History of the Tehachapi News

Staying on top of local happenings and news is a tradition that goes back to 1888 and The Journal, the earliest known newspaper published in Tehachapi. Being a vital part of everyday life, on again-off again newspapers in Tehachapi bravely struggled against the tide of fiscal frailties until the responsibility of keeping citizens informed became a more stable venture just before the turn of the century. Continuous weekly publication of local newspapers dates back to 1899, but The Tehachapi Tomahawk came to the forefront in 1900. That treasured publication's operation changed hands and the newspaper's name became the Tehachapi News in 1917. The Tehachapi News mast has been reaching residents of the mountain communities ever since. The News was purchased by Valley Direct, Inc. in 1998, but the newspaper's content retains the same hometown flavor and dedicated staff that have made the News the best source of local news for decades. Continuing the fine tradition of community journalism that started more then 100 years ago is the trademark of Tehachapi News Publications. The company offers two weekly publications: the Tehachapi News, a community weekly newspaper published on Wednesdays; and the Southeast Kern Extra, a weekly advertising supplement delivered to all local homes on Fridays. TNP has also published Tehachapi's Own Phonebook (TOP Book) since 1963.
