The Tehachapi junior varsity softball team split a pair of games this past week, losing to Shafter 2-0 and dispatching Arvin with ease, 32-3.

Against Shafter, the Lady Braves logged in more hits in the contest than their opponent but could not turn the base appearances into runs. All but one inning Tehachapi had runners in scoring position.

“We lost earlier in league to Golden Valley, but I think this one was a little tougher to swallow,” said head coach Mike Heckathorn. “It was one of those games where their mistakes didn’t cost them but our mistakes cost us.”

Chelsea Maduena was the pitcher for the Lady Braves, pitching six innings, allowing only three hits and logging in 16 strikeouts. Ashley Biscailuz went three for four at the plate, logging in a double. Chrissy Whitman was one for two with two walks.

“It was a tough game to lose. We won in every aspect of the game but the score. A couple of physical mistakes and a couple of mental mistakes cost us in the long run, but that’s the nature of the game,” added Heckathorn.

Earlier in the week, Tehachapi took advantage of the five-inning mercy rule by blasting past Arvin, 32-3.

Pitchers Chelsea Maduena and Lisa Gaeta (relief) combined to hold Arvin to four hits while connecting with five strikeouts. At the plate, Tehachapi had 20 hits, with Maduena going six for six with two singles, two doubles, 11 RBIs, six runs scored, and two home runs (one grand slam). Anita Pimentel went two for three with a triple and six RBIs, while Chrissy Whitman went three for five with five RBIs and five runs scored.

The Braves will have two games this week, a home game against Wasco on Tuesday and an away game against Taft on Thursday. Both start times are slated at 4 p.m.

“We’re still in the league race but we have our work cut out for us,” Heckathorn said. “Overall, I think this one of the best and talented groups we’ve had at the JV level so we should be fine.”
