Why do People complain about this?? - - olivia's Blog - Tehachapi News

I'm going through the articles on line and came across this genius. I'm wondering, when people move into a home near the tracks, do they give the noise a second thought any consideration when making their final decision before moving so close.
Yeah, lets all honk our horns at intersections.....great idea but WE'RE NOT TRAINS!! Quality of life issue my patooty! The quality of life in Tehachapi is....IT'S A TRAIN TOWN!! What the hell is going through peoples heads.
I am perplexed by all of the attention given to rebuilding the train depot. I've lived in Tehachapi for a few years and during this time have read several letters to your paper complaining about the noisy train horns blasting away 24 hours a day. I live over a mile from the tracks and can still hear those horns loud and clear. How all those poor souls who live within a few blocks get any sleep is a mystery to me. Are the city leaders doing anything to address this quality-of-life issue? If not, why not?
The great enthusiasm our leaders place in rebuilding a “historic” train station is nice, but perhaps their energy and money might be better spent eliminating this noise pollution from our wonderful city. If you took a poll, most residents would probably prefer less train noise over a replica train station. That location would make a great and much-need parking lot and would increase safety visibility when driving north across the tracks.
I understand the trains are following some ill-conceived Federal law mandating honking at intersections for safety purposes. Maybe we should all honk our car horns at every street intersection to keep us really safe. I suspect this was the least expensive and easiest solution for the railroad companies.
There has got to be a better answer. Bakersfield had some success in solving this problem but it was expensive. Maybe we can combine efforts and synergize with other small towns that are bombarded with this noise and force some change at the Federal level, or at the very least, get the trains to stop blowing their horns in the middle of the night.

What about those darn wild flowers? I'd much rather hear the horn, than read a very sad obituary. I heard a story about an engineer that would blow like crazy through Tehachapi, because his mother-in-law lived by the tracks. Ha, I've also heard each engineer has their own style,toot, whatever. I surely don't mind any of those, but there is that one, right around 3ish..am. I swear he starts in Keene & doesn't stop until Mohave, I wish he liked his Mom-in- law.

There's a reason why new Federal regulations limit the volume of train horns to 110 db and there's a reason why towns are provided an avenue to regulate train horns, which is all Mr. Olsen is suggesting we follow - same as Bakersfield did.

But we're dumber than Bakersfield, obviously. Trains have been putting out 140 and even 150 db - about the same as a jet engine. Is there NO limit to how obnoxious your beloved trains can get? How loud do they have to be to be heard?

And awsmom - since when does "I was here first" rule apply to anything more important than your seat at the Hitching Post? Does the first person in the neighborhood get to have his parties as loud as he wants?

Actually, awsmom was justifying obnoxious behaviour on the grounds that the obnoxious actor was on the scene first. I don't think that normally counts for much, hence my question. Its a general one, not necessarily related only to trains....

Lets move the conversation along, shall we? No need to re-run all the things we said before.

You state...

You state you’ve lived here a few years, how many I have no idea, but did you not do your homework regarding Tehachapi BEFORE you moved here? It IS a train town and has been for well over 100 years. Why did you move here if you didn’t want to hear the whistles.

You ask if the city leaders are doing anything to address this quality of life issue. For some folks here the “quality of life issue” is the new people that move here and immediately start complaining about OUR way of life, OUR town, etc. and want it changed to have it "their" way. If you didn’t want to hear train whistles, you shouldn’t have moved here. Trains and Tehachapi are synonymous.

For the last 21 years I have lived within 3 blocks of the tracks and right by a crossing. And yes, there are some engineers that seem to take delight in laying on the whistle all the way through town, but that doesn’t happen ALL the time. Prior to living in town I lived in the unspoiled Cummings Valley for 14 years, and on a quiet night, I could hear the whistles all the way out there.

I’m sure that somewhere in this train town, you can likely find some earplugs.

Jul 15,  2008 at 08:07 PM : I hesitate to chime in...

I hesitate to chime in on this because although I moved to Tehachapi in the early '80s I didn't really realize how loud the train whistles can be. I have lived and learned and have been able to cope even though onlly living one mile from all the main intersections in town. So, yes, even though Tehachapi is a train town, I didn't really appreciate how annoying the horns can be at times. But, I accept the fact the trains were here long before I.

Now, that said, it doesn't have to always remain that way. As the town grows and more people move here who do not necessarily appreciate the historic signficance of trains as much, I think it will eventually change. The only thing certain in life is change. One day those who like the whistles and despise those who don't will be in the minority, and then the democratic process will result in use of the ordinances available (to limit the horns by means of other safety measures that are allowable in certain hours, etc.). So, I am very cognizant of those who like the trains, and have lived here for a long time, and may have even come here for them and are use to them, but I am also aware of those who don't. Both sides have a point, and whomever is in the majority will prevail. I can live with either (but ......sometimes wish it were quieter in the summer when I open the windows a lot at night--please forgive me for that rare desire......).

Well it seems that we need to do away with the railroads, airlines, oh and by the way we need to also eliminate the moving 1000watt boom boxes and loud exhaust systems oh and I guess lawn mowers and weed whackers and maybe the loud mouth that lives next door and would sombody please shut those darn cats and dogs off.

Even if they made the old depot property into a parking lot, the train would still be required to blow those horns at all times when crossign the rail grade crossing. You see, there are those dumb sh__s that will try to cross when a train approaches.

As for Bakersfield, they had an ordinance in place prior to the federal regulation requiring the horm blowing and they have only recently made changes to enforce the quiet zone. If the citizens of the greater Tehachapi area, this includes Stallion Springs, Bear Valley, Alpine Forest and Moun tain Meadows want to pay to eithr raide the road or lower the railroad lines, then we could do away with the horns.

I live 1 block from the depot location and yes the horn can be annoying at times, but I do sleep through them at night. Of course I could sleep through an atom bomb going off nest to my bed unless one of the kids coughed funny at night.

Get a life people, this town grew around the rail depot and now you wnat the railroad to keep it quiet for you.

Sandi said it right, you can hear the horns from 15 miles away. So unless you want to pay thousands of dollars in taxes to alleviate the problem shut up.

I do believe though, that if I lived closer to the tracks, it wouldn't be for long. So, why do people choose to live near the tracks and then complain about it. It's hard for me to understand or sympathize with that.

It's interesting the more I think of it. I'm so used to hearing the trains and not giving them much thought. It's when I don't here them that they get my attention, if that makes any sense. As for sleeping through them, I do a pretty darn good job of it. Dogs barking all night long or the bass of someone's stereo booming annoy me alot more than the trains.

                <itunes:summary>
</itunes:summary>

Complaining about train noise in Tehachapi is as lame as complaining about birds pooping on your car, when you love to park under that tree, for the shade! Ooohchild, if we apply your metaphor in regards to the Engineers blowing their horns in accordance to their gripes, I've narrowed, it down, Big Time. 9:00P.M.ish, that guy lays on it, like nobody's business. Now that really is a tad excessive. Not enough for me to get rid of our horns though.

                <itunes:summary>
"The railroad was here first" is a very valid argument PD. Here, let me explain. If the railroad wasn't in place when people moved here, then they would have a valid argument when the railroad was put in afterwards and proceeded to make a lot of noise. But the fact that the railroad was here first leaves no excuse for people who move here then complain about the noise. Pretty simple isn't it?

Did you go to the meet and greet tonight?
</itunes:summary>

In real life, activities are regulated as needs arise. Hunting, trapping, and the use of fireworks are three activities that were formally allowed in areas of Tehachapi that are not allowed now - and I doubt if you would defend the unqualified protectionof those activities on the grounds that they were once common as you defend these idiotic train horns.

Didn't go to the get-together tonight. I hope a good time was had by all.

PD, please, you're killing me, I can't even believe I'm responding, but I've had a long day at work and I'm punchy, so here goes.

The activities you list are regulated because they are dangerous. How can you possibly lump train horns in with hunting, trapping, and fireworks! I could be wrong, but I don't really think train horns are dangerous, unless of course your ear is inches away from one when it blows!

Dude, you are the poster child for all the devil's advocates the world over!

OK, just a little more sparring, them I'm going to bed.
