Hwy 58 closure - Robert Carter - robertcarter's Blog - Tehachapi News

Sarurday, April 19, at about 4:30 PM I tried to take the 58 to Bakersfield to go to a Condors game. The west bound side of the freeway was closed so I back tracked to the Woodford-Tehachapi Rd to Keene. We saw what appeared to be a real bad accident on the 58 w/b lanes just east of Broome Rd.
Nothing was reported in any of the local media. Anyone know what happened?

Thanks maggies42 - I went there - but I was not smart enough and I don't have a radio that selects frequencies. I do appreciate the info that a big rig blocked both lanes. When we came home after 10:00 PM the #2 w/b lane was still closed off and people were out there still checking things out. Seemed like a lot of effort for an overturned big rig.

Apr 20, 2008 at 09:04 PM : I was one of those...

I was one of those that were stuck in the traffic. I guess it happened a little bit before 4:00PM. I was about 1/2 to 3/4 mile away watching what I could of the wreck and the idiots who thought it was a good time to let their kids stretch their legs. After about an hour and half after the wreck they started to let traffic go up on the shoulder for about 15 minutes until a Cal Trans skip loader got there. They used the loader to move the trailer a little more out of the way and then move some of the corn that spilled out of the trailer out of the way. This made it possible for the rest of the traffic to drive around the wreck without leaving the asphalt. As we got around the wreck we saw the trailer was on it's side with the top ripped open along the seams. The truck was on the other side of the road with the cab really badly destroyed. With what I understand accord to the CHP traffic web site, the driver was uninjuried.

When I was come home I noticed that they were still cleaning it up. It appeared they had the trailer on the shoulder and a tow truck was picking up the truck. The loader was still there picking up whatever was on the ground. It was about 8:30PM.

Apr 21, 2008 at 12:04 AM : I was coming back...

I was coming back from Bakerfield and came upon this accident just as the driver was crawling out of what remained of the semi. He was hauling sweet corn and crashed. The cab was pulverized into pieces, facing the wrong way and was detached by 50 ft from the rest of the truck. The trailer was leaning vertically against the rocks while the wheels/undercarriage was in the fast lane. I used to be a paramedic and have never seen quite this much damage--and yet the driver walked away. I had him sit in my car until CHP and FD arrived. No other vehicles involved, and no one hurt. Got some awsm pictures on my phone though!
