Facing off against McFarland for the first time in South Sequoia League action, Tehachapi (5-6; 4-6 SSL) made quick work of the Cougars on the road in a decisive 9-0 match victory last Friday.
The only drama that unfolded for Tehachapi on the afternoon was whether or not they would sweep McFarland, which was decided in the final doubles match when Ryan Grisso and Brad Golackson came back from a set down to claim victory in a tiebreaker 4-6, 6-2 (10-5).
“It was a good confidence booster to get the win,” said head coach Jim True. “It has been an up and down year and a lot of the tiebreakers haven’t gone our way, so to close out the match with a sweep was great for us.”
Other doubles victories came from Kevin Cunningham and David Croy, who won 6-0, 6-1, while Taylor Buttcane and Ben Gillam double-bageled their opposition 6-0, 6-0.
In singles, David Cory led the way with two convincing set wins 6-2, 6-1, while Ryan Grisso downed his opponent 6-2, 6-0. Brad Golackson, Kevin Cunningham, Ben Gillam and Nick Timperio all won their singles matches as well.
The Tehachapi varsity tennis team is young, featuring five freshman, five sophomores, one junior and two seniors that get significant playing time.
“There is a lot of talent on the team right now, with a lot of it coming back next season,” added True. “I see a lot of potential for the players and the team in the coming years.”
Tehachapi will continue their season this week with a home match against Arvin and a Thursday away match against Shafter. Both are set to start at 3:30 p.m.
