Tehachapi Art Center is planning a fun business and community event this spring, which will coincide with the center’s Wild and Wooly art show. TAC’s goal is to get local businesses and residents to decorate bears in a downtown and city-wide event for all to enjoy.
Masonite bear cutouts will be available at TAC for an entry fee. Large bears, at 4 feet, will be $50 and small bears, at 2 feet, will be $25. Bears may be displayed in store windows or staked in yards. Businesses may want to sponsor a bear or a family of bears.
Participants will prime, paint and decorate their bear (or bears) and awards will be made in several categories at a ceremony at TAC on Sunday, June 4. The bears will remain the property of the participants and hopefully will stay up through the summer for visitors to enjoy.
Note: this is a city-wide event but boundaries for the downtown contest are Mill Street on the west, Snyder Street on the east, D Street to the south and Tehachapi Boulevard to the north. Other areas are welcome to participate, but this is the designated area for the official downtown contest.
Bears are available now. To be considered for prizes, you must pick up your bear by Monday, May 22, and have it completed by Friday, May 26, for judging.
Categories for prizes will include Best of Show ($100 prize), Best Tehachapi Bear ($50), Best Business Promotion Bear ($50), Best Use of Humor ($50) and People’s Choice for which a map will be given to visitors and residents to show where the bears are so they can vote.
For more information, call TAC at 822-6794, stop by the center at 106 S. Mojave Street or visit www.tehachapiartcenter.com/.
