have junk food just as a treat..

And i agree with lotsoluv we should track how some people spend their child support money . I havent gotten a dime from my sons father in 15 years and would of loved to have it to spend on his needs. Deadbeat parents is another touchy subject, i wish we could post their pictures on the internet and in papers, kinda like a beware sign!! lol

Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and A Happy New year!!!!

My x went and had 3 more children on top of mine. Him and his girlfriend lived on welfare the entire time neither one of them worked. And their favorite pasttime was drugs and beating up eachother and visiting jails. My son did get to meet his 1/2 brother and sisters a few times through his biological fathers parents ( they ended up cutting him out of their lives i think it is because my son is not normal and they cant handle that).

But deadbeat dads/moms should have some exposure and should face more serious consequences ( cant spell) than what they currently do. any man/woman can make a baby but it takes a "REAL" man/woman to take care of the child. I also feel that the district attorney's need to more efficient in finding these deadbeat parents. When my x left my son at 9 months old i went to the d.a. and gave a complete address, phone number and where his parents lived and all other info and the d.a. could never find him, so i never got a dime and i havent gotten a dime in 15 years. And honestly if i did get child support he would want to see my son and there is no way on God's green earth i would allow that.... and that is because of his track record with drugs and being abusive.
