Regime change - Tehachapiltdownman - thmazing's Blog - Tehachapi News

.

I don't know how up-to-date the contact page is, but assuming it is correct, no one has been chosen to take the place of Carol Holmes as editor of the Tehachapi News.

Carol was great for the paper and for our entire community. She was a woman of integrity and near-infinite kindness. She raised the level of dialogue in our community to her high standards and we are all better for it. But now she has left and we have to wonder--what comes next?

The News has an obligation to represent the community and to bring to our attention the most important issues. It has to discern between whistleblowers and blowhards, breaking news and stuff-and-nonsense.

Here's what I would like to see in our next editor:
Someone with the integrity of Carol Holmes.

Someone who is more punchy than we've seen before. Tehachapi is growing and we need hard-hitting reporting.

Someone who can twist arms in the publisher's office and down in Bakersfield. The News will not long be able to hold itself to sufficiently high standards if it doesn't give the editorial department more money. It needs at least one more reporter.

Someone who is well vested in our community--preferably someone who already has a long relationship with Tehachapi.
It will be quite difficult for the News to find such a person. Most people with the talent may well view an editorship at the News as a stepping stone to bigger and "better" things. No good.

What it really comes down to, I think, is what will the News pay Carol's heir? Carol's service to this community was almost on a volunteer basis. Anyone who supposes that real talent will work for those wages again has no idea how lucky we all were to have Carol in the first place.

Carol was wonderful, but she is gone.

Let's encourage the folks in Bakersfield to invest in our community. And the best investment they can give us now is an excellent editor to carry on our city's long tradition of excellent journalism.

This is their forum, not mine. They can delete me as they see fit and still be within the constrains of First Amendment law. But I think they would be foolish to do so. I am in support of the Tehachapi News--it's a great paper, and has been for a long time. I'm proud of my many connections to the paper. But times, they are a-changin'. I just hope the people in charge are brave enough to put money where the future is.

How do you know how much $ Carol did or didn't make? It seems that you are the one focused on money. Is money the only means of attracting someone "from Tehachapi" with the skills and saint-like nature of Carol Holmes? And now that she's gone, what happened to the contingent of detractors who regularly blamed her -or- the "News" - for the community's willingness to point fingers without naming names and providing proof and fact? While you're on the subject of money, just how is the News supposed to generously pay these intrepid reporters without stepping up community support of the paper while you create a living martyr?

I know, okay. I could have had her job, I wager, but I couldn't afford to support a family on it. All I'm talking about is a competetive wage--doesn't seem so much to ask.

And the editor is payed substantially less than, for instance, the ad people. And I don't know about you, but I buy the paper for the editorial content, not the ads. The News can afford to up the cost. Someday, the News will come out more than twice a week, after all, and someone'll have to supply that content. It's really just a matter of priorities.
Sorry--that didn't make sense. What I meant was they can afford to pay the editor more. And even if they couldn't, I think they still should. Call it an "investment."

I love the News--best smalltown paper in my experience. I'ld just like to see it get even better. That's hardly a crime.
