The way I learned it in Bio Anth 120, humans and other primates have common ancestors but the other primates took a different evolutionary path. We did not evolve from primates, we are primates. We share some traits with them such as similar type of molars (y5) and have some DNA in common. It isn't hard to imagine the extinction of evolutionary ancestors, neanderthals, or perhaps some modern primates that no longer exist because we are so good at commiting genocide. Humans recently wiped out the race of people who lived in Tasmania. The last Tasmanian aborigine died in 1876. There were an estimated 300,000 people and 94 different languages in California before European contact, now the few remaining seldom gain recognition by the government as having ever existed. If we can't acknowledge and respect others who have lived so recently, how can any agreement be reached with regard to evolution?
