Hwy 58 closure http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/25188 http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/25188 Sarurday, April 19, at about 4:30 PM I tried to take the 58 to Bakersfield to go to a Condors game.  The west bound side of the freeway was closed so I back tracked to the Woodford-Tehachapi Rd to Keene.  We saw what appeared to be a real bad accident on the 58 w/b lanes just east of Broome Rd. Nothing was reported in any of the local media.  Anyone know what happened? Leap year http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/22320 http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/22320 I need help.  This is a leap year and I know that every 4 years we add a day to Feruary because the earth rotates around the sun  at the rate of 365 1/4 days .  But I would have sworn that in the year 2000 I heard that when leap year is in the first year of a new century there is not a day added to February as the earth's rotation is really slightly less than 365 1/4 days around the sun. Did I imagine that or does anyone else remember the same thing? Freedom of speech/religion http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/18552 http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/18552 I read and article in the Californian of a teacher in Mission Viejo who is getting sued by a student.  It seems the teacher, James Corbett a history or social studies teacher of 19 years, likes to let his students know that he thinks Christians are just plain wrong.  He was taped lecturing his students to "take off your Jesus glasses and see the truth".  The student got offended and has files a law suit on the teacher for violation of the First amendment to the Constitution.  That one says that the state cannot back a religion but neither can it be against a religion. Now put this in the context of the recent turmoil in Kern County Board of Education where a Board member wanted to put up posters quoting the national motto "In God We Trust".  There were quite a few people who thought that Board member was promoting Christianity.   Now I wonder what those folks would think of Teacher James Corbett in their School System.  A teacher does have freedom of speech but in the classroom that speech should not include personal bias. A teacher does influence the future but so does a preacher. I have had atheists for teachers and I disregarded those teachings, those classes were harder for me because I caught myself editing what the teacher was teaching.  I would like to hear the views of Liberals (you know who you are - you can't play baseball because youd would have to run to the right). Gold Star For Golden Hills El http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/17055 http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/17055 I was sitting in my car at the curb at Golden Hills El waiting for my grand daughter to get out when I noticed a young man walk behind my car.  He seemed to stand out by his appearance.  Wearing a ball cap with red flames pulled low on his head (a not uncommon sight), a black leather jacket zipped up (again not uncommon).  But put together with the temperature of 75, his age and the location I watched him.  I watched him get stopped a KCSO about 100 yards from where I was sitting. About that time I heard the PA System at the school tell the teachers it was ok to unlock their doors and resume normal scheduals.  My grand daughter got out of school about 20 minutes after the "all clear".  She had a notice from the School explaining what had occurred in the last 45 minutes. Great job Golden Hills School.  You have someone there that notices unusal things and is not afraid to take action.  The Administration is equally impressive in getting information out to parents.  Thank you for protecting our children.  Truth in Blogs and Reporting http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/16256 http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/16256 I just read most of legaleze about blogs with the Tehachapi News.  The first had to do with stating facts.  Made me think back to the article about the Stallion Springs Police Officer involved in a fatal collision with a motorcyclist at Tucker and Tehachapi.  That article had what I thought were opinions paraded as facts. The reporter wrote that the officer did not slow down for the intersection as he should have.  Yet the photo plainly showed the Police vehicle after the accident at it's place of rest within the intersection.  If he didn't slow then he must have been going awfully slow to begin with.  The story went on to say that the motorcyclist could not have possibly heard the approaching siren as his motorcycle was too loud.  The inference being that police must be aware of people riding vehicles that are louder than common sense would dictate.  The article did not state that other vehicles had observed the approaching police car and had yielded the right of way to the emercency vehicle approaching with red lights and siren on. That omission seems like selecting which truths to report.  There was one follow up article about the motorcyclist family being upset at Stallion Springs for not apologizing for the accident.  I understand that the family has retained an attorney. I think another follow up article is called for. JFK, Bush & Profiles In Courage http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/1538 http://www.tehachapinews.com/home/Blog/robertcarter/1538 I had just started Jr College when JFK was killed.  At the time I thought he was the best of the best.  Since then I have re-evaluated.  At the time I was a Democrat (not registered as I was not yet 21 - the voting age then).  I remember being told that JFK was part of the most intelligent and progressive as proved by, among other things, his having written "Profiles in Courage". During the Clinton Administration I switched registration to the Republican party.  I just felt that the Democrats had left me.  I still agreed with them on equal right.  But I felt they were wrong in the way they were trying to pay off anyone with government handouts rather than training individuals to be able to provide for themselves. Now it seems that the Democrats have gone even farther from me.  They now, and for some time have, berate George W Bush for his stance on Iraq.  They do not try to prove him wrong - they just point out that "the people" have expressed their opinion on Iraq and that any elected official should not only look at the polls they must act by the polls. I know that there were no weapons of mass destruction found.  I also know that terrorist training camps were there.  I also know that a lot of the unrest in Iraq is now caused by those same terrorists that have taken an oath to kill Americans.  It seems to me that they are our enemy and we should be willing to prevent them from bringing their fight to our land. In "Profiles in Courage" JFK honors those politicians that would be belittled by his current party.  JFK went to considerable effort to point out that men of honor and intelligence must always do what they feel to be right.  I am sure that the current Democrats think that they are right (at least I hope they think so).  But they should be proving him wrong - not just going against something so fickle as "public opinion". Democrats and the media like to point out Bush's misuse of the language (and sometimes it is funny) and claim that he is not very bright.  I believe that his grades and his IQ outshine his last opponent - but that is never mentioned. I think that if JFK were alive today, and of the same mindset, he would applaud Bush.  I just wish politicians today would argue merits not public opinion polls.  We should disagree on facts and policy based on what we perceive to be right - not just because we have to disagree with the other party.
