When the parents of a local child discovered the girl was bitten by a black widow spider, they rushed the child to the Tehachapi Valley Healthcare District (TVHD) Emergency Room (ER). As stabilizing treatment was given, the ER physician and crew realized they needed to obtain black widow anti-venom. There was none available in Bakersfield, Kern Valley, etc. Antelope Valley Hospital had a single dose and would not release it, and moving the child to them would have been too risky. Finally, the anti-venom was found at Delano Regional Medical Center (DRMC) but presented a problem as to how to get it to Tehachapi most expeditiously. Kim Smith, Pharm.D., the contract pharmacist at TVHD called the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for help.  They had an officer pick the anti-venom up from DRMDC and drive to meet another officer from Mojave.
