To the ancient Romans, the cross was a symbol of torture and death. But, for Christians the cross is a symbol of God's love for us. Love is not just an emotion that makes us feel good. Love is a much deeper feeling than a childish infatuation. Love that God gives us is a sacrificial commitment. Love is unselfish, compassionate and forgiving. Our Lord loves us so much that He came out of heavenly glory to live as a true human being and face all the sorrow and suffering of this world. His love led Him to allow Himself to be put on a cross and take all the punishment that we deserve for our sins. You could say Jesus loved us to death, or that He loved us all the way to heaven.  Jesus, as He was nailed to the cross, stretched out His arms and said, “I love you this much.” As a man died on a cross, his internal organs would crush his lungs.
