The Tompkins After School Program students were the recipients of a unique cultural and artistic experience on Thursday, Dec. 13. The Tehachapi Folklorico Group shared some traditional dances that preserve some of the history of various Mexican states. The brightly colored costumes and rhythmically tapping dance shoes spurred clapping and cheering from the audience. According to the Tehachapi Folkloric Group instructors, the folk dances they perform are traditionally accompanied by the music of a Mariachi Band, and are very colorful. The dances originated from the Mexican states of Michoacan, Veracruz and Jalisco.   Dances performed included La Danza de los Viejitos or The Old People Dance, from the state of Michoacon; Jarabe Michoacano, also from the state of Michoacon; Jarabe Tapatio, with uniforms representing the state of Jalisco; El Toro Mambo, a dance from the state of Sinaloa in which red bandannas are waved following the rhythm of the music to attract the...
