Monroe High School students got a special treat when the Tehachapi High School Jazz Band, directed by Craig Waldram, visited the Alternative Education Program’s campus. The open-air concert was enthusiastically received by students and teachers alike. The program varied from a musical tribute to Charlie Parker called “Birdland” to the Jimi Hendrix acid rock classic “Purple Haze.” When the band played “Soul Man,” many students recognized the tune as a karaoke favorite of a couple of Monroe teachers.The event was more than just a musical spring morning. In the past, the town’s two high schools have had difficulty finding common ground. It has been through fine arts programs that progress is being made.At one time, THS ceramics teachers sent their students’ projects to be finished in the Monroe kiln. Years later, the Monroe G.A.T.E. class was asked to video tape a THS class discussion in life skills. But this is the first time THS...
