I grew up in the 50s and 60s when people got tears in their eyes as the flag passed by during a parade or as they recited the Pledge of  Allegiance. It seems to me that Memorial Day has just become a day off, a day to hold a barbecue rather than a day to remember those who have fought bravely in many wars.I enjoy visiting York Town, Va., where I can be reminded of the brave men who fought to bring us independence during the Revolutionary War. It amazes me that without knowing little about what the future held, they wanted to have a country where people could have precious freedoms that we enjoy today. It helps me think about the freedoms I often take for granted such as freedom to attend public meetings and ask questions; freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of worship, the right to vote, to name a few.As we gather on this Memorial Day, let’s take time to remember how blessed we are to live in America and try to be good citizens and neighbors.
