On June 20, the Tehachapi Gandy Dancers Square Dance Club celebrated the 86th birthday of “golden dancer” Ruthe Lee with a surprise birthday party. Ruthe has been square dancing for over 35 years and has helped many new dancers to learn the calls and join in the fun of the dance. She started dancing with the Gandy Dancers when she moved to Tehachapi three years ago. Her birthday this year was special because last November her doctor told her that she may have a major heart attack at any time. Her decision to have triple coronary artery bypass surgery at the age of 85 has allowed her to return to many of the activities she previously enjoyed. Ruthe’s 86th birthday party was an opportunity for her square dance friends to celebrate her recovery from an intensive surgery, and to also rejoice with her as she returned to full time dancing.
