Tehachapi animal photos from the 1920s and 1930s

0 responses 0 comments A few weeks ago I ran some old photos of Tehachapi stores that were here before the chain stores arrived. A number of readers expressed pleasure at being reminded of the sleepier days of a small mountain town.

I was given a black-and-white page this week so I decided to feature some animal photos taken in the 1920s and 1930s in Tehachapi. The difference between livestock and pets is frequently indistinct on small farms and ranches, where bottle-fed lambs or chicks hatched in the house can end up with their own names and personalities.

Country people also tend to have dogs and cats and horses for companionship as well, so area ranches and farms generally have animals both large and small.

Some of my earliest memories of boyhood in Tehachapi involve visiting local ranches with my uncle, and being delighted by a litter of heeler puppies, wandering peacocks, a bull you could pet, inquisitive kittens, ducks that nested in the flowerbeds and other animal encounters.

This is one local tradition that seems to be continuing, since many of our newer arrivals also delight in sharing their homes and homesteads with animals. I’m glad.
