Hawk Rescue? - Life, The Universe and Everything - scottso's Blog - Tehachapi News

There is a hawk that I'm pretty sure has a broken or hurt wing and can't fly in my yard. Its been on the ground for at least a few hours already and I've never seen them on the ground more than a few minutes at a time. Does anyone know of a hawk rescue or something similar? Does anyone know how to handle hawks and want to come rescue it? It's acting pretty hungry, but I have no idea how to feed it.

I just called a birding friend of mine, Scott, & she said there's really no one around here to do the rescue. She said to take a towel & cover it's head (and/or entire body) and place it in a sturdy box or animal crate. Watch out for the talons. She said either CALM or the FACT facility in Bakersfield will take the injured animal. She said the FACT animal care unit at the University is where it would end up if CALM takes it in first.

Good luck!

Contact Cal State Bakersfield. They have or at least used to have a place called FACT on campus that would work with injuried animals. Or maybe CALM as they due the same. If you try to catch it yourself be very careful of it's feet as they can due some major damage. (Of course I suggest letting a pro catch it.)

Status update: The hawk seems to be doing ok now. He's not flying far, but he's been randomly flying between 3 close oak trees for the rest of the afternoon. I have no idea what happened to him originally but at least now he's airborn and able to fly short distances. Considering the incredible amount of rabbits that live in my yard, he should do ok for food! Thanks once more for everyone's input.

As an aside, my 10th grade biology teacher back on the East coast used to rescue and sometimes train hawks for hunting and he'd often have them in class tethered to a stand. They look REALLY big inside a classroom! I was wishing I knew how to get a hold of him today!

I found a baby hawk once in my yard...I think someone shot the mother, idiots with guns. Anyway.... I used an eyedropper to give it water and I fed it chicken and hamburger for 5 days until fish and game finally came out to get it. I didn't know if I was doing the right thing by feeding it and giving it water, but it seemed happy and was even flying a little when the fish and game guy came around. This was in AZ...not sure what you should do with it here in Tehachapi. Why not just give it food and water and let it stay in the area around you? Seems the wing is healing and it sounds old enough.

When I was near at a camp near Lake Arrowhead last year we had over 30 birds that we rescued. A heat wave hit and the baby birds would fly out of the nest, land on the hot blacktop and fall over and die in 10 min. So all the campers picked them up and brought them to the infirmary where we used a pipette and fed them a water/dry cat food gruel. We put them in a box with a perch on the front porch. All but a few flew away in a few days--some of them returned to the box at night for a few weeks. It was pretty cool.
