The Citizens Service Unit (CSU) acts as a buffer for the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, allowing officers to remain on the streets where they are most needed. Approximately 200 volunteers serve Kern County, and the Tehachapi unit is among the top groups with the most hours of service. At an annual dinner and award ceremony held for the volunteer unit, the Kern County Sheriff’s Department acknowledged the Tehachapi volunteers for their many hours of service and dedication, with over 8,000 hours logged last year. During the award ceremony Sheriff Donny Youngblood acknowledged the volunteers for assisting the department, without whom issues would not be handled so rapidly. Some of the duties the volunteer unit perform include administrative work, such as the transport of documentation to the Mojave Substation District Attorney’s office, transport of county vehicles for servicing, and assisting the Sheriff’s Department in traffic control and patrolling....
