Councilman Ed Grimes, speaking on behalf of current Mayor Deborah Hand, gave the opening remarks during the April 30 “National Prayer Day” ceremonies conducted in front of Tehachapi City Hall. “In these troubled times it seems they are trying through the courts to take this [public prayer] away from us,” Grimes said continuing on, “It's nice to see so many God fearing people here today who believe in prayer.” Following Grimes’ remarks, local Boy Scout Troop 123 posted the National Colors. The Pledge of Allegiance was then followed by the singing of the National Anthem.
