Olivia, that song has been out for awhile now...lol. You're hip on all the new stuff huh....just playing girl. No, I had posted this song ( I think) awhile ago and talked about (it could have been during your hiatus times). First let me state that what happened to the Dixie Chicks in my opinion was BS, but it was a different time before a lot of people were against the war. There wasn't as much public dismay about it. Plus, the Dixie Chicks are country and I think that had a lot to do with it too. When Garth Brooks first came out with The Thunder Rolls there was a bunch of crap about the video. People expect controversy with Pink and "those kind of artists". =)

I agree about the Dixie Chicks thing. I don't particularly like their music or agree with their politics, but I think they were just a victim of stupid timing. When that whole thing happened the country was still trying to deal with the fact that we actually were attacked. People were all very much afraid that it was going to happen again (and a lot of people still buy into that whole fear mongering all these years later) and the last thing anyone wanted to hear was people questioning our leaders at that point.

In my opinion the Dixie Chicks have more "cajones" than Pink will ever have just because they were willing to stand up for their beliefs even when it was extremely unpopular. ;) They certainly put their careers on the line.

Colitas.....this song has been out for awhile?? Crap...I'm old. I've never heard it. I don't know, it just kind of made me think about the way America seems to be going. I've always been a bleeding heart, especially when there are kids concerned and parents who have made bad choices are now trying to do the right thing and are struggling to make ends meet. Meanwhile Billions of dollars are going into this war. I'm sure being the President is not an easy task, I'm not even sure how much power the President actually has. Politics is not a popular subject for me. Homeless people. I see them frequently and my heart just goes out to them, I wonder who they really are inside and what life could be like for them if things were just different or more accessible to those in need.

I was standing outside the other day at work, this man with long straggely hair and 3 or 4 teeth walked passed me. He told me that cigarettes were going to kill me and that he should know because he has lung cancer. He then told me thank you because I was so beautiful. I talked to him for a little while and he walked away. Such a seemingly nice, friendly man who obviously has a hard life but also seemed like he was enjoying his day. He didn't seem to have a care in the world. Maybe he didn't. I still felt bad for him.

I don't understand why gas is so expensive, which makes groceries more expensive. My husband is about to start back to work and I absolutely dread it, because he travels to Lancanster, Bakersfield and sometimes LA for work. Gas is outrageous and I just don't see an end to any of this. Who is to blame for this?

Anyway...this was the first time I heard this song and it made me sad to think that some people don't feel anything by the words she is singing.

I think there is also some crazy expectation that "country" singers or bands are supposed to all be like Lee Greenwood or something... not to mention that the name of their band is "DIXIE Chicks". I never realized how much weight that word carried until I moved to the Deep South. There is an implication in the name, and the type of music they perform, and I think it shocked the hell out of people that the Dixie Chicks didn't conform to everyone's silly assumptions about them. I don't think it surprises too many people that Pink wrote "Dear Mister President"... I kind of like the song, even though I'm a Libertarian, and the farthest thing from Olivia's bleeding heart, as she calls it. I just think George Bush is a complete fool.

Our economy, the state of our failing school system, our pitiful health care, the environment and -- my opinion - our morality, is bought and paid for by big business. You think the "faith" of our leaders has anything to do with love and goodness and what is best for the people? Well, take your last nickle and buy a clue ---- Got my stimulus bucks today. Just enough to put gas in my car for another month. What a joke .... on me and you.

Ya know, my back hurts, my skin looks like hell, my hair continues to go gray, my hours of being able to really get out and garden grow shorter every year and I worry for the world my grand daughter will have to live in. Sorry to show my pessimistic view but today, I feel so very angry. Stimulus package - (my dad would say), "who believes this s..t?"

Pink, Dixie Chicks, George Carlin, Lenny Bruce, Jon Stewart, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, really stupid actors (I guess there are some smart actors, can't think of any right now) ---- they all have the right to express themselves through the media they are most familiar. Chicks should be quieted because they are "country?" My dad would say, "Geez., are you s..ting me?" I'm not crazy about country music, but I admired the Dixie Chicks. Someone actually said out loud, in a public forum, what most of us had been saying for months. My dad would say, "Bush is a s..t head." My dad .... not well spoken but you always knew how he felt.

If you're gonna banish Pink - then we all have to go with her. Aren't we using this media to voice our opinions? Even the dumb ones?

P.S. Her song is very moving for my sad old heart. And sorry about my dad using profanity and all.

First off i believe the Dixie Chicks are entitlted to their opinion, and their right to state it. I think it was group think at its greatest, and part of the devisive era of politics.

I also believe that dissent is necessary for democracy to function effectively. I think that because you question your Government does not mean that you hate your country, or you are not patriotic.

I think this Pink song should be required listening for Americans. IT is not a bad song. We elect leaders, should we not hold them responsible for thier policies and decisions? Should we not voice our displeasure if they seem to take the country in a direction other than what we think is the best way?

While I think the forum that the Dixie Chicks used was a matter of wrong place and wrong time I don't get that out of Pink's song. The "Chicks" was done is a foriegn country and sounded more emotional driven. Pink's song, although very emotional driven it was done in a way that appeared to be respective and questioning. I have seen clips where you can really see how Pink thinks about the President, but in this songs case she took the right course for her views to be stated. Also this song was done in a way that you really could take it and use it for many different Presidents in our past.

As for how long the song as been out, according to the time on the YouTube page it has been at least 2 years ago.

Does anyone remember how long it's been since the Dixie Chicks made that comment? How many heard their "come back" CD? I love the Dixie Chicks. I love Pink. They both put out good music. I had just never heard that song before or maybe it just never stuck to me if I had heard it. My daughter knows how I've been feeling about "things" lately. While we were driving home from work, she played it for me.

I've had a lot of tough time in my life, I was very fortunate to pull out of where I've been. There are others not so fortunate. Or maybe they just don't have the drive for it.

It was in 2003, 'Livie... I found out some interesting stuff about them while reading this article. If they went back to their Bluegrass roots I'd probably like them a whole lot more. The only type of music I really don't like (literally) is pop country... I can listen to and enjoy anything else (including classic country, which I love love love). After reading this, I might seek-out and buy one or some of the more bluegrass-y albums and see what I think.

Walking around in an assumed air of freedom used to be one of the things that distingushed American tourists aboard. Now we're supposed to elevate "The President" to the status of the country itself (exactly what is meant by the kingly phrase "The Crown") and carefully measure our speech when we're outside the country? Whadda buncha BS...

The thing that really ticked me off about the whole Dixie Chick controversy, even then, is that she never said she was ashamed of being an American, she said she was ashamed that Bush was from Texas.(because they are). Everyone and their mother jumped on this. But nobody reported, or aired, or printed is that right after the Bush/Texas comment, one the the other band members ( a Dixie Chick) said But we are behind the troops 100%. But no one bothered to print or report the whole thing. But then that would have made it harder for the ones who were spewing hatred and death threats to justify their actions. I think the saddest part about this is the fact that George & Laura Bush and Lynn & Dick Cheney will never hear this song. They live in a self imposed bubble; all their "people" make sure that they never hear about any dissent in this country. Protesters are kept well away from their travel routes. If they attend an event, the coordinators make sure there is never any contact with the "wrong" kind of people.

Remember when Bush was caught off guard by the fact that some people asked whether this was a war of choice, or necessity? He was absolutely unaware that there was a question about the need for this war! His bubble didn't allow that information to sink in.

I love Pink (Stupid Girls - love that one!), I also love the Dixie Chicks...I saw them in Vegas right after the big brouhaha - they sold every seat in the house. They were awesome. The reaction so many had after what Natalie said is to me a very embarrassing time in our history. All the hypocrites screaming about free speech (but only for themselves I guess), and then sending the Chicks death threats cuz she said what so many of us felt and still feel.

Historically, music is the most primitive form of social protest of any culture, modern or ancient. So (IMO) there really are no "bad" songs, just "bad" or difficult periods of great social unrest. But having said that, it is ironic that in spite of my own rapping skills ; )-most hard-core rap music causes bleeding from my eyes and ears.

I remember being about 4 years old when friends of my parents took us to a "peace rally." With innocent glee and pretty flowers woven into my hair, I laughed unselfconsciously as I clapped along with the rest of the flower children to shouts of "1234 what the hell are we fighting for?" Over the next couple of years, I would attend four military funerals as my mother cried silently behind a stylish black veil, looking very Jackie K-soon-to-be-O. I remember being about six and asking my mom why flags were waved with so much smiling pride and excitement at the annual 4th of July Parade. I thought they were for covering caskets. Several years later, in 1976, I smiled as I carried a flag proudly while parading in a homemade Betsy Ross costume - and had my picture taken for the local paper as proof of the younger generation's patriotism. I evern got a letter back from President Ford after I described my Bicentennial pride to him in painstaking cursive paragraphs of awkward prose. Times changed and newer, deeper meanings were planted and grew in my young consciousness, just as I had outgrown my fringed leather jacket and favorite embroidered jeans and of course, those groovy "love beads" and peace sign necklaces.

Anyhow I digress. The title of the Pink song Olivia referenced must have sparked a contact high type flash back. So I did a little digging and I discovered that in 1942, Peter Seeger first used the title "Dr. Mr. President" for a pro-war song decrying the atrocities wrought by Hitler and calling for an end to social injustices in America:
