Herman Mitchell Williams was born to Martin Henry and Mattie Rebecca  (Linsey) Williams on Sept. 1, 1913 in Dallas County, Texas. He was the ninth of 11 children, seven of which reached adulthood. Herman grew up working the family farm, first in Texas then in Oklahoma. Herman married Ruby Gore in 1935. They were together until she died in 1994. Herman and Ruby Williams had six children; one died shortly after birth. The living children Lee, Roma, Douglas, Phyllis and Sharon, gave him 13 grandchildren who in turn gave him 18 great grandchildren. Herman started his family during the Depression, taking jobs that paid a dollar a day when he could get one. He moved his family to California in 1940 and worked for Monolith Portland Cement Plant until he retired. He lived in company housing in the company town of Monolith, and raised his family there.
