A few weeks ago, several trailers full of wooly sheep arrived at the large field located on Old Town Road, across from Mourning Cloak Ranch in Golden Hills.
While the main flock has been grazing in the fields and on the surrounding hills, several newly born babies were kept with their mothers in a makeshift nursery.
A caravan of trucks arrived on Friday and in a few minutes a number of skilled hands had a full-scale sheep sheering plant in operation.
After several hours of waiting in line, the entire flock was sheered, the wool collected, dried and compressed into wool bales.
By late afternoon the entire affair was over, the bales loaded for shipment to market and the flock resumed its grazing much lighter than before and sporting a new spring hairstyle.
The spring tradition of sheering sheep is an age-old legacy of this area’s agricultural heritage that will hopefully continue for future generations to experience.
