The recently formed Tehachapi Starlings volleyball club traveled to San Diego for the ninth annual Starlings National Championships during the week of June 21 to 25 and returned with red ribboned silver medallions hanging from every player. The team from tiny Tehachapi defeated nine consecutive large city opponents before finally falling to the awesome first seed Navajo team from even smaller Tuba City, Ariz.Teams from as far away as New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Dallas, Indianapolis, Nashville, Oakland, Phoenix, Kansas City, and Toledo, as well as Los Angeles and San Diego, were represented by multiple teams. Going into the tournament, none of these teams even knew which state Tehachapi represented. By the fourth day, the buzz was all about Tehachapi, with such comments as “The 90 day wonders” and “the giant killers,” and “Did you hear?
