What's your movie personality? - Mindless musings - weebles's Blog - Tehachapi News

It looks like there are a few distinct movie types out there --- the folks who do a ton of movie watching on the big screen, the ones who wait for the DVD to come out and rent or buy it then, and the ones who wait for it to come to cable, where they can watch it for free.

What type are you?

Me, I'm a big DVD lovin' creature. I like being able to pause it when the litter box calls, or when the dorky dog starts barking and I missed some important piece of dialogue. Plus, I can start the movie when I'm ready...not when the TV channel is. No one kicks the back of my chair, no one's cel phone goes off, and the popcorn tastes just like I want.

In an ideal setting I would go to the movie theater see anything I wanted. I love getting lost in the big screen and movie theater pop corn (especially the Hitching Post) is the best. I don't have to clean up any that is spilled (all though I did enough of that when I worked at the Hitching Post) and fountain drinks are much better than stuff out of a can. Unfortunately with a husband, two kids and a dog I can't get out of the house to see movies as often as I want. Therefore I have to go with my second choice, buying or renting DVDs. I like the convenience of the pause button when the baby needs changing. However, I have to keep my husband away from the fast forward button. He can make a three hour movie into 30 minutes if left to his own devices. I don't watch movies on TV if I can help it. The commercials irritate me and I hate to watch movies expecting my favorite part and then discovering that it has been cut out to fit into time alloted.

I haven't paid to see a movie at a theater in about 8 years. I work in the movie industry and I've been to a few screenings of movies that I've worked on, but I just don't like going to the theater because of the crowds and unruliness. I haven't been to the theater in Tehachapi yet, maybe I should try it.

I like dvd's too, but I do most of my movie watching on Turner Classic Movies. They have an amazing selection of older movies (I usually don't watch anything newer than the mid 1970's). They don't have any commercials, and they show everything in wide screen, and uncut. Which brings up another point that might go along well with your post Weebles, the question of wide screen or full screen. I could go on and on about the benefits of wide screen over full screen, but I'll hold off for now.

Apr 19, 2007 at 04:04 PM : Okay, on wide screen...

Okay, on wide screen vs. full screen.. I swear, I was in Blockbuster a couple of weeks ago and a lady actually said, as she was placing the wide screen edition of a movie back on the shelf, "Ugh.. wide screen. Let's get full screen so we can see the whole picture."
I nearly died!

Oh, and I am a movie theatre goer on those occasions when $20 seems fine to spend on a bit of popcorn, and I LOVE DVDs of course... Still have a boat load of VHS tapes.. rent them too when I'm too lazy to actually seek out the DVD... Movies on TV are annoying. Too many commercials.

I too love to go to the theater, but with two kids, one a baby, it just doesn't happen. Now I do miss going to the drive-in theater as a kid. Now we go to outdoor theaters sometimes, like in the park or sometimes my son's school does on the playground. But I like to watch DVD's too because of the convenience...but like to rent the ones out the machine for a buck and they are the same new releases as Blockbuster. I actually try to have a movie night on the weekend with my oldest son (7) in the living room with make-shift tents. (a sheet over chairs). I use to hate wide-screen, but now I have gotten use to it. What I hate now is that darn High Definition TV on the networks. My TV is not HD, so it cuts off the sides of the show. So now I have something new to complain about..lol.

I am the kind of person who collects DVD's, for most of the same reasons as everyone else. However, as a projectionist from 'way back (everything from 35mm changeover systems to running L.A.'s first IMAX Theater) I also love the movie going experience. Sadly, too many people have such inconsiderate viewing habits that they often make it a difficult experience to enjoy the film. It has to be REALLY BIG or at least very spiritually uplifting or very funny before I'll go out to the theater.

But, having worked in them for as long as I did, it never leaves you. So, with that in mind, I hope (when I build my home someday) to build a small theater in the basement, with seating for about 10 people, and both digital AND 35mm motion picture projection. I have two Simplex 35mm movie theater projectors, so maybe someday....

I like the big screen for the blockbuster movies when they come out Like Spider Man 3 etc. but I also enjoy renting just as much. I don't have the time to go out to the movies because I can usually find other things to do that I like better so for the most part I do rent. I was a Netflix customer and loved it but when the kids left I didn't use it as much so it wasn't worth keeping up when the kids are around it pays for itself over and over every month.

Jewels I love scary movies too the last one I saw was Saw3 I was alone and turned out all the lights sat there in the dark and comfort of my own home without any distractions. I love watching them that way and since my husband isn't a big fan of scary movies its a treat when I can have a good scare.

I only buy the ones I think are classic I just bought Narnia I just love the special effects and how the creatures seemed so life like.

I used to go to every new film release as soon as they hit the theaters, but now I hardly go anymore. It has to be a very special film before I'll leave the comfort of my own home to put up with the "distractions" that now are so frequent in theaters. It's too bad folks don't respect the theater experience like they used to.

I absolutely love widescreen - why don't people get it? We're going to hook up our new plasma TV this weekend & I'm looking forward to seeing how HD looks on it!

I cannot remember the what the last movie was that I saw in a theater. I do know that I put in to have July 13th off from work. I have to see the new Harry Potter movie when it comes out. I just don't know if I will see it up here at the Hitching Post or go to one of the bigger theaters in Bakersfield. I love the Hitching Post, and it is more reasonably priced than the theaters in Bakersfield. However, since it will likely be the only movie I will be able to see this summer I might just go all out and spend the money on one of the larger theaters.
