Sept. 11 was a special day at Carden School of Tehachapi because of the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attack. As the flag of our country was retired by upperclassmen at the end of the school day, everyone on campus stopped wherever they were, and honored the lowering of the flag. But this is nothing unusual. It's a daily tradition at Carden.  “We teach our students the various meanings of the word respect,” said Director Betty Gubler. “They learn respect for themselves, for others, and for those in authority. What better way to respect the freedoms and liberty of our wonderful country than to honor our premier symbol, our beautiful flag?” All students, including those in kindergarten, did not need any prompting when it was time to lower the flag. The honor of retiring the flag is shared between the 7th and 8th grade classes.
