This Week In Bakersfield Theatre - weekend of October 21st, 2007

Last chance to see Shakespeare this weekend so grab a blanket and go enjoy one of the most prolific playwrights of all time at Bakersfield College's SPACIOUS outdoor theater. It really is one of the coolest theatrical experiences in Kern County. On The Tip Of My Tongue/Haunted House is also closing at BCT, so don't miss local teens & kids in this funny & scary double feature.

Three more mainstage shows round out this weekend's events. Don't miss Zorro, Onionheads, and Sweet Charity, which are playing for a few more weeks.

I have been informed that Project Ghost has been delayed, so it will now be playing October 26 through November 3, late night at the Empty Space.

The art show, Burn The Witch II, will be holding an open house on Saturday with musical performances and what not. $5 gets you in the door if you can afford it, otherwise a smile will do.

For those of you who saw our first season's production of Zorro: The Rest Of The Untold Story, you know to expect something outrageously fun. Watch as Zorro and his fast talking Jersey mother defend the people of Old New Mexico against the villainous Buck Badum and his cohorts, Sheriff Toady and Conchita. Will the lovely Miss Alice Sweepup be freed from Buck’s grasp? Will Don Perico and his wife Senora De La Guitar get their cottage back? Will the young orphan, Lucinda, finally get to eat something? All of these questions will be answered in what is sure to be another Melodrama classic that will have you rolling in the aisles.

This soulful play takes a raw, poetic look at the plight of onion farmers on the edge in the 1935 Oklahoma Dust Bowl. The Tidwell brothers and the Bumpinmeyer sisters explore young love, hard times and loss of family as the sky turns black and the onions die. When the sisters leave for Califor nee, a shocking truth hits the Tidwell farm and the boys are left with the relentless dust. Devastated, they follow the girls to the "land of milk an' honey" where, months later in a migrant camp in the grip of the Great Depression, they find the sisters buried in poverty and prostitution. The black secret of the Bumpinmeyer family is discovered. Skins are peeled in layers to reveal the sweet and the sour. Tragically, the dirt on these onion pickers never comes clean; the "land of plenty" grows nothing but the cries of dead hearts and broken Okies. Meanwhile, the devil sits in his shack, laughing. Winner of the 1999 American College Theatre Festival.

Two boys, harassed by summer chores, decide to run away from home. They stop to rest at a clearing in the woods, and are awakened by hand puppet characters. The puppets issue mysterious warnings of trouble. Easily recognizable villains, heroes and heroines from children's literature, who mistake them for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, surround the boys. Unable to escape, they undergo a farcical trial in which they fail to prove they aren't Tom and Huck. Longing for home, they accept their fates. They are saved in a challenge, which proves their true identities. And, they are discovered to be the heroes of a brand new story being written at this very moment! Also featured will be Haunted Houses by Kathryn Schultz Miller (youth theatre) On a summer night four friends enter the abandoned, dark mansion that overlooks their town. Once inside, their imaginations and their fears guide them to the phantoms of their minds. As they tell their personal stories of rejection, hazing, isolation and threats of abuse, they touch on terrifying phantoms. In sharing their stories and finding courage for each other, each bravely grasps important clues for living better and helping each other.

Charity Valentine is the eternal optimist. While working at the seedy Fan-Dango ballroom, she is often taken advantage of and continually experiences bad relationships. Finally, she seems to have met a decent fellow in Oscar. Trying to hide her true profession, she lies to him and tells him that she works at the bank. Soon, Oscar discovers Charity's real profession and things head south. Nevertheless, Charity continues to remain hopeful that good things will happen in her life.

Summary:

Hurry Up, Santa! returns for its fifth fun-filled year! When Santa Claus accidentally oversleeps, his plucky elves scramble to save Christmas! This year’s production features the all-new Jack Frost Holiday Family TV Variety Show, a wacky send-up of classic television Christmas specials.

Burn The Witch II - Opens October 13th

Burn The Witch returns to The Empty Space Theatre and Gallery in Bakersfield! Presented by Jen Raven, this year's amazing all-women group art show will feature the works of over thirty talented local artists, and will be on display the entire month of October (available for viewing during the openings scheduled, thirty minutes prior to regularly scheduled show times, and also by appointment).

The artwork will be available for preview the weekend of October 5th and 6^th. The Opening will be October 13th from 3 to 7 pm, with a suggested donation of $5. There will be food, drinks, live music, and performance poetry. There will also be an Open House, October 20th, from 5 to 7 pm. Again, there is a suggested donation of $5, and there will be food and live performances as well. Proceeds to benefit The Empty Space, a 100% non-profit organization.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As this is a woman's issue and one close to our hearts, the artists of this year's Burn The Witch will be working to increase awareness through this year's show and artwork.

This Week In Bakersfield Theatre - weekend of September 2nd, 2007

September at last! Fall is on the way and hopefully some cooler weather as well. This first weekend of September is sparse - just two local shows playing - but they are both terrific. Also, A Song For Vanya (an original musical taken from Bakersfield to LA) is opening. We've got several auditions on the calendar and a whole slew of productions opening next weekend, so stay tuned.

That one pair of plaid golfers pants you hide from your spouse. Well now you have somewhere to go - blow the dust off and get out the iron - because plaid is back and Stars wants to see what you've got!!!!

One of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory, this deliciously goofy revue centers on four young, eager male singers killed in a car crash in the 1964 on the way to their first big concert, and now miraculously revived for the posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that never was.

Singing in the closest of harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with over-zealous precision, the “Plaids” are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they're not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the '50s.

This theatrical morsel succeeds on the basis of clever musical arrangements, a young ensemble cast with strong rapport, and a solid understanding of the “Plaid” style that have made four naïve kids into an international sensation!

Forever Plaid originally opened in New York City on May 20 1990 and ran for 1664 performances.

AUDITIONS FOR FOOTLOOSE THE MUSICAL at the Spotlight Theatre

The audition dates will be Sept. 11th, 12th, and 13th from 5:00p - 8:00p.

It is an open call audition.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be singing and cold reads.

The songs you prepare should be contemporary rock-like songs.

Thursday the 13th will be a mandatory Dance audition for anyone that wants to be a featured dancer.

Gaslight Melodrama Holiday Show & Company Members

The Gaslight Melodrama Theatre & Music Hall is pleased to announce it will be holding auditions for it’s “Holiday Extravaganza” show as well as to hire Full-Time Company Members. The “Holiday Extravaganza” will run from Nov. 30^th to Dec. 23^rd. There will be performances 8 times per week with shows Tuesdays thru Fridays at 7:00pm and Sat. and Sun. at 1:00pm and 7:00pm.

Rehearsals for the “Holiday Extravaganza” will start on Oct. 14^th and will be held Sundays from 5:00pm-8:00pm, Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays from 6:00pm-9:30pm.

Please have a comedic monologue prepared and a song of your choice to sing. Actors will also be required to do a cold reading from the “Holiday Extravaganza” show.

We hope to see all of Bakersfield’s hidden and not-so-hidden talent there.

The Story:

Oscar Wilde’s delectable wordplay is at the forefront of his utterly brilliant “trivial comedy for serious people,” The Importance of Being Earnest. Two witty young gents, John Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, both assume the name “Ernest” in order to win their loves’ hearts ... for these ladies are certain they could never be happily married to someone named anything but Ernest. The lads’ matrimonial plans may be thwarted by John’s questionable lineage and the formidable Lady Bracknell, who is the mother of his intended and Algernon’s aunt. Their dilemma leads to the cleverest hilarity in the history of theatre!

Special Season Opening Event, this BCT tradition is called "Angel Night" and its purpose is to honor supporters of the theater current and past.

"A Song For Vanya" Heads To Los Angeles

"A Song for Vanya," the original musical by local creator Robin Eschner, joined by Bret Martin and John Shillington, is heading to Los Angeles! "A Song for Vanya" debuted to sold-out crowds last April at the Spotlight Theatre and now the show is going to the Theater/Theatre, located at 5041 W. Pico Blvd in Los Angeles, for a special production. This special show opens August 31 and runs through October 6 with shows on Friday and Saturday nights at 8PM and matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2PM.

"A Song for Vanya" is based on the classic play Uncle Vanya by Antonin Chekhov. Eschner, Martin, and Shillington transform Chekhov’s melancholic story into a lyric masterpiece, highlighting the intrigue with music and taking us on a journey into the hearts of this colorful but dysfunctional family. Brought to life with stirring emotion and sweeping, epic music, "A Song for Vanya" is a landmark moment for Theatre Arts Productions and is directed by Hal Friedman.

We're saying goodbye to July in style at theaters around town with several more chances to catch family-friendly fun like Monterey Jack, The History Of Rock & Roll, & Over The River & Through The Woods.

If you're like me, your Fridays and Saturdays are precious, which is why it's nice to have Thursday performances offered...like the ones tonight for Rock & Roll + Over The River. The Spotlight Theatre even offers BIG Thursday discounts, so take advantage and check it out tonight.

Nick is a single, Italian-American guy from New Jersey. His parents retired and moved to Florida. That doesn’t mean his family isn’t still in Jersey. In fact, he sees both sets of his grandparents every Sunday for dinner. This is routine until he has to tell them that he’s been offered a dream job. The job he’s been waiting for--marketing executive--would take him away from his beloved, but annoying, grandparents. He tells them. The news doesn’t sit so well. Thus begins a series of schemes to keep Nick around. How could he betray his family’s love to move to Seattle, for a job, wonder his grandparents? Well, Frank, Aida, Nunzio and Emma do their level best, and that includes bringing to dinner the lovely--and single--Caitlin O’Hare as bait...we won’t give the ending away here.

The Spotlight School of Arts is thrilled to announce our second Summer Stock Production: After the Rain King by Steph DeFerie (who also authored past summer stock hits: Nick Tickle Fairy Tale Detective and Mother Goose: Eaten by Werewolves). Produced by special arrangement with Baker's Plays and directed by Cory Rickard and Guinevere Park-Hall Dethlefson, After the Rain King is set in the late 1930's and focuses on a group of young friends with the youngest being a girl named Glory.

Glory may be just a little kid but she's in big trouble - when she accidentally opens an old, locked book she finds in an old trunk, a mysterious stranger jumps out! He declares that “I am the Rain King, The Lord Of Tears, The Master Of Sorrows, The Commander of the Darkness in your soul! I suck the happiness from your thoughts and leave only fear and desolation. Destruction is my bread and butter, loss is my meat and drink!" Glory is the one responsible for releasing him from his prison and setting him free in the world again!

Before she can stop him, he kidnaps her friend Pete and disappears back into the book. To rescue Pete, Glory and her friends must follow and soon find themselves jumping from story to story - battling pirates in Treasure Island, helping young Arthur pull the sword from the stone in Le Morte D'arthur facing down bank robbers in Prairie Rustlers and even becoming bugs! Can they save Pete, not to mention the rest of the world, from this dangerous monster or will he cast his evil spell over us all?

This funny, chilling and imaginative play with an exciting climax is perfect for the whole family! The show runs Saturday and Sundays on July 21, 22, 28, 29, August 4 and 5 at 2 PM with the house opening at 1:30 PM. Tickets are available by calling our box office at 634-0692 and are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Children under 5 are FREE! The Spotlight is located at 1622 19th Street. Rescued kittens up for adoption

Besides drama, my other current causes/interests include health care, the environment, and animals. I won't preach at you about the political issues, but I am going to use this forum to adopt out some rescued kittens. My wife works at vet's office and these two boys were rescued a few weeks ago. They aren't related but don't tell them (they think they're brothers). Kendra brought them home and we are going to adopt them out. They are healthy, loving, and energetic. At night and in the morning we have been letting them into bed with us...which turns our California King into a jungle/playground/wrestling arena. The white one is about a week older than the black one.

I'm sure they'd be happy if you adopted them both, but they are each free to good home...together or separate. We have dubbed them Ewok (the black one has a funny little face!) and Abe (short for Abominable Snowman?) for now, but the new owner(s) can call them whatever they want.
